Travis Kelce may have been one of the highest-paid tight ends in the NFL in recent seasons. But staying with the Kansas City Chiefs could require him to accept a noticeable salary reduction.
The veteran tight end has reportedly agreed to a new one-year contract worth a guaranteed $12 million, with incentives that could push the deal to $15 million. According to The Daily Mail, the agreement keeps Kelce in Kansas City for what will be his 14th NFL season.
That figure represents a significant drop from the money he was making previously. Kelce signed a two-year extension before the 2024 season worth $34.25 million, which averaged roughly $17.125 million per year. The new deal, therefore, carries the potential for about a $5 million annual decrease compared to his previous salary.
Kelce Chooses Loyalty Over Bigger Payday
The decision comes after speculation that Kelce’s representatives had explored conversations with other teams around the league. Reports suggested he could have commanded a larger contract elsewhere, particularly given his continued on-field production and enormous marketing appeal.
Despite those possibilities, the longtime star opted to remain with the Kansas City Chiefs, the franchise where he has spent his entire career and won three Super Bowls. Loyalty to the organization appears to have played a significant role in his choice, even if it meant leaving money on the table.
Kelce remains one of the NFL’s most recognizable players, and not just because of his performance on the field. His celebrity profile has grown dramatically in recent years due to his relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift, making him one of the league’s most marketable athletes. The tight end has already earned more than $111 million during his career, according to Spotrac. Financial pressure likely was not a major factor in his decision, especially given the financial success both he and Swift enjoy outside football.
Another potential factor in Kelce’s choice to stay could be the Chiefs’ efforts to improve their roster following a disappointing season. Kansas City endured a difficult 2025 campaign, finishing with a 6–11 record and missing the postseason for the first time since 2014. The franchise has already begun making aggressive moves in free agency to strengthen the lineup heading into 2026.
One of the biggest developments involves the reported addition of Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III. The running back recently entered free agency after helping the Seattle Seahawks defeat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. Those roster improvements could give Kelce confidence that Kansas City can return to championship contention. Playing alongside longtime quarterback Patrick Mahomes has already produced some of the most successful seasons of Kelce’s career. In fact, they faced some legal trouble together as well.
