Former Dallas Cowboys star turned CBS NFL analyst Tony Romo finally addressed the growing chorus of fans calling for his job after a rough wild-card playoff broadcast that ignited heated criticism online. Romo’s comments came during a Wednesday appearance on SiriusXM’s Schein on Sports, where he tried to respond to the backlash. He also revealed that he and others in the booth were sick during the game.
NFL viewers have been loudly voicing their displeasure with Romo’s recent announcing work, particularly during the Buffalo Bills vs. Jacksonville Jaguars wild-card game, where his commentary was described as confusing, awkward, and lacking the sharp insight fans once expected.
Tony Romo Tried To Explain Himself, But Fans Heard Excuses Instead
The backlash started in earnest after Romo’s performance during the playoff game drew attention online for odd moments, including unclear predictions and strange noises that distracted more than they informed. Fans flooded social media with harsh comments. One viewer wrote, “He’s so f**king annoying to listen to man. First game of the day and I gotta watch on mute.”
In his radio interview, Romo acknowledged the criticism and said he was battling an illness that may have affected his ability to perform at his best that day. He explained that he and others in the booth were sick but chose to work through it because they didn’t want to miss a playoff game.
“We had a bunch of guys sick, we were just grinding through it. You’re not going to miss a playoff game,” Romo said. “It’s too much fun.”
He added, “Anytime you’re in a position like we are. We’re on the air for three and a half hours. You’re always trying to do the best you can and everything, and there’s always going to be moments where there’s always great stuff. Then other stuff. It’s just part of being in your position,” Romo said. “You just go back to work and you do a great job. That’s the fun part about this, it’s sports, and it makes it fun. We’re just trying to do make everyone enjoy the show, learn a little bit and have a great time.”
This response did little to calm tensions. For critics, the health remark came across as a justification rather than an explanation, prompting more reactions about his preparation and consistency as a broadcaster.
The CBS Booth Pressure Is Getting Louder And The Backlash Isn’t Slowing Down
The criticism of Romo’s recent work, especially over the last few seasons, has become a louder part of NFL fan conversation. In his early years as a broadcaster beginning in 2017, Romo was widely praised for his deep insight and his ability to read plays before they happened.
But now, a lot of fans are not buying the sickness as the main reason for the rough broadcast. One comment summed it up bluntly: “He’s been terrible before he got sick.” Another asked, “What about the last 3 years?” That is the bigger issue for many viewers. They feel like the drop-off has been happening for a while, not just one bad day.
Some reactions were even harsher. One fan wrote, “So how does this explain his previous years of complete bulls**t on the air? He’s garbage.” And it is not just about one awkward moment or a few missed calls. People are saying the whole experience has gotten frustrating. Another viewer added, “Ok, but he’s doing the opposite. I’m watching these games and getting annoyed and wishing JJ or someone else was calling it for 3-3.5 hours.”
At this point, the bigger story is not just one rough broadcast. It is how quickly the conversation around Romo has shifted from small complaints to full-on frustration. If he bounces back with a strong call, the noise might fade a bit. But if the same issues keep showing up, fans are going to keep pushing for a new voice in CBS’ top booth.
