‘That's sick’: Joe Burrow's bizarre Christmas tradition takes an even stranger turn after last year's samurai swords

Most normal Joe Burrow moment right here.

NFL quarterbacks are known for showing appreciation to their offensive linemen with end-of-season gifts, but Joe Burrow has turned the tradition into something entirely his own. Rather than opting for the usual watches or jewellery, the Bengals star once again went off script this year, delivering a set of presents that few players, or people, could ever imagine receiving.

According to Sports Illustrated, Burrow invited his offensive linemen to his house on Monday and presented them with an extraordinary selection of real fossils, including dinosaur bones. The players were allowed to choose their fossils in order, with seniority and arrival time determining who got first pick. It quickly became a memorable experience, with each lineman walking away with a genuinely one-of-a-kind keepsake.

The fossil giveaway is just the latest example of Burrow’s flair for unforgettable gifts. Last season, he stunned his linemen by gifting them authentic samurai swords; a gesture that was met with equal parts disbelief and excitement inside the locker room. Together, the gifts have only added to Burrow’s reputation as a quarterback who understands just how important his offensive line is, and isn’t afraid to show it in the most unconventional ways possible.

Burrow’s love for ancient bones isn’t new

Orlando Brown Jr. picked a cave bear skull this year. He said he’s excited to put it next to the sword he got last year. Brown praised Burrow for his thoughtfulness and said the quarterback is just a special person.

Burrow’s interest in fossils became known to fans last year through the Netflix show Quarterback. In one scene, he talked about visiting the Natural History Museum with teammates to see their fossil collection behind the scenes. While Burrow spreads joy to his teammates, Cowboys fans face frustration with ownership in their own organization.

When asked about the trip, Burrow said, “When aren’t fossils on your mind? They go back millions of years. That’s sick.” Some fans online joked about fossils lasting millions of years while Burrow struggles to stay healthy on the field.

The Bengals won’t make the playoffs this year, but Burrow is back playing after a turf toe injury hurt his 2025 season. His teammates clearly appreciated the thoughtful gifts he gave. Unlike teams dealing with ongoing leadership controversies off the field, the Bengals have strong chemistry in the locker room.

By next Christmas, maybe Burrow will give his linemen a playoff run along with whatever wild gift he comes up with.
