Kid Rock’s viral performance at Turning Point USA’s self-styled All-American Halftime Show on Sunday drew a lot of ridicule online after viewers accused the rocker of poorly lip-syncing his set, with many calling it one of the most awkward musical moments of the night. According to social media reactions and viral clips circulating on social media, fans noticed that his mouth did not match the audio during portions of his performance, especially while performing his 1999 hit Bawitdaba.
Turning Point USA, which was the conservative nonprofit that organized the alternative halftime show as a direct counterprogramming event to the NFL’s official Super Bowl LX halftime performance by Bad Bunny, scheduled the broadcast to rival the pop star’s slot at Levi’s Stadium on Super Bowl Sunday. The group’s alleged intent was to offer an alternative for viewers who had criticized Bad Bunny’s inclusion. The Super Bowl also faced a lot of criticism for alleged ICE involvement.
The show included performances by Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice, and Gabby Barrett in addition to Kid Rock. Despite attracting millions of livestream viewers on YouTube, critics argued that Kid Rock’s performance undermined the event’s credibility, with social media users mocking what they perceived as flat-footed lip syncing and a lack of live vocals. Super Bowl tickets themselves caused a lot of drama.
Kid Rock Couldn’t Rock All Super Bowl Viewers
Shortly after portions of the performance were shared online, fans took to X to voice sharp criticism of Kid Rock’s delivery. As per a report by The Daily Mail, one person wrote, “That was the worst lip sync I’ve ever seen. Wow that was sad,” while others questioned why he would rely on prerecorded vocals in such a high-profile moment.
Other users talked about obvious mismatches between his mouth movements and the audio, saying he looked like he was “miming” rather than singing. Some compared the performance to past pop culture lip-sync disasters, including the notorious Ashlee Simpson Saturday Night Live incident and the Milli Vanilli scandal, showing how badly the performance came across to many viewers, as per Meaww news.
The All-American Halftime Show was designed to be a cultural statement. Turning Point USA’s broadcast was initially set to stream on X, but a licensing snag forced organizers to reroute viewers to YouTube just before kickoff. That hiccup did little to dampen interest in the event; at its peak, the alternate halftime show drew an estimated five million concurrent viewers on YouTube.
In the lead-up to the event, Kid Rock framed it as a David-and-Goliath moment, acknowledging that competing with “the pro football machine and a global pop superstar” would be challenging. Despite those comments, the production values and pacing did not quite match that ambition, it seems, according to some viewers.
Footage of the performance showed Kid Rock energetically rushing the stage, ripping off his black hat, but with none of the vocal authenticity fans expect from a live show, went viral. Even as flames shot up in the background and a large American flag glowed behind him, critics said the performance could not disguise what looked like a pre-recorded track.
