Speed specialist leaves behind remarkable championship legacy

Gore was known as a dynamic baserunner and pinch-running specialist during his eight years in the major leagues. He won three World Series rings with three different teams. He helped the Kansas City Royals end their 30-year title drought in 2015, then won rings with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020 and the Atlanta Braves in 2021.

The Georgia native was selected by the Royals in the 20th round of the 2011 MLB Draft out of Gulf Coast State College. Like many athletes who speak candidly about their career decisions, Gore’s journey took him through multiple organizations before finding championship success. He spent seven years with the Royals organization before playing for the Chicago Cubs, Dodgers, Braves, and finally the Mets in 2022.

In 112 regular season MLB games, Gore finished with a .216 batting average and 43 stolen bases. He was caught stealing only nine times, showing his efficiency on the basepaths. In the playoffs, he was even better, recording a 5-for-6 record in postseason stolen base attempts.

After retiring, Gore stayed involved in baseball in Florida. He worked as a speed and baseball trainer and coached his son’s baseball team. His dedication to the sport remained strong, unlike athletes who face controversy during competition. Since September 2024, he had been co-owner and operator of a hitting facility in Panama City.

Major League Baseball released a statement on his passing. “We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Terrance Gore,” the league announced. They noted that the speedy outfielder stole 324 bases over his 11 Minor League seasons.

The Kansas City Royals wrote, “We are heartbroken from the loss of Terrance Gore, and send our love to his family and loved ones.” The Omaha Storm Chasers, the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate, stated that while he was known for his great speed, he was “even more so for his kindness and joyful smile. Terrance will be remembered as a tremendous teammate and a dedicated family man.”
