Tennis player stops mid-tiebreak to check his bag for something odd, then loses four points straight and fans think it's a fix

You don’t see that every day.

French tennis player Ugo Humbert has caused a huge controversy after he stopped his second-round match to check his phone right before losing. The timing of this incident has led to immediate accusations of cheating online. Humbert, who is ranked No. 38 in the world, was playing in the Open Occitanie tournament in Montpellier, France, against fellow French player Adrian Mannarino.

The match was in a tight third-set tiebreak. Humbert was leading 4-3 and was about to serve. Instead of focusing on the game, Humbert paused the match. According to the Daily Mail, he walked over to his bag sitting courtside. Cameras captured him going through his belongings, pulling out his phone, looking at the screen briefly, and putting it back in his bag.

Right after returning to the court, Humbert lost the next four points in a row, losing the tiebreak and the entire match. The timing has made people connect the phone check to his sudden collapse. Unsurprisingly, social media went wild with speculation.

The phone check appeared to trigger an immediate collapse

Many people became convinced the phone check was evidence of a gambling or match-fixing scandal. One widely shared post said: “Ugo Humbert is under investigation. After going up 4-3 with serve in the deciding tiebreak, Humbert randomly stops play to check his phone and loses the next 4 points and match. How do you explain this?”

This is purely unfounded speculation right now. No evidence of gambling or match-fixing has come to light, and no official investigation has been announced since the incident happened a few days ago. Like other athletes who have faced scrutiny, such as how Hollywood Brown addressed trade rumors, Humbert may need to publicly explain his actions.

It seems unlikely that a highly ranked player like Humbert would risk his entire career by doing something like this in a nationally televised tournament in his home country. If he were involved in something shady, he probably wouldn’t make it so obvious for cameras and spectators to see.

This loss in Montpellier follows a tough stretch for Humbert. He recently suffered a first-round defeat in the Australian Open, where he lost in straight sets to Ben Shelton, who later reached the quarterfinals. Similar to Travis Kelce’s declining performance numbers, sudden drops in form can raise questions about an athlete’s future.
