The NFL has told teams that the 2026 salary cap will go above $300 million for the first time. The league expects the cap to be between $301.2 million and $305.7 million next year. This means an increase of $22 million to $27 million from the 2025 cap of $279.2 million.
This jump is similar to the $23.8 million increase between 2024 and 2025. The news shows that the NFL’s business is doing very well right now. Both players and team owners will benefit from this big rise in the salary cap. However, some teams might still struggle to balance their books.
The speed of this growth is impressive. It took 16 years for the cap to go from $100 million in 2006 to $200 million in 2022. Now it will reach $300 million just four years later. Over the last five years, the cap has grown by an average of 10.7% each year, as per Sports Illustrated.
The defending champions face the biggest financial challenge
Even with the higher cap coming, many teams are already over the limit for 2026. The Kansas City Chiefs have the biggest problem. The reigning Super Bowl champions are projected to be about $57.6 million over the cap. This shows how expensive it is to keep top players on the roster.
However, the Chiefs have a major advantage. They have the lowest dead cap number in the league at just $215,642. This gives them flexibility to make cuts or restructure contracts to get under the limit. The New Orleans Saints face a tougher situation. They are projected to be $41.3 million over the cap. The Saints also have the highest dead cap number in the league at over $90 million for 2026. This makes it very hard for them to fix their cap problems.
The Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys are both projected to be over $31 million above the limit. The Cleveland Browns are facing a shortfall of nearly $19.5 million. These teams will need to make tough decisions before the 2026 season starts.
Some teams are in great shape to spend big in 2026. The Tennessee Titans lead all teams with nearly $99 million in cap space. The Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, and New York Jets each have more than $82 million to spend. Free agents looking for big contracts will want to talk to these teams, especially with coaching changes happening across the league.
