Taylor Townsend has shared her honest feelings about Jelena Ostapenko’s apology after a heated exchange between the two during the US Open. She recently completed the season at the US Open women’s doubles tournament.
During the second round of the US Open women’s tournament on August 28, Townsend and Ostapenko competed against each other. She claimed a dominant victory of 7-5, 6-1 over Ostapenko. After the match, the Latvian player claimed that Taylor should have apologized for a net cord, to which she disagreed.
This scene led to Ostapenko accusing Townsend of having no education. However, she later apologized for her statement. In a recent conversation on CBS Mornings, Townsend opened up about the incident and claimed Ostapenko’s apology did not seem sincere.
“She doesn’t understand the magnitude of what those words mean and the weight behind them, but, I mean, it’s like, you know, there were things that transpired after the fact that i was just like ‘okay, this may not be the most sincere’.”
Townsend Won’t Tolerate Any Disrespect
The heated argument between the women became a hot topic of discussion on social media. Townsend’s response to Ostapenko was straightforward, and some might even call it classy.
In the same interview, Townsend explained the importance of respect for her. She talked about Ostapenko not understanding the weight behind the words she spoke, but still gave her a pass.
Townsend seemingly issued a warning to Ostapenko about how she doesn’t tolerate disrespect from someone whom she showed respect to first.
“I don’t tolerate disrespect and especially when I treat you with respect and with sportsmanship and I am honoring the game, don’t disrespect me.”
Townsend teamed with Katerina Siniakova in the women’s doubles tournament at the US Open. The duo earned a second-place finish in the finals after coming up short against Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski.
Ostapenko Has Been Under Fire For Her Comments
Ostapenko’s controversial comments towards Townsend about having no class and education have led to a lot of backlash from the fans. A loss from Townsend of 7-5, 6-1, seemingly caused this heated argument.
Townsend getting accused of not apologizing to Ostapenko after a net cord went in her favor didn’t help her either. Many have slammed Ostapenko for calling Townsend uneducated. Former world number one Naomi Osaka also stated that calling Townsend uneducated was one of the worst things someone could say to a tennis player.
Despite these comments, Townsend seems to have accepted Ostapenko’s apology. She said it was nice of her to apologize and explained how this incident would turn out to be a learning lesson for her. It remains to be seen if Ostapenko has something to say on the American’s comments.
