Stephen A. Smith has some heated questions about Zohran Mamdani’s policies for New York City. The newly elected mayor of NYC has been celebrating his recent win in the mayoral run. However, Smith is worried whether his ambitious initiatives are going to pan out.
Mamdani has been on a hot streak with his supporters growing every day, from all over the city and further. However, now’s the time for him to commit to his previously stated initiatives, which won’t be an easy task. Smith certainly seems to think so at least, as he questioned where the funds would come from to support his ambitions.
The ESPN analyst began discussing the topic of Mamdani’s recent mayoral race win on his Straight Shooter podcast. He noted that although he likes the democratic socialist, he’s not a big fan of his policies and is not happy with his win. Smith further added that the people who are in love with Mamdani aren’t the people paying bills every day.
“I just want to know where the money is coming from. See, I count. OK, I count, and I can’t tell you how many young teenagers — it could be daughters, it could be nieces and nephews, it could be friends and family members, or relatives of folks along that age gap, and you’re asking the same question. And you know what you come up with?” Smith said. “The people who love Mamdani the most are not people who pay bills every day.”
Smith Believes Mamdani’s Policies Are Going To Make NYC Unattractive
Zohran Mamdani has made history as the first-ever Muslim to be elected mayor of New York City. His supporters are still in love with him and are celebrating this historic win as well. But the time has also come for Mamdani to make true on his word to make life easier for the residents of his city.
However, Stephen A. Smith has some reservations about the whole thing. In fact, he’s outright stated on his podcast that he’s concerned for NYC. The ESPN host claimed that putting higher taxes on wealthy business owners could drive them out of the city. He noted that this move would end up making the place unattractive for them, which would end up raising taxes for the residents.
“So the money that they paid on their homes or on rent, they move out of the city or the state. Businesses follow. And ultimately the tax burden falls on New Yorkers out there — which means that rent freezes, which is also something that Mamdani pushed. Is that really going to be plausible? Are you really going to be able to freeze rent or are you going to end up hiking it because you don’t have enough people here to pay it? Tax revenue, where are you getting that from?” Smith said.
Mamdani Wants To Raise Taxes For The Rich
Zohran Mamdani has lofty ambitions for New York City. However, his biggest one is raising taxes for the rich. He’s proposed a 2% raise on taxes for the wealthy. Although Stephen A. Smith has argued that the move might backfire if they end up moving out of the city.
Smith has questioned the plausibility of these policies that Mamdani wants to implement. He’s also called attention to the potential consequences if they’re put in place as well. It seems that the ball is entirely in Mamdani’s court, and it’s his shot to take for the win.
