Stephen A. Smith Apologizes For Saying Charlie Kirk Helped The Texans Defeat The Steelers During An On-Air Mishap. The Slip-Up Left Viewers Stunned And Amused

Stephen A. Smith mistakenly name-drops Charlie Kirk while reviewing the game between the Texans and the Steelers.

ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith is trending across social media after a bizarre on-air blunder during a recent episode of First Take. While analyzing the Houston Texans’ dominant 30-6 Wild Card victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith attempted to give credit to a standout performance.

However, instead of naming the star receiver responsible for the win, he accidentally named a controversial political figure, leaving his co-hosts and viewers in a state of shock. The mistake occurred when Smith praised “Charlie Kirk” for having a massive game with eight receptions and 144 yards. In reality, those impressive statistics belonged to Texans wide receiver Christian Kirk, who had just set a postseason record for the franchise.

As soon as the words left his mouth, co-host Shae Peppler Cornette jumped in to correct him. A visibly flustered Smith immediately realized his error, clutching his head and apologizing profusely to the audience.  Despite the quick correction, the moment was instantly captured by fans and has since become one of the most viral mistakes of his long broadcasting career.

“I’m sorry, I apologize. Oh my God, I meant Christian Kirk,” he stated.

Stephen A. Smith Confused NFL Star Christian Kirk With Charlie Kirk

The confusion between Christian Kirk and Charlie Kirk highlights the overlap of sports and politics in Stephen A. Smith’s daily commentary. Because Smith has recently expanded his platform to include more political and social analysis, critics suggest he may have simply had the wrong Kirk on his mind.

Christian Kirk was the actual hero of the game, stepping up for Houston after fellow receiver Nico Collins left with an injury. His touchdown and consistent play were the main reasons the Texans were able to blow out the Steelers and advance to the Divisional Round.

This isn’t the first time an announcer has mixed up a player with a public figure, but the specific context of Charlie Kirk’s recent death added a layer of discomfort to the gaffe. Smith had previously spoken about the activist on his podcast, which likely contributed to the name being fresh in his memory.

Social Media Reacts To The On-Air Blunder During NFL Analysis

Social media platforms were flooded with memes and jokes within minutes of the broadcast airing. Fans on X began photoshopping Charlie Kirk’s face onto Texans jerseys, while others joked that the Texans must have made a very unusual mid-season signing.

A fan reacted to Smith’s blunder and simply called First Take a ‘clown show’.

Despite the heavy trolling, Smith’s statistics for the player were actually 100% accurate, proving he had done his homework even if the name came out wrong. The Texans are now moving on to face the New England Patriots, and fans are eagerly waiting to see if Smith can get Christian Kirk’s name right in his next preview.
