As we turn the page and embrace what’s ahead, we look forward to our most anticipated sports games of 2023. We will continue to have some yearly sports releases that feel like they were only released to fulfill a contract. That said, some years provide some unique experiences in the form of new sports titles and, even occasionally, a sports game that returns after a long slumber.
This year is shaping up to provide a mixture of many things. We have some new titles we have yet to experience and a few returning from the past. Others fall into the category of non-annual releases that will have a presence in the current year.
It’s been far too long since we’ve had our hands on a boxing game. EA’s Fight Night Champion was the most recent major boxing game release and that was nearly a decade ago. As of late, Steel City Interactive has given fans of the sweet science a glimmer of hope with Undisputed. Given the positivity surrounding the first two betas, the latest version of the game (early access) looks to be as polished as ever, leveraging feedback collected along the way as well as introducing a few new tricks here and there.
So how have things progressed since the last time we had some hands-on time? Well, let’s look at the tale of the tape!
With a confirmed launch date of March 24 for EA Sports PGA Tour, EA’s latest endeavor into the world of golf video games is starting to feel tangible. Dealing with the postponement from last year, some of my excitement had dwindled over the last few months, but after viewing the official gameplay trailer for PGA Tour, the excitement has been rekindled in its purest form.
That said, my thirst for authentic professional golf has been relatively satiated as of late. Thanks to the efforts of 2K Sports with PGA Tour 2K23, it’s not like I have not had the chance to play a solid game. It’s a title that includes a career mode that is deep and offers a lot of replay value for my money.
I’ve been an Atlanta Braves fan my entire life. Like most kids who grew up loving baseball, I dreamed I would play for my favorite team some day or at least make it in professional baseball. As I got older and that dream was clearly never going to be anything more than a dream, I drifted into fantasizing what it would be like owningmy favorite team like Steve Cohen.
It truly is an astounding thought, right? Not just having the piles of money it takes to own and operate a major sports franchise. Simply being associated with your favorite team would be a coup for many, but owning the team and being involved in its attempt at winning championships sounds even more enticing than playing.
It’s a complex answer on some level, but it’s simple at the same time. Kazunori Yamauchi, CEO of Polyphony Digital, has continuously battled rumors about the series coming to PC and then put an end to those rumors. The reasoning basically comes down to the simple fact that Polyphony does not seem to want a PC version. Even with various Sony-aligned games like Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, and God of War coming to PC in recent years, nothing is imminent with Gran Turismo 7.
As a huge fan of PC gaming myself, the reasoning behind wanting the series on PC is simple. The simplicity of hooking up my favorite wheel peripheral is always an attractive scenario, and the possibility of community mods for the series would be enough to make some purchase a gaming PC.
Over the last couple months, we’ve reviewed several aspects of Diamond Dynasty in MLB The Show 22. We looked at content and discussed card art, card types, and much more. We took a look at the program structure including Monthly Awards, featured programs and the rest. Most recently, we looked at the game modeswithin Diamond Dynasty and talked about how the offline suite in DD really needs some work.
This time around, we’re going to focus on what I consider to be the most crucial ingredient in the overall Show experience: gameplay.
Last Sunday during the NFC Championship game, we were all forced to suffer through the indignity of watching the 49ers attempt to beat a supremely talented team Eagles team without their starting quarterback. When surprisingly effective rookie QB Brock Purdy went out with an elbow injury early in the game, the team had to turn to veteran Josh Johnson. Unfortunately, Josh Johnson eventually would be sidelined as well.
This required the team to briefly explore the idea of putting emergency quarterback (and usual running back) Christian McCaffrey under center before finally bringing Purdy back in to mostly just hand the ball off and accept inevitable defeat.
