Minneapolis witnessed the tragic shooting of two US citizens by ICE agents. The country is already in uproar owing to ICE’s aggressive actions. But embers of the fire are now reaching Europe. America is going to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the fans believe that it is a highly risky decision. According to reports from BBC Sport, Football Supporters Europe has expressed its concern over the ongoing conditions in the United States.
Ronan Evain, executive director of FSE, said: “At this stage, travelling fans are left with little to no information as to what will be allowed or not at Fifa venues, or what to expect from the police elsewhere in the country.” His organisation also fears “the complete absence of security doctrine from FIFA for the upcoming World Cup. There is no clarity as to what will be allowed in the stadiums, who will be deployed inside, which police forces will be working where.”
Additionally, the US has also not invited police delegates from the visiting countries. These spotters were the last line of defense protecting the visiting fans. For the first time in the history of the World Cup, a country has refused to follow the set doctrine. The fact that Trump has not ruled out the possibility of ICE raids targeting immigrants at World Cup venues is an alarm bell that threatens to bring massive consequences. FSE’s concern is the direct reaction to the aggravated actions that have terrorized the US for the past month.
US Is At The Risk Of Losing Its 2026 World Cup Host Privilege
FIFA has not yet tried to put pressure on the Trump government to curb the aggression for the safety of the incoming fans. However, they did try to reassure the scared fans about the upcoming games and their safety during the same. “The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest, safest, and most welcoming sporting event in history…Fans from around the globe can look forward to a smooth, secure, and truly unforgettable tournament.”
The real difficulty arises due to the lack of confidence displayed by European governments. The European Democratic Party is already in contact with football federations to forfeit the tournament. They are afraid of the “growing concerns over legal and administrative uncertainty, including the risk of non-transparent or discretionary visa decisions and border controls, as well as potentially invasive practices involving personal data and online activity”, which “may translate into concrete risks for European citizens”.
