Skate Story Review Roundup: What Are Critics Saying?

What are critics saying about the post-apocalyptic skating title?

After shocking the gaming world with its demo in Steam’s Next Fest, Skate Story is finally out, and it’s just how people expected it — a neon-glassy skating game, with a striking art style, phenomenal music, and a very weird story.

Before you buy any game, the usual thing to do is to read reviews and know whether it’s worth getting the game or not. In Skate Story’s case, the initial reviews have been pretty solid. Critics loved the game’s innovative take on skateboarding and visual storytelling.

It’s still early to call the game a 10/10, but so far the reviews have been positive. In fact, it’s currently rated as “Mostly Positive” on Steam

If you really want to experience the game, I’d highly recommend trying out the demo. It gives you enough to tell you what the full game will be about and leaves you wanting more.

Enough said, let’s get into what the critics have been saying about Skate Story.

Critics’ Review Of Skate Story

The consensus of most reviews is that the game stands out with its music and art style. The skating mechanics are nothing ground-breaking, but fit the game’s vibe perfectly. It doesn’t feature a super simulation-like skating as seen in games like Skate or Skate Session; it’s closer to Tony Hawk, where tricks are mapped to buttons or combinations of buttons. But the game combats this with phenomenal camera work. IGN explained it better:

It’s all very grounded and weighty, which I like, and the tricks look great in motion with the low-slung camera that tumbles to the ground like a physical object each time you bail and shatter to bits. -IGN

IGN gave the game an 8/10 with this verdict

Fusing a solid foundation of satisfyingly grounded skate tricks with a bizarre, abstract world bathed in neon and starlight, Skate Story is a wild trip. – IGN

Most other reviews had more or less the same opinion.

Even still, Skate Story manages to stand out. For all of its surreal elements, it really understands skateboarding, and it turns out that hell is the ideal skate park. – The Verge

A stylish lunicidal skater with peerless vibes and devilishly sleek flip tricks. – PC Gamer (87 Rating)

Skate Story is, hands down, my game of the year, and perhaps one of my favorite narrative games of all time. It is beautiful and funny and poignant and challenging – all of the things one wants out of a well-told tale – and above all, at least to me, a devastatingly rich text that I feel borderline gleeful about unpacking, slowly, at my own pace, over time. –  Eurogamer

Lastly, the game currently has a rating of 80 on Metacritic. But, it’s only from 20 reviews.

Overall, Skate Story might be the best skating game to release this year, at least that’s what the reviews have been claiming.
