Sherrone Moore Suspended Again as NCAA Hits Michigan With Massive Sign-Stealing Penalty. More Could Be Coming

The NCAA has not been kind to Michigan and Sherrone Moore.

The head football coach of the University of Michigan, Sherrone Moore, has faced a major setback as he has been suspended once again for another game. With the coach already facing two-game suspensions, this could prove to be disastrous for the upcoming season.

Sherrone Moore has already been suspended twice in the past three years. He was suspended for pandemic-era recruiting violations, which resulted in missing one game during the early 2023 season. Due to his previous suspensions as part of self-imposed sanctions for the sign-stealing scandal, Sherrone Moore will be missing two games in 2025.

Moore will be suspended for weeks 3 and 4 of the 2025 season, as well as the first game of the 2026 season. Moore has agreed to a suspension for weeks 3 and 4, covering the home game against the Big Ten and the Central Michigan opener on the road at Nebraska.

Why The NCAA Isn’t Done With Michigan’s Coaching Staff Just Yet

While the Wolverines have been dealt a big blow with another suspension for Moore, the whole coaching staff has been punished. The NCAA made it a point for everyone to note this slap on the wrist for the entire Michigan team, as Jim Harbaugh received a 10-year show cause order restricting him from any athletic activities during this period. Connor Stallions was handed a similar fate, as he received an 8-year show-cause period.

The NCAA has also imposed a hefty $20 million fine on Michigan and is set to lose out on any competitive post-season revenue for the next two years. While we’re not sure if this closes the book on the sign-stealing scandal from the 2023 season, the Wolverines have been left in a difficult spot already. The coaching staff has been leveled with this punishment, and now needs to be majorly readjusted.

The sign-stealing scandal has not been kind to the Michigan Wolverines and their coaching staff, to say the least. However, some fans still believe that it could’ve gone far worse if the NCAA wanted to show its wrath.

Michigan Paid For the Title, And Sherrone Moore Might Pay Even More

Michigan has still walked out of this scandal, still holding on to their national title after seemingly paying for it. However, it has come at the cost of missing out on Sherrone Moore, for three games. Two games during the weeks in 2025 and another in 2026. The coach has also been avoiding discussing his notable absence for the season.

Some notable replacements for Sherrone Moore till he serves his suspension could be the defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale, who has decades of NFL experience. The associate head coach, Biff Poggi, could also be another replacement, as he was once the right-hand man of Jim Harbaugh in Ann Arbor. He was also the head man at Charlotte last season.

Despite the three-game suspension, Moore is not barred from engaging in coaching and doing other athletic activities with the team during the show-cause period. However, it’s still unknown who will be Sherrone Moore’s temporary replacement in leading the University of Michigan’s football team in the upcoming games in 2025 and 2026.
