'Rory is becoming more and more a LEGEND': Trump leads tributes after McIlroy beats Scheffler by one shot to defend his Masters title

Applause from The Oval Office

Rory McIlroy successfully defended his Masters title, beating Scottie Scheffler by just one shot. The 36-year-old becomes only the fourth player in the tournament’s 90-year history to win back-to-back green jackets, placing him alongside legends like Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

McIlroy’s road to this second straight win was not straightforward. After a strong Friday that gave him a six-shot lead, he nearly saw it all slip away during a chaotic third round on Saturday, with the lead disappearing entirely. He managed to reset and hold his nerve through the final 18 holes to claim the title.

By holding off a strong challenge from world number one Scottie Scheffler, McIlroy brought his total major championship count to six. This victory comes just a year after he completed his career Grand Slam at the same Augusta venue, making back-to-back titles at the Masters even more remarkable. According to The Daily Mail, McIlroy’s incredible achievement drew applause from President Donald Trump.

McIlroy’s back-to-back Masters wins put him firmly in the conversation as one of golf’s all-time greats

President Donald Trump was among the first to congratulate McIlroy, posting on his Truth Social platform. He wrote, “Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on another Great Championship, The Masters! He performed tremendously under intense pressure, something which few people would be able to even think about doing.”

Trump continued, “With each year, Rory is becoming more and more a LEGEND! I look forward to watching him compete in two weeks at Doral. The quality of Professional Golfers today has become extraordinary, each and every one of them. They should all be proud of the way they played at The Masters this weekend!”

In other sports news, Brittney Griner’s journey from a Russian penal colony to a $1 million WNBA contract is another remarkable story of resilience making headlines this week. Trump’s mention of Doral refers to an upcoming tournament at the Blue Monster course, one of the venues associated with the President.

Trump is a well-known golf enthusiast and frequently hosts professional events at his own courses. The world of sports continues to face integrity questions off the field as well, with a recent case where an AI influencer deceived hundreds of thousands of followers by faking encounters with F1 stars Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, raising serious concerns about transparency online.

McIlroy celebrated the win with his wife Erica Stoll, daughter Poppy, and his parents Rosie and Gerry McDonald. The victory was a significant personal moment as well as a historic sporting one, coming after a weekend that tested his composure at every turn.

With six majors now to his name and consecutive Masters titles, McIlroy has firmly established himself as one of the greatest players of his generation. The golf world is already calling this one of the more memorable finishes in recent Masters history.
