Green Bay Packers edge rusher Rashan Gary posted a farewell message to the team on Instagram, and then deleted it just minutes later. Sources close to the team still cannot confirm whether Gary is staying or leaving, leaving his future very uncertain.
According to Heavy.com, the deleted post was an emotional graphic in which Gary thanked the team and its fans. He reflected on being drafted in 2019, calling it “one of the greatest moments of my life, and it always will be.” He also said, “The opportunity to represent Green Bay and Packers Nation across the country and around the world is something I will never forget.”
Gary’s message strongly pointed toward a departure. He wrote, “Like all chapters in life, this one has come to an end,” and added, “The love, the energy, and the memories mean more than words can explain.” He ended the post by saying, “On to my next stop, nowhere near done yet. All 6’5″, 275… can’t wait.”
Gary’s future with the Packers is still up in the air, despite the deleted post
Shortly after the post went live, it disappeared. Reports then confirmed that Gary had not been traded or released, with one reporter noting that “Rashan Gary has not yet been traded or released, per source, as both options remain on the table.” After the deletion, sources indicated that Gary’s account had been “hacked” and that the graphic was fake.
Emotional farewells from players being moved on are becoming a theme in the NFL, much like when DJ Moore’s goodbye to the Bears went viral for all the right reasons. Regardless of the hacking claim, Gary’s future with Green Bay remains very unclear. Both a trade and a release are still on the table, according to sources.
On the financial side, Gary signed a four-year, $96 million extension in October 2023. If the Packers release him, they would save nearly $11 million in 2026, but they would also take on a dead cap hit of around $17 million. Big roster overhauls are happening across the league, with Tom Brady’s sweeping roster changes with the Raiders being another example of how quickly things can shift.
Finding a trade partner may also be difficult because of the size of his contract. Many teams could be reluctant to take on such a large deal, which limits Green Bay’s options. If a trade does not work out, the Packers are left with two choices: keep Gary on the roster, which general manager Brian Gutekunst has previously hinted at as a possibility, or release him. Both Gary and the team are now waiting to see how this situation plays out.
