PlayStation 5 sales saw a noticeable spike in the United States recently, and the reason is pretty straightforward. With Sony confirming a significant price increase, players rushed to grab the console before it became more expensive.
The surge came just as Sony announced a global price hike for the PlayStation 5. The timing created a short window where buyers could still pick up the console at its previous price, and many clearly took advantage of it.
Price Hike Triggers Buying Rush

At the end of March, Sony confirmed that starting April 2, the standard and digital PS5 models in the US would increase by $100, while the PS5 Pro would jump by $150. According to the company, the move was necessary to keep up with the rising cost of gaming hardware.
The announcement immediately caused fans to buy the console before it got expensive. Just to put it into perspective, the week ending on April 4 had the highest sales of the year so far. Given the price increase, this will probably be the highest peak we will see. The credit goes to industry analyst Mat Piscatella of Circana for the information, who showed that the US spending on gaming hardware nearly doubled compared to the same time last year.
Rather than holding off, people chose to act quickly. For many, the price increase was enough of a push to finally upgrade or jump into the current generation. On the other hand, retailers also stocked up before the console got expensive.
It’s all just a case of FOMO.
Why The Price Hike Is Scary
This is not the first time Sony has raised PS5 prices. Similar increases were rolled out last year across regions, including Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. In some cases, even the digital edition saw adjustments.
And, it’s not just limited to Sony either, with the increasing cost of RAM and other essential components, companies have no choice but to increase prices. The PS5 price hike is just a start; there are reports that even Xbox and Nintendo will see a price hike. In fact, Nintendo’s ex-sales lead stated that a Nintendo price hike is “inevitable”. In short, gaming is getting more expensive, and there is nothing we can do about it
For this reason, Sony appears to be taking the necessary measures, and this price hike is just a start. There are reports that the PS6 will likely be delayed because of this. For now, the takeaway is simple. When prices go up, demand can spike just as quickly, and in this case, PS5 buyers in the US wasted no time getting ahead of the increase.
