As a commentator for the Philadelphia Phillies and former MLB player, Ben Davis is no stranger to injuries and accidents on the diamond. However, he recently got involved in a mishap of his own that happened away from the field. He revealed that he got cut by a chainsaw at his home in Pennsylvania. But the bigger story was not his injury, but how he reacted and handled it.
As reported by The New York Post, Davis recounted his freak accident. While handling some fallen trees on his property in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania – a common occurrence in his residence – Davis’s chainsaw slipped. He sliced his knee three inches deep, right down to the bone. Before the accident, this was nothing but routine yard work.
Instead of doing what most people would do in the situation, Davis said he did not go to the doctor and took matters into his own hands.“It’s a chainsaw! So, I got Steri-Strips holding it together and a big bandage on top with some Neosporin…“It needs stitches, but I’m OK. I’m fine. I got a bandage on it. I do have to keep it straight because every time I bend it, it opens up even more,” he said.
Davis’s Decision Could Have Caused A Serious Infection
Many thought his decision not to receive medical help from a doctor could pose a danger to him. Chainsaws usually have rust and harbor harmful bacteria that can cause infections, like tetanus. So, skipping the hospital after a deep laceration like Davis’s could risk the person sustaining severe complications.
“This is absolutely moronic. A filthy chain with oil and grease cuts you deep. Infection risk is real, also need tetanus,” one wrote. One expressed concern and gave sound advice, saying: ”Ben! Go get those edges approximated – need to watch for infection potential- Neosporin probably won’t cut it ( no pun intended) if wound to the bone as you said.” Another added: “I’m sorry but you deserve whatever happens to your knee for not getting it taken care of.”
By the looks of it, Davis is safe. His immediate remedy worked. “I am very, very fortunate. Last night I was laying in bed with my wife and she said, ‘I’m so sorry this happened to you.’ And I said, ‘I’m actually thrilled this it only as bad as it was,’” he recalled. Perhaps like Lindsey Vohn’s case, he won’t need amputation, or it is not as gruesome as getting stabbed multiple times. However, Davis should have gone to the hospital to avoid any risk altogether.
