Charles Barkley took a not-so-subtle shot at ESPN during a live broadcast after repeated technical glitches derailed an on-air interview, telling the network to “pay your bills” as fans watched. The moment unfolded during NBA Tip-Off, the pregame show featuring the Inside the NBA crew, ahead of Wednesday night’s Los Angeles Lakers vs. Cleveland Cavaliers matchup.
The interruption happened while Barkley was questioning ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania about potential sleeper teams ahead of the NBA trade deadline. Charania’s video feed suddenly cut out mid-answer, briefly returned, then dropped again a bit later. The awkward pauses set Barkley up perfectly for a jab that went viral.
According to Awful Announcing, Barkley reacted immediately after the second disruption, quipping, “ESPN, pay your bills, man. Pay your bills. I know times are tough.” The Hall of Famer followed it up by joking that Charania “forgot to pay his phone bill,” leaning fully into the chaos rather than trying to smooth it over.
Barkley Remains ESPN’s Most Unfiltered Voice
When Charania reappeared for a third attempt, the insider appeared flustered but in good spirits, asking the panel if they could hear and see him. He added that ESPN was “on top of it,” while acknowledging he had little control over the situation. The moment ended with laughter rather than analysis, but the damage was done, with Barkley once again stealing the spotlight. Barkley also took a massive jab at Rodger Goodell recently as well, showing his unfiltered edge.
The incident was just the latest example of Barkley refusing to filter himself despite Inside the NBA’s evolving relationship with ESPN, which can get a bit controversial, as in the case of their shots at Jerry Jone’s Cowboys. The longtime TNT staple in Barkley has recently poked fun at ESPN’s lighter Inside the NBA schedule, even telling Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd to “shut the hell up” after Cowherd questioned the show’s future and relevance.
Over the weekend, Barkley also mocked the idea of fans paying to attend a game between the Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets. Moreover, Barkley has been inseparable from Inside the NBA for more than 20 years, shaping the show’s identity as much as any highlight or stat sheet. Since joining the TNT studio crew in 2000, Barkley has become the program’s most unpredictable and influential voice, blending blunt analysis with unfiltered humor that consistently cuts through the polish of modern sports television.
The former NBA MVP was added to Inside the NBA alongside Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith at a time when studio shows were becoming increasingly formulaic. Barkley immediately stood out by ignoring traditional broadcasting etiquette, opting instead for honesty that often bordered on confrontation. Inside the NBA has won 19 Sports Emmy Awards, with Barkley cited by many fans as a main reason for its enduring popularity.
