Out of the Park Baseball 20 Announced, Releases March 22nd

The folks at Out of the Park Developments have announced Out of the Park Baseball 20, releasing March 22nd. If you are interested in pre-ordering this year’s game, you can visit the OOTP Developments website today and get 10% off.

No matter how you like to play, we’ve got something for you in Out of the Park Baseball 20. Take the reins of your favorite club on your own in the 2019 season (or any season in history), compete with and against friends in an online league, battle players around the world each week in our Perfect Team mode, create your own completely customized universe, or try any of the other dozens of options. Out of the Park Baseball 20 is the culmination of 20 years of building the best sports strategy gaming experience possible.

The features of this year’s game included improved AI, new integrated live services, and Perfect Team 2.0.

Integrated live services all season long!

For the first time ever, OOTP features Live Services for MLB rosters! You can start a new MLB game any day during the regular season and Postseason with up-to-date rosters, standings, stats and player ratings, or to update player ratings in your current game based on their current performances. Can you keep your favorite team’s hot start going throughout the season, or take control to turn around a disappointing start?

Our brand new 2019 roster sets include all projected Opening Day MLB rosters as well as the complete minor league system down to rookie leagues, including independent leagues.
All Major League (and over a thousand minor league) player ratings are based on Dan Szymborski’s popular ZiPS player projection system. The remaining minor league players are carefully rated by hand by our recently upgraded research team.

In addition, OOTP 20 features 12 international leagues (Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Italy, The Netherlands, Mexico and Cuba, plus 4 brand new leagues with Germany, France, Spain and the Czech Republic) and several US and international independent leagues. All of the teams have accurate and projected 2019 rosters.

Improved 3D Animations

We hit the motion capture studio for the first time ever to create hundreds of new animations which take the 3D in-game action to a whole new level. Diving plays, shoestring catches, hitters celebrating a walk-off in style: it’s all there (except for a fancy bat flip creation feature — sorry about that)!

Improved AI, Game Engine and Modern Strategic Options

Baseball is constantly evolving, as is our award-winning simulation engine. This year we have introduced several new strategic options, such as an opener and a follower as MLB teams continue to seek every possible advantage to winning in 2019. We have also improved the simulation engine and AI to handle and counter these new options and also make the smartest strategic decisions possible at any time during the game.
But that’s only the start! We’ve improved all AI-related aspects of the game, including trading, contract logic, general roster building, and player evaluation, which lies at the core of the entire OOTP AI, resulting in the most challenging and rewarding gameplay ever in OOTP 20.

Perfect Team mode 2.0

Perfect Team was a massive success after we introduced the revolutionary online competition mode for OOTP 19 in November of last year. Over 15,000 total teams have competed in the exciting universe of Perfect Team, over 5,000,000 player cards have been pulled, history was written, and countless epic moments were created.

For OOTP 20, Perfect Team mode will return with more cards (over 3,200 total) and more features, including exciting tournaments (coming in April), collection missions (coming May), an improved auction house, more achievements, an additional league level (6 in total) and all the new strategy and AI improvements of the core game. Build your very own Perfect Team and battle the best OOTP managers in the world!

Much More

Out of the Park Baseball 20 is the result of 20 years of authentic baseball innovation. There is so much more we’ve added, including:

– All new Spray Charts for players
– Improved historical league player ratings and simulation accuracy
– All new tiebreaker calculations
– Added support to have players in lineup backup other positions, and substitute in starting lineups for them
– Teams can participate in multiple tournaments at the same time
– And even more!

We’ll be on top of the latest news and announcements from the OOTP team, be sure to check back often between now and release for more news!

Super stoked about this game. OOTP 19 was an amazing game that took all of my free time. I can't wait to get my hands on OOTP 20. I can't believe it's been 20 years... Here's to 20 more OOTP!! Love what you do. Keep doing it!
This is the absolute baseball simulation game available. MLB The Show is the  cream of the crop for consoles but I personally believe this game for PC is the best overall & in depth baseball game available. Looks like they've also added more new stuff for OOTP 20. This game is a must get for die-hard baseball fans.
I know PC simulation baseball has become less popular in recent years but MLB The Show is all there is now for consoles besides RBI Baseball which is an arcade style baseball game.  I know that I'm going to pick me up a copy of OOTP 20 just like I have with this game for the last 3 years.
Such a great game. Easy to get immersed in. Everything you could want in managing an organization combined with the ability to edit and mod pretty much anything you want. So impressed with what OOTP team pulls off each year! I'm addicted
Excited for this edition! I recently upgraded to 19 for the sale price, but smarter AI and the ability to create even more strategically nuanced lineups have me thinking about preordering. Also like the shade they threw about the bat flips

They are putting in a feature called "Live Services" where you can start from any date in the season with the rosters, injuries, stats, and records all true to life. That'll be a big deal for quite a few. Even better, I think, with this "Live Services" addition, you can elect to auto-update player ratings in an existing game as the real life season progresses. So, say goodbye to restarting due to dusty, old rosters...if someone breaks out in real life, just click a button and you've got that in your veins, too. Makes a lot of sense.
In addition to that, more granularity with 3D/animations, AI/logic upgrades (including new opener/follower designations for bullpen guys), and being able to insert a starting position player as a backup at other positions on the depth chart has my excitement level at 11 (on the 2-8 scale) for this game.

I've got 19. Why should I buy 20? And moreso, if I want to buy it, why not wait until year's end when it's on sale for $5?

PES3, I would read the article that began this thread. If those updates don’t seem worth the extra money to you: stick with 19, it’s a great game!

In an era where so many publishers are disregarding management/franchise modes, I'm glad OOTP is still around and constantly improving.

Franchise mode across the board (Madden/2K/The Show) is beginning to get unplayable five, ten seasons down the line. OOTP on the other hand is just getting started at that point...
Very excited for the release! Now I just gotta figure out what team I want to roll with

    Very, very intriguing.
All the irl players in my save are gone but I can imagine how interesting that will be, especially for prospects as they are very hard to rate and older players since that's the other hard part of the curve to rate accurately. Same for stories like an irl player literally comes out of nowhere and OOTP has him but in the indy leagues with low ratings or returns after retirement or whatnot for a couple flash years before gone for good.
Also for those who like to follow real MLB closely in the near term years before letting the save go free range. That feature could help keep guys they think are veering too far "off the rails" back closer to IRL.
Looking forward to this. I spent so many hours in Ootp 19, and I'm sure I'll do the same for 20.
Really hoping for some improved trade logic and to be able to scout coaches without going into the editor. That was probably the worst thing about Ootp last year that there wasn't a good way to see how good the coaches were you were hiring without cheating

You will NOT be disappointed if you jump into OOTP. Everything you could want in managing a franchise is here and you can let the computer AUTO anything you don't want to be detailed with. Talk about IMMERSION. My biggest stress each year is do I keep my current save going or start a new one??
One reason I buy every year whether the new features overwhelm me or not is....I want to support developers like Markus that are in this for people like me! While others have moved on to card-based microtransaction type games to make $, OOTP still provides the thrill of managing a franchise and I want to support him. But trust me, this year's OOTP 20 features will make 19 seem old-school to me! Spray charts..wow! I'm going to feel like a real manager/GM.

Yeah, this will be a pretty cool feature and it didn't even make my top 3 list for OOTP 20. Now that's what it's like to be satisfied with how a game is evolving.
Yeah I'm preordering asap. Just waiting until next weekend when I get another check in to replace my $460 school payment.
All of these new features are great, but I think the best thing is that the game structure doesn't change at all, or if it does they tell you. For example, if you tweak aging and development in OOTP 19, odds are its going to work just about the same in OOTP 20. For console games, they're always tweaking gameplay so much that sliders are always independent for each game and just about never work for multiple games (ex. The Show 18 to 19)

I have a sneaky suspicion that the OOTP thread is going to get a bump in activity.

That would be pretty nice, but this year's thread died out pretty quickly after some early excitement (despite KBLover's best efforts to bring us some Angels baseball reports). I think most of the people who are really invested in this game do their board-work over at OOTP Developments Forum. Others that just kinda dabble until MLB The Show comes out get siphoned off pretty quickly.

    I hope so.
I'll be (and still am) here, but I'm sure everyone is tired of me going on about my Angels in the new world of MLB/NPB gradual merging (or seems that way anyway lol).
That's one of the real reasons I slowed down here. After all, it's not KBLover's OOTP19 Franchise Progress.

You could always do a thread in the dynasty section if you're worried about that--or--heck, your own dedicated franchise thread in this OOTP forum and I doubt anyone would mind.
People are probably still reading you but if they're anything like me they get too lazy to like/comment.

Nice to know I haven't gotten on anyone's nerves :D I'll start posting more again, then. If nothing else - maybe show the good kind of craziness that can happen in OOTP even in a real-ish (as much as 2043-in-2019 can be "real") setup.
In 20, I might start a second save, expand and take an expansion, or play another team I usually don't in baseball games - like the Rockies.

BTW, I read this and my team lost 4 extra inning games in a row.
I blame you of course. :signball:

Cant wait to see what the animations look like

Agreed. They were "primitive" by modern console game standards, but already far surpassed what I was expecting for this year. So soon after coming off the "pawns" lol. They mentioned improved animations in OOTP 20 so it should be even better/more detailed.

TBH, after the jump we saw to pawns and then to actual player models, id say its probably around "Tap Sports Baseball" or "Axis Football." Probably will be at that level in another year or two, but right now id say its probably not too far off.

I'm getting BBPro '98 vibes watching a game as it is. Reminds me of the roster moves then watch games routine I did in that series.
I wonder if the diving and such we see now is tied to ratings or those Fielding Edge percentages (Even or less likely = effort play animation if he makes it?).

If its on the level graphic wise of Tap Sports Baseball to go along with the sim aspect mannnnn...last year was good in and of itself but that would be awesome!

I so badly want them to announce that playing online with friends is easier. It's the one thing that's keeping me from enjoying OOTP fully.

    THIS!
I have a group of friends (10-15) who played MLB The Show online franchise. Now that they took it away we have been looking into OOTP.
But with the hassle of exporting and importing files, it's kind of a buzz kill for some.
If they ever perfect the system and put it into the game without the extra user stuff, the game would blow up.

Or others like me ended up having their busiest summer ever haha. This year should be a lot calmer and my franchise and posting should stay alive throughout the summer until grad school kills me and dumps my body out in the woods during the fall.

This is a little off topic, but is there an easier way to edit rosters (stats, overall ratings) outside of going into each player individually and making edits there? Trying to get my 19 carryover edited to my liking before transferring to 20.

Try exporting the roster to CSV/Excel and I think you can edit it properly computer style. I usually grind thru player by player, but old habits die hard. What can I say?

    I lied. You're not on your own...yet
    I just tried some things.
When you do "export roster" it'll save the file as a notepad .txt file in your saved games-->-->import/export folder.
To open the file for editing, fire up Excel (or similar) and then open your .txt file from within Excel and it'll ask you some questions. It's a comma delimited file. That will get you a readable file in Excel. Do your edits. As many as you want. Save your work as .csv (comma delimited) format. Go back to OOTP and import the roster file you worked on.
All that worked for me just now. Happy editing!

Did you get to play around with any more of this since we discussed last night? Curious to know if you did and what you thought. You think these are specific to game they are exported from or you think they could be shared and loaded into multiple user games?
No, I didn't do anything else. I'm sure it's general though. Excel files, .csv, and .txt are pretty much universal file formats that you can transfer between PCs. The import/export command is in the OOTP menu no matter what save you're playing.
I'm still excited about this one, but I wish the updates were a little better. The living roster is going to be great for those of us who have a habit of restarting franchises. Nothing else from the announcements seem all that new though. Mostly some QoL changes under the hood, granted the game is already so deep there isn't much else they can do.
I really do wish there was some mention on coaching though. I want a better way to navigate coaches.

Please don't take this as me white knighting for OOTP...lol...but there's more than just Live Services that has me impatiently waiting for 20 to come out.
I am really stoked about simply being able to designate someone that's a starter at one position as a backup at another position. This has me way, way too excited! Like way, way, way too excited for some reason--it always makes me sad when I decide to sub in my most versatile guy as a starting position player only for all the backup spots to empty out. I also think the new "opener" and "follower" designations for your pitching staff will be interesting to dabble with, and especially if MLB teams really dive into that strategy more this upcoming season. Could be really cool to do with a rebuilding project.
The other thing that has hooked me is the mo-capped animations. No joke, but apparently they got Markus into a motion capture studio to help broaden their set of animations you see in played games. Them adding in the 3D aspect with actual animations has changed me from fast-sim only to someone who manages games as well.
OOTP is also the type of game that when they say they tweaked some AI (as they've done for trades this year etc), they actually did it. It's not just "and more" boilerplate that we get from other games.
As OOTP becomes more visually attractive (or as The Show becomes ever more deep and versatile under the hood), we come closer to having the perfect baseball game. I don't care which studio makes this game first.
Coaches do need to be better. You're right. Searching for which ones are good with young players is a total pain in the neck as it is. Why that QoL thing is lagging behind so many other things is strange.

I like this, too, but whenever I feel and see guys happy about a feature we used to have (this used to be in OOTP6 at the least), it just reminds me about how gaming is just getting back to where we were 15 years ago instead of blowing 15 years ago out of the water.
Oh don't get me wrong I'm excited about those changes too. It always bugged me how I couldn't have more versatility from the starters. The game is as close to a perfect baseball sim as you can get. It just needs some tightening up in various areas, and I just wish a few more of them had been addressed. That's me being needy though. Still a day 1 purchase for me.

I'm hoping some of this gets taken care of with improved AI logic announced for 20, but my biggest pet peeves of 19, aside from the inability to easily research personnel:
Improved trade logic. Biggest issue here was how I almost had to ignore every trade proposal from the AI. Attempting to low ball from the start is one thing, but the degree to which they would low ball meant the proposal not even worth countering. I used to have some screen shots of some crazy instances where the AI would offer 1 or 2 low potential minor leaguers for a young mlb ready star. I remember even slightly adjusting Ronald Acunas stats as a Rookie (he went like .280 with 30 HR) and being offered 2 c level prospects for him. Just like there is a minimum threshhold for the AI accepting your own trade offers there should be a minimum relative value for what they offer. If the total value of what they ask for is 100 then their starting offer shouldn't be a value of 5.
Either a rework or different UI for free agency/draft. I always hated how after you get past the first tier or so in the draft you basically have no way of knowing who should be 5th round pick and who should be a 30th round pick because they are all 20/30. I like pouring over prospects and free agents, but I don't want to review over 500 of them at once. Might be a good place to implement some more effects around your scouting department. "These 500 guys might all be 20/20, but we rank this set of 30 slightly ahead of this next set and so on". Basically a scout recommendation but instead of just 1 player, show a pool of players.
Last kind of pet peeve is how the news system floods your inbox. I like knowing when a guy hits for the cycle or throws a perfect game. I don't need to know the 40 times per season a pitcher strikes out 10 or other more frequent headlines.

Sometimes they aren't always that terrible, but I agree that most of the time those offers are bad.
I look at them as more "expressions of interest" (i.e. they like Acuna and might want to trade for him) than the quality of that initial offer.
But it could be improved that's for sure.
The "would you like to trade for X" type emails fall in that same category, especially when it's a top level player/prospect. It's like "you know good and well you aren't trading him to me".

"These 500 guys might all be 20/20, but we rank this set of 30 slightly ahead of this next set and so on". Basically a scout recommendation but instead of just 1 player, show a pool of players.

At that point I stop using the scouting recommendation. Instead, I have my own rules/criteria. I use scouting recommendation in the mid-round (my draft is 35 rounds) and unless I really hate the pick (my own red flags or I think there's a much better choice), I'll "let her pick" the mid rounds (my scouting director is a woman in my head - a Japanese named "Yuki" just seems female and "Yuki" is a female name meaning "snow" so I go with it lol).
Using filters and custom views helps "enforce" my rules on the pool. Scouting money and ability comes in showing me accurately that they are all indeed moonshot projects, instead of one actually being 45/50/50/40/40 and maybe just a break or two away from bigger things and a possible late-round steal.
Same for FA's - scouting money is showing me more accurately (hopefully) what they are so when I do my thing on the pool, I'm doing so with (hopefully) accurate information.

Last kind of pet peeve is how the news system floods your inbox. I like knowing when a guy hits for the cycle or throws a perfect game. I don't need to know the 40 times per season a pitcher strikes out 10 or other more frequent headlines.

Yeah, another criteria would be nice. Maybe something "Accomplishments Notification" and then "only rare accomplishments" (like cycles, no-hitters, perfect games, 4 HR, etc) or "all accomplishments", which acts more like it does currently.
Most of what you guys are saying are things I'd like also. I'm not worried about getting extreme low ball offers as I consider it a starting point (albeit a poor one) or just something to laugh off. What I would like to see, in connection with trades, is when you set team needs that you actually get offered players they are willing to trade. I essentially don't input team needs because I feel it happens 3-4 times per week where they spam offer you an absolute stallion of a player only to in effect say "can't touch this." Offer me someone you can see a return package for...geez.
During the draft, I would like to be able to sort the scouting recommendation by fields like position, college/HS, certain player archetypes. Just giving me one choice (unless I spam the button a few times to get an alternative) seems too basic.
Would also like more check boxes with the news feed, so that maybe only extremely rare things show up.
Best time of the year! Spring in the air here in Missouri and another OOTP release on the way.
I've been playing since OOTP 2 many years ago and I'm in 2027 with my Cardinals playing v19. We have never been to the World Series, which is a first for me with OOTP so the AI has steadily improved over the years. I made the mistake of signing Harper years ago and it's killed my budget. :)

Just got mine. I've been itching to play Ootp again lately but haven't been able to get started on anything with 20 right around the corner.
Well I know what I'm doing when I get off work tonight

The new mocap 3D additions are great! Hard for me to finish up my last OOTP 19 season now. :)

I still haven't really seen any video of the 3D stuff...does anyone know if there's some out there yet?
Gonna use this beta version to fire up a present day Chicago Cubs save. Try to win some games and slash some payroll to appease virtual Tom Ricketts. My first move will be dumping Addison Russell like the real life Cubs should have done. I wonder if Javy Baez's ratings got some love...he was a bit under-powered in OOTP 19 (fair, he hadn't broken out yet).
Sorry, Theo. But it's time for you to step aside (not in real life).
Played a few hours last night.
loaded up a braves franchise with mostly default settings. Too early to give an accurate view but some initial thoughts are:
The ability to put starters in as a backup was immediately noticeable, and a very nice addition. I had fun putting a super utility guy like carmago in as starting SS while still having him as the primary backup at other positions.
I mostly simmed through about 60 games, but I did play through 5 or so. Some of the new fielding animations were nice to see when they happened but ultimately looked the same as last year
I was disappointed with some of the trade logic I experienced early on. I received an offer of an ok veteran reliever for 2 of my top prospects about 20 games into the season. On the plus side the ai recognized that bullpen was the weakest part of my organization. The unfortunate part was that their offer wasn't worth entertaining because I would have rebuild the trade from the ground up (why bother with ai generated offers if you have to go to that length). Hoping this was more of just a 1 off than a continuation of the norm.
Well those are my way too early impressions. From the website it sounds like most of the improvements this year are "under the hood" and they will take some time to appreciate.

I think that was actually by design. To me, I treat it as the AI starting it as "hey, we want this guy, we're willing to give up this guy, lets start the negotiation process started." Sort of like, a verbal trade agreement and just ironing out the details.

The problem is when the "we're willing to give up this guy" isn't remotely close to the caliber of player they are asking for. The onus falls on the player to completely recreate the trade in a manner that looks nothing like the original offer. Not only will the single guy they offered not be in the final transaction, but there will be multiple players all from a higher tier included before things get balanced. Those scenarios were too frequent in ootp 19, I'm holding out hope that 20 will be better.
I'm not saying it was all bad. There were definitely offers where a few details needed to be ironed out. Like maybe they want a 4 star guy and they are offering you some 3 star guy at a position of need in a 1:1 swap. Obviously that wouldn't work, but maybe you just need to add in another 3* guy to balance things out. Unfortunately I found instances like this to be relatively low when factoring in the bogus offers.

I’m going to try this out. I heard nothing but great things about this game. Do you need an high powered Mac to run this ?

Any Mac should be fine, what kind do you have?
I've never heard of this game. Who makes it? How does it compare to The Show?
I used to think the EA MVP Baseball game was the best then they stopped making it after the 2005 game. So now The Show to me is the best. I really like it but I'd be interested in this. Weird it's been around a while and I never heard of it.

Out Of The Park Baseball makes this game. They are based in Germany.
It's not the same type of joystick-style gameplay as The Show. This is more of a sports strategy simulation (OOTP's own definition). You can watch games play out with animations and you can also manage games and have influence on them, but you don't pick what pitch to throw or track baseballs and swing at them like you would in The Show. You might want to head over to YouTube to look at some gameplay if you want to know more.

Management/Text sim. You don't directly control the players, but as as of a few years ago they have at least had a graphical representation of players on the field, such that you can watch entire games play out (or just part of them). You also have in-game manager-type options if you're controlling the team, and those are pretty detailed and specific.
The bulk of the game is in its off-the-field, GM capacity. it is EXTREMELY deep. Way too much so to go into in an introductory post like this.
The studio is OOTPDevelopments, and it is apples and oranges to The Show (unless you only play The Show as a management sim).

Yeah, I quite like the graphics, but that's not what this game is known for. The Show blows it away if you're looking for something that looks more like the real thing on the field. If you're more interested in building teams and managing teams, then it's no contest the other way around.

Yeah unfortunately ootp isn't a live baseball sim. It's a very different style game, one which I enjoy, but there is no substitute for getting to play as you favorite players, locating the perfect pitch or getting a clutch hit at the plate. Those are the things that the Show does well, but it also fails miserably in all of the off-field aspects of running a franchise. I still miss getting to play live baseball in a video game, but I had to stop supporting SDS after '17 when it became clear they no longer wanted me as a consumer seeing as how franchise mode had been untouched for years. Ootp may not have amazing 3d graphics or give you the joystick control of a game like mvp or the show. But it still scratches the baseball itch, and no other game is in the same galaxy in offering the kind of depth, control and detail that makes being a virtual GM fun.

    Yep it's all about preference.
I bought a PS4 just for the Show. Loved the onfield experience, but off-field/roster construction was boring after a couple of offseasons.
That's the most important part of sports games for me.

The power of OOTP isn't in the animations or on-field gameplay. It's in the front office aspects of it. I wouldn't sell the game on anyone by talking about the graphics. But if you need that, this won't be the game for you.
If you want a deep franchise mode, you should get this game yesterday.

Regarding trade logic, did you try adjusting the favoring prospects option?

In ootp19 I tried a few different combination. I always did favor prospects, but I would adjust the weighting. I don't remember the exact weight I stuck with, it was one i found on the ootp forums. 55/30/15 is what sticks out to me but that may be wrong.

Yeah it's the one sport I prefer a deep, text simulation over a joystick. (although it's not just text anymore)

So far, I don't think the offers I'm getting are terrible (I'm in July so maybe they are better in hopes of enticing me to trade before the deadline), they just don't fit the fact I'm rebuilding. That's one spot it could get better. I set the team focus to Rebuild - don't offer me vets for prospects/younger players.
I don't set not interested unless of course I'm get spammed with offers for him, then I'll set it (and remind myself to remove it after the deadline) if only to maybe get other ideas from that GM.
My weight is like 65% ratings, and I'm thinking about 70-75% since I'd rather the other teams decide by ratings (and by proxy what their scouting is like), with production being a tie-breaker between two similar talents.
High stats just sounds like a recipe for the AI to get into trouble because a player had a good year or something. I think with how analytical the game is becoming at the front office level, high ratings weight is a better proxy (ratings = skills + projected output ...think ZIPS, PECOTA, MARCEL, etc.)
Now I don't know how much that translates to trades but I'm guess it might be more even on a ratings/ability standpoint since production won't make them try to lowball as much if the guy is struggling or you can't get a premium because he's had a good 250 ABs up to then, but obviously I don't know for certain.

It's about as far as arcade as you can get and the most in depth simulation of baseball ever.

I just don't prefer to Sim. I like to play the games. It just didn't appeal to me at all. I like baseball games but I don't play them near as much as I do Madden football.
Last BB game I got is The Show 2017. Had a couple of 2K BB games prior to that.

lets be honest, if you do not prefer a more texted based sim style game then OOTP is not really for you. dont force your self to like if its not your thing. games like these are not everyone's cup of tea.
