Novak Djokovic is chasing a record 11th title at the Australian Open. During a warm-up match against American player Frances Tiafoe, a heckler interrupted his game, but his sarcastic response won over the crowd. The incident happened when Djokovic was about to serve for the match.
According to The Daily Mail, a fan yelled out, “Let’s go Roger,” referring to his longtime rival Roger Federer. Djokovic stopped his serve, paused, and responded with a sarcastic laugh that made the entire stadium cheer and laugh. The distraction didn’t last long. Djokovic quickly finished the match after Tiafoe made an unforced error. He won 6-3, 6-4 in just over 80 minutes.
This was Djokovic’s only competitive match before the main tournament begins. He looked sharp and showed no signs of injury after pulling out of the Adelaide International recently. The 38-year-old covered the court with his usual speed, hitting 22 winners and making 17 unforced errors.
The Serbian star showed no signs of injury ahead of the tournament
Djokovic hasn’t played a tour-level match since beating Lorenzo Musetti in early November. Getting back into form successfully is a huge confidence boost for him going into the tournament. Like other athletes who embrace their legendary status, Djokovic continues to prove himself on the biggest stages.
Djokovic has had a complicated relationship with Australian audiences since 2020. The most significant clash came in 2022 when he was detained and deported from the country over his Covid vaccination status. He missed the Australian Open that year, even though he was the defending champion.
Even after receiving a visa waiver and returning in 2023, tensions remained. Boos and heckling have followed him around Melbourne Park at times. Despite all the controversies, Djokovic has remained dominant in Australia with a record 10 Australian Open titles. Now he’s chasing his 11th and a historic 25th Grand Slam singles title overall.
Even though younger players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are serious threats, the Australian Open and Wimbledon are seen as his best chances to win more titles. Athletes across all sports understand how precious their careers are, and Djokovic is no different. He recently shared what keeps him motivated.
“I’m trying to remind myself to not take any moment on the court for granted,” he said. “We are all battling ourselves first and then our opponent obviously on the court, but I’m just trying to remind myself of the joy I still have and a blessing to be able to play at this level at this age.”
