We don’t talk much about games like No Man’s Sky over here at Operation Sports, but the latest Xeno Arena update has sparked our interest. This new update to the game introduces a full turn-based creature-battling system to the game. You can explore the world to assemble your team of alien creatures and have them battle it out against other creatures in combat arenas.
I’m sure that capturing creatures and having them battle against others sounds familiar to a lot of you, and it’s hard not to draw the obvious comparison to Pokémon here. Here’s how the developers themselves describe the new update:
No Man’s Sky XENO ARENA introduces turn-based creature battles! Explore the universe to assemble a team of creature companions, perfect their genetic makeup, and test their mettle at simulated combat arenas. Discover hundreds of unique battle abilities, challenge new alien characters, share your strategies for daily challenges, and more.
An Unexpected Update
Nintendo has recently been busy with Mario Kart World updates, Pokémon Pokopia, and Pokémon Champions. Over the last couple of years, though, developers have been getting bolder in taking a few pages out of Nintendo’s book. Palworld is the most obvious example. However, while Xeno Arena definitely has Pokémon roots, it does fit and work with the vibe of No Man’s Sky.
Instead of feeling tacked on, the mode feels like a natural extension of the game’s core fantasy. No Man’s Sky has always been about discovery and building your own experience across a massive universe. Xeno Arena simply adds another layer to that discovery. You can find, genetically modify, and battle the creatures you encounter while exploring. The trailer showcases surprisingly deep turn-based combat, with plenty of unique abilities and team-building strategies for each Xeno.
What makes this update feel refreshing is that it doesn’t try to copy Pokémon’s formula beat for beat. It leans into No Man’s Sky’s procedural nature, letting you discover and craft creatures that feel truly unique to your save file. For a game that has already reinvented itself multiple times since launch, Xeno Arena is yet another example of Hello Games continuing to surprise players with free, substantial content years after release.
