NHL 20 Gameplay Features and Improvements - New Trailer and More Details

NHL 20 has revealed a brand-new trailer that showcases the next major innovations in Real Player Motion Technology-powered gameplay with Signature Shots, Goalie Threat Analysis and improved skating, that allows players to stay in control like never before.

NHL 20 builds on the cutting edge RPM tech that was introduced in NHL 19, delivering unprecedented improvements to how players interact with the puck to further increase the fluidity and authenticity of the game.

NHL 20 introduces Signature Shots, over 45 new contextual shot animations that make shooting more lifelike as players use new tools to get the puck on net. The games biggest NHL stars, including Auston Matthews, PK Subban and Nikita Kucherov now look and feel truly authentic with their trademark shooting-styles. In total, 18 players will have their signature shots included in the game. For more information, visit the NHL 20 RPM tech speed and shooting blog post.

New to the franchise, NHL 20 features Goalie Threat Analysis, adding over 450 new animations for netminders, giving goalies the tools they need to take control of the game. Goalies in position, and in control, will have the ability to take over the game with all-new controlled saves, redirects and a new suite of covers. 1. I like how the showed the comparison footage from NHL 19 to NHL 20. It was all much needed and looks great but I’m not convinced it means anything if the A.I. is still wandering idiots.
Looks improved.. but definitely want to see the AI players and how they play.
Also, when McDavid scored, I like the new overlay but I don't see a goal total.. hopefully they list that in franchise mode.
Cautiously Optimistic is how I would describe myself at this time. It looks good, but it always has. Hopefully the AI makes the game challenging without being frustrating.

Not going to lie. Looks a lot better than I thought it would for a trailer. I still want to see how they improved the franchise mode. Also, can we please play with a current NHL player for BAP mode like old-gen?
Need to see how AI CPU opponent and AI team players play like. Like PhillsPhan26 said I can't trust EA. I'm going to hold off until reviews are out and feedback is received from this community. First time in years I've held out on a pre-order.*
Also franshise mode needs a refresh and improvements with more features.. Want to see how it's done EA? Just look at 2K sports and how much they have done with their franchise mode in their basketball game.*
Peter_OS check out NHL 2k10's franchise mode and compare. It's insane that a game 9 years older has more features. I agree, Franchise mode has been weak for some time. Gameplay improvements are great, I just find myself losing interest pretty quick with the NHL series because the franchise mode is so weak.

Nice find. Agree with you. We need the BETA to release asap.
If Be a Pro doesn't get any substantial updates, FORMULA ONE will be eating its lunch.  That's how far it's fallen.
It's already been surpassed by the single player modes in MLB The Show, NBA 2K, and even other properties in EA Sports.
If I want a straight remake, I'll plunk down any sum Atlus wants for Persona 5 Royal.  EA Vancouver is on very, very thin ice with me.
LoadStar81, if you have a ps3 or x360 pickup NHL2k10 and compare the franchise modes. It's insane. Trade finder, full career stats, records, etc. It actually has depth and immersion. Found myself getting sucked into it. Gameplay is a little clunky at first. However you can run a proper power play where you feel the advantage. Flip side on the PK you feel a lot more desperate and try hard to keep positioning. I really am enjoying the hell out of it.
You guys need to stop thinking that AI is going to change. They dumbed it down intentionally last October in a tuner to make you work harder by switching players. It's a choice they made strategically, not a situation where it just needs a little tweaking or better programming. They can make them as smart as they want right now. They are choosing not to. If everyone played with locked positions maybe they would make a different decision, but that's not what they are catering to.
Its the annual "look how much better these animations are compared to our **** animations last year" video, 9 months after telling anyone that complained about those very animations that they were working perfectly and as intended and to essentially "git gud".
Seriously, they do this crap every year. There was like 50 page threads on ea forums with devs and people discussing animation and game mechanics where they literally defended the same puck pickups as realistic that they are now telling us were terrible. Its f'ing embarrassing(letterkenny anyone?).
Play a game of EASHL now as opposed to the month of June (Where they gave it out for free). It's nowhere playing the same. Better yet, compair to the demo where they were trying to sell it. A total 360.
If you change the overlays and the announcers would you not also show some of this to entice more buyers maybe like always they will release a little bit to increase the anticipation factor but I would really like to hear how this is going to sound in game

I personally dont understand why people get into the announcing packages and stuff, after a week it all sounds the same and gets annoying anyway but they said since the guys are local they will be making in season visits to EA Vancouver to add more commentary and kind of build a rapport and some chemistry so it sounds more natural.
Anything that makes the game play and look a little more like hockey and not a computer game is welcome. The new shots, the pickups and the new goalie moves nudge it in that direction. Keep it comin!
Watched the video again and really like what I’m seeing but I’ll say it again.....
If your A.I. teammates wander away from coverage from the slot like they always do.....
If your A.I. teammates collapse and bunch up together like the always do.....
If the CPU A.I. over passes rather than take the obvious proper shot.....
If the CPU runs its 4th line out with a minute left trailing by a goal......
If you can’t tell the difference between the 4th and the 1st line........
If the goalies drop to their knees way too soon on shots from the point and just kneel their motionless while the puck floats over their shoulder and into the net.....
If that ridiculous puck rebounding straight into the air and rolling down the goalies back into the net is still there.....
If CPU penalties are still broken....
If there is no roster share......
If EA is going to release a solid playing beta and initial release only to make it NHL 18 by the end of October.....
I’m sure I can go on....then looking really great and how much better they skate, shoot, turn, pick up pucks, and play rebounds in net will mean absolutely nothing.

It's pretty easy to cherry pick one frame and say 'it doesn't look good'.
Look at the below picture - can you see how context plays a big role?
Trailer looked great. One of my huge pet peeves has been shooting animations and how poor they look when a player isn't set-up perfectly.
I have given up expecting goalie animations to be excellent, I think we're stuck with these until next-gen. There has to be a reason they've never tried to really overhaul it. Maybe they have to get the AI right.
    Anyways, very excited.

I was replying to a previous post referring to CPU AI. I can go through the video and find 3 or 4 things I see that just don't seem right.

I'm fully aware of what you were replying to.
I'm pointing out that you're saying the 'A.I. doesn't look good' from a few simple frames.
I've given you a real life example of how you can pick a few frames which doesn't show the complete picture at all and say something like 'this doesn't look good'.
It shows a bias and I think maybe we should be a little more optimistic than that considering we know nothing of NHL20's a.i.

Look at the Montreal Player shooting the puck. Look at the angle of the blade, not way in the world if you shoot a puck like that will you get air born.... That's two things. I'll check again since I haven't watched it in a while.

They already said they did nothing to CPU AI.

Given this development teams track record can you possibly give anyone a single reason to be optimistic?

Yeah, as Jake said, you need to earn optimism from your consumer. Theyve shown nothing over the last 5-10 years to earn that optimism. There is zero reason to believe the AI is going to be good, especially when they said they didnt work on it at all.

I agree. That shot they keep showing by Tatar is really wonky. It doesn’t look natural. That being said, I think this video is overall a positive. The animations look great, I feel like they should’ve added this a while ago and add more animations every year but hey at least it’s a small step in the right direction. Finally the goalie animations are addressed!
I know a lot of people are bringing up AI and other things but I’m trying to focus my attention on what this video is about, animations. They did a great job. Now is this enough for me to buy the game this year? No it’s not but that’s a different discussion. These animations at least bring us a little closer to looking like actual hockey. Hopefully in the coming years they can do the same for passing, checking, net front play, and board play.

These animations do look great, and they have me excited for the future, but they mean nothing without a substantial improvement to the AI. If you're an online gamer, I'd be really excited, if you're offline this is a good edition but not enough to warrant a purchase at full price imo.
Hey, it looks like they are actually fixing a legacy issue this year. Shooting has been rough since last gen. Backhands, for example, have been 99% useless and much weaker than a real life backhand would be. Those NHL 20 backhands, however, look really nice. I've also always hated how the puck would just fly off the shooter's blade at 100+ mph when he barely moves his stick, like the puck is literally being shot from a loaded gun. Hope they fix that too. Let's see if they actually fix the goalies this year too. They always tout every two or three years that they have revamped the goalies in some way, yet they always feel exactly the same as they have since last gen, and in many cases much worse. Looking forward to the game, but I wish there was more to be excited for than just the shooting overhaul.
