Fans watching the play noticed what appeared to be a distinct lack of effort from the All-Pro defender at a crucial moment. Many observers, including some sports analysts, called out Jones for seemingly quitting on the play as the clock was winding down. During the game, Lawrence stumbled, then got back up to run into the endzone. Jones was visibly seen walking toward the play instead of hustling to make a stop. This questionable effort from a highly paid star immediately fueled speculation among fans online.

This perceived poor effort in a critical, game-deciding moment led to many conspiracy theories on social media. Many fans joked, and some seriously suggested that Jones allowed the touchdown. The game was also claimed to be rigged, and that Jones had financial motives related to sports betting.

Fans Pointed To Trevor Lawrence’s Game-Winning Touchdown As “Too Perfect”

Trevor Lawrence’s one-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter sparked the controversy. Lawrence initially stumbled badly after the snap, losing his footing and falling forward, which normally results in a tackle. However, he managed to get back up, break a tackle, and dive across the goal line for the score.

It was during the chaos of this strange play that the camera captured Chris Jones. Fans noted that Jones was standing or walking near the line, making little to no effort to pursue Lawrence. For many, the sight of one of the Chiefs’ top defensive players not hustling with the game on the line was an inexcusable moment.

Jones later addressed the play, stating he thought the defense had Lawrence wrapped up multiple times. He blamed the Chiefs’ failure to finish the tackle and called it a “fluke play” for Lawrence to escape. However, Jones’s explanation did little to satisfy frustrated fans who saw the bizarre nature of the play and Jones’s poor effort as a suspicious combination.

Conspiracy Theories About Jones And The Chiefs Spread Fast Online

The combination of Jones’s low effort and the weirdness of the touchdown quickly led to popular online conspiracy theories. One of them was that Jones had a parlay bet on a Trevor Lawrence rushing touchdown to win the game, suggesting a motive related to gambling.

Beyond the gambling theories, the moment also fed into the broader “NFL is scripted” narrative. Fans sarcastically commented that the play was too wild and perfectly timed for the Jaguars to win the game late, suggesting the outcome was predetermined by the league to create drama.

Even former NFL players and analysts weighed in, criticizing Jones’s visible lack of hustle on the play. Ex-All-Pro cornerback Aqib Talib notably questioned why Jones was standing and watching, suggesting that a great player like Aaron Donald “would never” show that lack of effort. The moment was truly controversial and will be remembered for quite some time.
