Is it good for consumers?

A potential new Xbox Game Pass tier has reportedly been discovered in Microsoft’s backend. This new tier could shake the entire Game Pass system.

The leak, first spotted by data miner redphx and reported by WindowsCentral, references a codename called Triton, which appears to be a new Game Pass tier focused exclusively on first-party Xbox titles.

According to the backend findings by rephyx, the new tier is solely dedicated to Xbox’s own titles. Titles listed in the leak include DOOM Eternal, Dishonored 2, Fable Anniversary, Fallout 4, Gears 5, Halo 5, Hellblade, and Ori and the Blind Forest, among others.

The fact that this tier only includes Xbox’s first-party games strongly suggests that this will be a lower-cost tier. Something for those who want to strictly play Xbox’s games. However, this tier could shake up the pricing. It’s probably going to be the cheapest tier, but it could lead to Xbox increasing the current tier prices to adjust this. For now, the only thing we know is that this new tier exists in the files.

A Cheaper, More Focused Game Pass Option?

If the “Triton” tier is real, it could represent a major strategic shift for Xbox Game Pass, which has traditionally leaned on a mix of first-party and third-party titles to drive value. Reports already indicate that Microsoft is trying to lower the prices for the Xbox Game Pass, especially after facing criticism from fans.

A first-party-only tier could be one solution. By limiting the catalog to Xbox-owned titles, Microsoft could save money on licensing costs. This would also align with ongoing discussions about introducing lower-priced or even ad-supported subscription models.

However, there are still plenty of unknowns. The leak does not include pricing details, release timing, or whether the tier would include day-one access to new first-party releases, which has long been one of Game Pass’ biggest selling points.

There’s also the question of how appealing this tier would be to players. To be fair, apart from some games or series like Forza or Fable, the Xbox’s first-party catalogue isn’t that appealing. So, for those who are looking for a more varied catalogue, this tier might not cut it.

For now, it’s important to note that “Triton” remains unconfirmed. Microsoft has not officially announced any new Game Pass tier, and backend discoveries don’t always translate into final products.
