NBA Live 18 Gameplay Video - 5 on 5 Gameplay (Warriors vs. Cavs, Drew League, The One)
MeriStation (audio is in Spanish) has posted some NBA Live 18 gameplay footage from EA Play. The 5 on 5 gameplay features the Golden St. Warriors vs. Cleveland Cavaliers, some action from The Drew League and The One from Venice Beach. Check it out and post your thoughts!

Is it me or does some of the animations looks awful and at times the movement isn't natural looking. It looks like LeBron doesn't have tattoos either which is a minus but I can't tell cause I'm watching it on my iPhone 6plus but can someone confirm? I haven't played the game yet but from what I'm seeing animations wise I'm not impressed. I might have to skip live. One thing I will say is the graphics looks good.

I hate that once again the teams are controlled by what I assume are aliens to this planet that never watched an NBA game but still a lot of nice animations and movements shown.
Really liked that Curry move to the basket at 1:50

The shot clock at 22 seconds into the video and again every other time resets to 24 seconds after the ball hits the rim. That's good but it's already counting down before the defensive player grabs the board. By the time the player has possession, he's playing with 21, 22 seconds of clock instead of a full 24.

I don't like a few of the passes and some of the movement looked off when going from standing to moving. Overall though looks solid and fun. Can't wait to play it.

-Players look stiff on some animations .
+But the graphics are almost lifelike . I hope it'll be in 4k on my PS4 pro.
+ liking the layup animations and contact animations .
Overall it looked really good. Surely they can iron some of that stuff out before release .

Agreed on the passing. Some of it looks off. The user also does not play like basketball is his game of choice if you know what I mean.

I was more focusing on what he was saying about the game but it looked decent enough to me.

I shouldn't have to try to make the game look like a decent game of basketball.
Looks fine to me though. I'd play it. Quirky animations and whatnot.
Like what I see for the most part. Like it's been said by people above me, the passing needs more work. Every pass looks like the player is trying to damage his teammates shoulder, finger and/or wrist.
Graphics look really really good.
They have me in preorder mode for now.

I'm assuming we will get to see signature stuff like this with Melo wrapping his arm around the defender from the post? It's a stretch but would be cool since I'm already seeing so many nuances from other players, though that could be me looking deeper into things that aren't really there.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk
Don't think I saw any fast breaks in this though. And why was Zaza getting back so fast ? That's a huge negative.
EA please look at fast breaks , transition defense , and passing before August.
Gameplay is almost catching up with the graphics...almost.

That's looking extremely deep I'd say lol.
But hey, if that kinda stuff is included it would be amazing.
I too noticed Zaza (lol) fighting to get deeper in then going hook. That and the Curry layup were both pretty detailed & amazing looking.

1. Unbelievable improvement in animations. A lot of subtle animations in the game on every play that really brings in the immersion such as Kyrie bringing the ball up and instinctively putting his arm out and doing a slight push off in the semi transition of an approaching defender. looked just like something he would do.
2. The graphics looked phenomenal, especially that venice beach court was just popping with character and the players looked spot on. Though the graphics have been good in the past, awkward animations really detracted from their effect. In these clips they suddenly really stand out as the game seems to flow much more like the real game.
3. That 2k type baseline camera at venice beach was fantastic. Very good balance of being close enough to the action to see the detail but also allowing the user full vision over the court. My default setting for sure.
4. Improved paint play. As great as other aspects I mentioned were, this is where it shined the most. In past games the paint play, such as finishing at the rim, or defending the drive at the rim just looked and played atrocious. Here, it was where the game was most beautiful. That one hand scoop by steph and that defensive stop by Green where he bodied, blocked, and took the ball away were just stunning moments.
5. Now for the cons. Passing was not as bad as the other commenters are making it seem. Some of them say it was too floaty, others say they were like bullets so I don't really know where the consensus will stay. But for me the user was just throwing some VERY dumb passes so that added a bit of an eyesore. I thought the passing seemed much more crisp than the other game though that is a weak aspect for them. I don't know the AI setting, but some of those passes should have been at least deflected, but there did not seem to be an awareness of them. We will have to watch how that develops and if it is problematic.
Some of the change of speed animations from a jog to a skip or walk were really well done but it did look awkward at times when players changed from a standstill/walk to a sprint with turbo or turboing in opposite directions. Now a lot of that awkwardness is probably on an inexperienced user not knowing how to set up off the dribble or speed up at the proper times and angles. I am sure it will look a thousand times better with me on the stick, but still it would be nice to see those smoothed out as they will be seen frequently.
All and all, it exceeded my expectations and that is without showcasing the aspect I am looking forward to the most, the ball handling and 1 on 1 battles. Or how those interact and are influenced by the screen. It is looking like this is my Ball game of choice this fall.
I came away pretty impressed. But again, this is coming from the perspective of someone who was anticipating complete disappointment.
There are still quite a few wonky animations, but I would like to think they are working on adding more daily. But man, there are a lot of beautiful things happening here. Some of the rebounding animations, the Curry layup. Some of the jump shots look really fluid and life like and I am enjoying the graphical fidelity of the players on the court. Arenas look crazy good too.
There still needs to be some tuning on the speed of certain animations. There was a little uptick in the animation speed when passing on the move. But then again, there was also some really good moving pass animations as well. So it seems that some of them may be leftovers from Live 16? Ball is also still a little floaty when passing around the perimeter. Hoping this can be tuned before August.
Still watching so I will probably pick up more, but man, what a turn around.
EDIT - Curry jumper at 2:40 had a weird speed to it, like it was slowed down at the beginning, then sped up at the end.
And this is splitting hairs, but still really hate the net physics. Seems so stiff. Like when Curry swishes it at 2:40 the net barely moves.
Can't take a game seriously as far as playing competitively with that type of defense.
On the plus side I did see some things I like as far as more contact around the rim

Yes I agree but, thats exactly the same as in the other game though.
I like that camera angle a lot, whatever it is...I've been begging Live to show off their graphics by giving us a closer broadcast court view...looks like they'be done that. I can identify everyone right off the bat.

Yeah funky animations
Some still exist from old lives
Coll animations they have some in there
Funky jumpers definitely in there
Net physics i mentioned that to them as one of peoples big complaints. They said they're looking at it and anything with physics but i walked away with no guarantees

They run more upright now

Also, they're removing animations hourly, but with all of the code in there, it's going to take a while to find and remove replace the legacy ones.
The tipping of passing and awareness I've run into the ground.
The contact and physicality is something to see and experience. There's some really nasty stuff that can happen.

Might have. Mentioned the dribble moves and how/when they do it and how it was implemented.
I mentioned how some of those jump shots were not authentic signature shots that needed looked at.
Come to think of it they mentioned like john walls personal sig moves for example and the spin layup which looked nice in game....do you mean that?
Because we talked about that and kyries in particular.
For a sec i thought he was about to tell me they had packages

One thing I do think they already do better than 2K just from looking at that short video is the depth of the court seems much more realistic. In 2k the court has never seemed wide enough. Live 18 seems to do a better job at this.
Also I like the offball defenders are proactive in putting themselves in better position to help as the ball moves both towards them and away from them. The possession starting at 1:40 shows this. You can see people step away and step towards their assignment according to where the ball is. I even like how the offball arent just facing the opposite baseline the entire time as they do in 2k. Curry got that drive at 1:56 because Lebron couldnt help off KD. Loved it.
A couple things that need to be improved however: at 1:54 Kyrie is at the elbow while guarding Steph. I think i see him trying to close the distance between he and steph as ZaZa receives the pass from Dray but that needs to happen quicker as we all know Steph would have taken that 3 point shot in real life.
At 1:02 i dont like how J.R. gets back doored even though he is already standing at the block. That pass at the very least should have been deflected.
Overall it wasnt terrible and was actually decent. The foundation seems to be there. Will be able to find the bugs once we get the demo however.
Zaza and Green steeping over to take charges on penetration was good to see.
If you throw passes across court the defense will pick it off. That was a nice touch

In Live 16 curry and pretty much any player would never pick up their dribble if they banged into someone and could push their way to post for easy buckets.
INITIMIDATOR
God I have been asking for my rim protector for the other game to be a intimidator and EA got it in there game! I like what I'm seeing. It's a bit on the slow side and some of the shots looks like their floating.....other than that I really like it.

I have to say it looks impressive. Animations are light years better. And saw a bunch of new contextual animations which were sorely needed.
Great work EA. It looks like they actually resurrected a game from the dead.
Yeah.
Also You still don't have to push a button to jump during the jumpball.
From the video
GOOD
Some of the animations looked beautiful. The rebounding and the Curry move. And that Green block.
Were those charges being drawn on drives???? A few plays show that barrelling into the paint is not a viable strategy.
BAD
I think they stole the jump baseball pitch rocket pass from 2K8.
Nothing resembling an actual offense. This was user vs user (I think?) so Im keen to see how the CPU plays.
Defenders have no idea passes are being thrown.
Do you find the CPU does a good job of running offenses and plays?
Maybe WTF is allowed to confirm, but I'm guessing if you hit green and you're wide open it'll say 'great shot' and usually go in but it won't be automatic. If it's green and it's guarded you've got a good chance but not 100% again
And I'm also guessing you can shoot at any point of the meter like in 16
Just a guess but i'm feeling confident on that :y220e:
They're overhauling plays. Most aren't in as of yet. Most of what you see are placeholders or carryover from a few years ago.
From the video
It's still a lot of funky Live stuff in the game.
It's some good animations in there too. Once you get past the initial excitement you'll start seeing stuff from the past.
I don't know how much they'll clean up but they got plenty of feedback.
One of the devs played made it look pretty smooth because he knew how to dribble, calls plays and get around his man.
They are way far behind 2k on sig stuff, whether its celebrations, packages or dribble moves in general.
You can do some cool dribble stuff though and have fun.
I think the game will be playable so basically if you like live already you'll love it anyway.
The people that don't they will have some work to convince them. Their trailers are trash for starters.

Positives
+ Collisions and contact in general were nice to look at
+ 1 on 1 situations looks improved
+ Animations have improved a lot
+ Shot Variations
+ Missed Layups through contact (Paul George)
+ Dribbling looks solid
+ Post Game
+ Graphics (Stadium, Players and Atmosphere)
Negatives
- There are still some funky looking animations, but it's not as glaring as the previous NBA Live games
- The ball floats a lot, but that can be patched
- Facial Expressions when players are shooting, dunking and performing layups can be worked on a little more (Deandre Jordan expression was very underwhelming)
- Passing needs to be worked on further
- Warped shots (James Harden shooting from the left side for 3)
- The fluidity of SOME jump shots can be improved further
Overall
Like I said before, the positives outweighed the negatives. Most of the negative stuff can and should be patched on Day 1 or future updates, but I can only hope. I can finally say that NBA Live is making a strong return back to basketball. I just hope the people in charge are patient as they move forward with the franchise. I'm tired of delays and EA hitting the reset button.

I would like to be cautiously optimistic but I think I'll have to stay skeptically optimistic.
Do you know how close up until release will the dev team be updating the game and adding content?
Plays, animations, faces etc.
Online actually works great and this is coming from an offline only player.
Live 16 as of today is now a decent game that has some resemblance of NBA schemes and plays. Looks like they build on top of what they had.

Good to hear. Hoping they will able to continue to add/replace animations and tune animation speed until launch. Have noticed that on contested jumpers, the animation speed will for some reason speed up abnormally. This looks really awkward and needs to be fixed immediately. Hoping they also tune passing mechanics.
Granted the game should look good no matter who is playing it, but the guy playing was terrible and button mashing at one stage so I'd imagine it looks a whole hell of a lot better in the hands of someone who knows how to play.
Do we know what build of the game the demo in August will be?
And please, tell them make the net less taut.
I really encourage people to download NBA Live 16 and look how far it has come.
animations, i must say look much improved, though still behind 2K17's, from the limited clips we've been privy to. hope more improvements will be made, and the gameplay and AI will be more up to par...
must say, better Live quality = more pressure for 2K to step up
busy at work but here is what I remember
Multiple character saves
Have to unlock certain secondary skills
Manual Passes
Green light / Perfect releases automatic
No allstar weekend
Different tier of crates for unlocking things
No and yes.
Also, the different ways to pass help time down the floaty passes tremendously.
Still, the floaty passes are killing me, along with the fact that the defense seems completely unaware of cross court passes. (Don't know what difficulty this is on, so we'll see)
Also, to me, the spacing has taken a step back. Live used to be universally praised for it's spacing, but I saw a bunch of instances where players got clumped all in the same area.
Sometimes, when players are dribbling and moving, it looks like they're floating and skating on air. Very rarely did I see this, but it stuck out like a sore thumb.
Shooting mechanics can hopefully be tweaked as well. There's a bit of a hitch and pause in some of the jumpshots I saw.
There's a ton of promise being shown here, though. FG% looks to be tweaked heavily from 16, and the layup animations are incredibly improved. Dunks and net physics can still be polished, though.
This is what i feel 16 should have been, with 18 making a more significant leap. However, I feel like 18 is a very solid step in the right direction for the franchise. They need to build on this.
I will probably play the demo and get a feel for it, but as far as a purchase goes, they'll have to REALLY impress me to spend another $60 on a 2nd basketball game this year.
Kudos, Live. You might be on your way back to what we once knew and loved.

and is it better than 2k... nah fam, they're still behind. That game just has too many things in it, however
this game still doesn't seem universally accepted by people who don't like the game so EA has so much work to do its not funny.
this game still doesn't seem universally accepted by people who don't like the game so EA has so much work to do its not funny.
I don't think it necessarily has to be better. It just has to be different and a breathe of fresh air. Some might admit 2k is the superior game but enjoy both just as a change of pace. It's good to see Live back in a playable state.
It doesn't have to be different only, its always been different. It needs to be on par with the standards to actually mean something to gamers besides their little cult crew.
Sports gaming is already the stepchild genre, so there is little room for excuses when charging people $60.
I already said it was better than 16.
You can dismiss animations all you want to.
There is a reason they're adding more of them.
Couple that with the fact that I wasn't talking about animations in general, 8500 copies sold at release trashes your little snarky comment.
Its mind states like this that EA needs to drop with a 10-foot pole if they ever plan on being successful.
There are always people who can't see the forest for the trees.

Everyone has already said what I want to say about the passing. IMO Its just bad and unrealistic in Live. The same passing animation is used too much.
Why does curry look like he is throwing a bullet pass when Zaza is so close.
Look at his arm almost around fling around his head. Zaza makes the exact same pass in an entirely different situation (Moving vs Standing).
With no proper footplanting, Zaza clearly travels after receiving the ball and passing it back
Passing with no penalty? Just floating the ball around
I haven't even got into the overall weird movement from the players. Still going to try the demo but man im not impressed.
I haven't even got into the overall weird movement from the players. Still going to try the demo but man im not impressed.
This is my #1 issue and from what I've seen online, it seems to be the main reason people aren't sold by the game.
I loved Pro-am/Park mode in Live 16. I got like 10 games in about the time it would have taken to get 1 or 2 games in 2k17 park.
I also got on the leaderboard for pro-am... which is impossible to do in 2k unless you play 24/7.
NBA Live's game design is blowing 2k out of the water, but the animations are so subpar that it doesn't matter. EA please just hire someone to fix the stiff animations and you might actually compete with 2k again.
That ultimately lies with the devs and quality of the game. People are interested in Live. Look how much the board has lit up. However, people aren't going to blindly support a product when there's a better more fleshed out NBA sim on the market. Even without an alternative the game just hasn't been good. There are people who prefer Lives gameplay and that's cool but thy aren't enough. If the game is good then people will support it. If not, it'll be the same handful of people here and the board will be a ghost town again.
EA sports are no longer a viable threat? I mean if you consider because they dominate the sports game market already lol. Your post makes no sense, the majority flock to their games year after year with the exception of Live so they must be doing something right. I am frustrated with their sports games at times as well but as soon as I put in 2k or PES there are another whole set of issues easily just as problematic in their own ways. This is just a hating comment in response to positive feedback.
I won't speak for the whole division but in general, I'd agree with you.
However, you are looking at the thoughts and feelings of a lot of people out there that feel that way and it was created by EA themselves in regards to NBA Live.
This has nothing to do with 2k, especially when compared to all games as a whole...just games.
NBA Live is lacking TREMENDOUSLY and have a huge hill to climb. The question is how do you stop the majority of people from feeling like the above?
That's what ultimately matters. None of the comparisons and all of that.
Also they've had a hand in gimping that kind of experience as well... with plenty of things mentioned here over the years..but I do think there is some fun to be had here if you like the series.
As far as gameplay looks, changing a few animations, adding some new ones, taking out some old ones, and change the floaty passes. If they do that, maybe fix a little stiffness, the gameplay would be the best of the best. All of the things I mentioned above can be patched. Even roster editing is at least on the radar. Things are very optimistic and haven't been on here in a very very long time.
2K is way behind in certain areas as well. People say Live chased a cash cow but a 57 rated start to my career? Forced story line? Orange juice? Forced cut scenes? Lack of control. Stuck in animations, super slow mo basketball at times (to keep animations looking pretty). Live for the most part is showing they are fixing a lot of things people don't like.
No doubt 2k is still 9/10. Live looks like it may approach 8/10. But we are excited for something fresh. And that 8/10 may help us avoid those problems we hated dealing with in 2k.
So if I can save $20 compared to having to buy $20 of VC just to get a 70 rated player, I will enjoy myLive "mycareer" so much more. There are a lot of small problems that make 2k difficult for me to play.
All this to say there is a reason for optimism. It's not a bunch of "blind Live fans". Live 14 sucked, 15, and 16 with little to no progress. We held them accountable, and minus roster editing and some Nonie things (all which can be patched in day one or later) the game looks great overall and it's refreshing to us. Nothing wrong with that.
I preordered every 2k and loved them overall. Preordered Live 14, hated and sold it. Live. 15, bought later and hated it. Still bought 16 on black Friday and eventually hated it.
Live 18 has convinced me not only to buy but to not buy 2k this year. They she doing something right. (I compare because, I, like many, will only buy one basketball game. For many it is a competition, which is perfectly fine)
Live looks like it may approach 8/10. But we are excited for something fresh. And that 8/10 may help us avoid those problems we hated dealing with in 2k.
i will save this quote for later
I didn't like the Kevin Love double team, what was he doing? Didn't like Zaza Pachullia scoring from the post, passing animations look weird, & players look weird when getting up off the floor, they get up like The Undertaker.

LOL man I noticed that too. The ball is flying everywhere without any resistance. They have to address that lol. Otherwise it's not basketball, something else.
Also did you notice how long does it take for Curry to release his shots ??? He releases his shot in mili seconds in real life. That should be adressed too
It was posted somewhere on the 2K subreddit.
There's at least one clue that adds up to current screenshots which are legitimate. There's a Drew League screenshot that shows the same white Xbox 360 style controller icon for multiplayer indication.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B54INUZNqCs
Could be coincidence, as far as I recall NBA 2K17 doesn't currently use any controller icon for multiplayer indication in any game mode. So unless NBA 2K18 happens to use the same exact icon I'd say it's a clue.

Well, I'm sorry... that's how nba live animates.

What does that mean though?
The way Love animates is one of their biggest problems.
And you know what they end up being sorry for it later on.

It means same old engine with same old legacy animations.

Dont get me wrong im not bashing the game and had fun with my short time with it but i dont understand the defense of things that are just in need of correction period.
Its cool to like something but you can be honest too.

Any word on a like button fix for the app? It's needed for posts like this lol
But yeah, nothing wrong with addressing things that need to be improved

For people like yourself a lot of them won't like how the game animates, which leave it up to preference for every basketball fan you have 2 game to choose from. You have gave your impression from your eaplay visit you said they made improvements but you still don't seem sold on the game. As for me that have bought both games every year since 2014 I see the improvements and like what I've heard, I'm not saying yes EA you get a pass for not adding roster editing, yes EA you get a pass for a couple hard to look over animations not say that at all, but even tho your not bashing the game it's seems like you want people to be on your side saying well I saw some bad animations let's not get the game, but from what I'm hearing the game as improved and they still have a couple more months to make improvements and can still change some stuff after the game as been shipped. At the end of the day it's all down to PREFERENCE.

Dude, I was totally wondering if it was just me -- I thought I had broken my app or something. My like button is gone and it's annoying.

Preference, that is basically what it boils down to. We should all come to the conclusion that nba live will always animate like this until they change whatever is they use for player movement in the game. So if you can't get pass the jerky, stiff, robotic movements, just play the other game. That's why it's good to have two. Preference.

But Live has some ugly animations and that's me also liking the video and seeing the improvement. It still needs work to get me pushing people to buy it.
I'm in. Don't get me wrong. I'm all in. But I'm not surprised others aren't.

Man I hope you're trolling talking about im looking for people to be on my side.
I am first and foremost not anti consumer and I also don't cosign something that's garbage.
Compare this to any other videogame in the industry and it makes no sense what you're saying.
I plan on getting the game, im just not sold on full price.
Instead of trying to filter out my motives you should want the game to be better to avoid more 8-10K sales numbers.
I've been around this series for a mighty long time and im not about to let some 25 year old nostalgia cloud my judgment.
Some of you dudes are just not honest and that's really what it is.
What i'd prefer is to have 5 basketball games again but this has nothing to do with that. This has everything to do with this game not lasting as long as the same complaints remain.
Its ridiculous how people defend anything at all just because they like it. I don't even want to get started on this because like a few others ive been more involved in the past than you probably ever will be and saw more nonsense happen than you'll ever know.

28 actually lol, I wasn't defending the game it as its fault just like every other game. I can point things out that was wrong with 16 I can't say nothing about 18 cause I haven't played it.
I wasn't coming at you, that's just how your approach came off to me. I can't make videos game or know how they animate all I can do is appreciate and applaud what is being done.
And I'm pretty sure you've been around and been involved more than I am and will ever be. Wasn't trying to get involved in anything just here to read and share my thoughts which I only do on rare occasions.

and again, I don't need you to try to weigh my approach. I did play but that wasn't even the point.
Anyone making excuses for stuff in the game that needs to be fixed ASAP is not a real fan of seeing this series succeed, and it makes me wonder if they actually play games in general.
....because in no way can you watch smooth animations at both 60 and 30fps in multiple genres and feel as though this is okay, even with it causing cacellations, delays and low sales points.
Individual preferences mean little to nothing when the majority of what they need are shunning the product itself.
I've been a OS member since the 90's. I'm very disappointed in you guys. . .

We don't buy this game cause nostalgia but the hate seems to be nostalgia based.. going forward with all the inprovents to movement and animations we've heard Live fans/ mods should not longer accept animations suck from the haters.
Post a vid and make your claim with the final build. Rag on the product/developers whatever. But this whole Live fans are the problem or I'm better cause I only care about this game from afar is bull ****.

You literally have someone saying crappy animations, robotic, stiff, non human looking player movements is a preference and if you don't like it buy the other game cause that's just how Live animates. People are literally saying they know there is no roster editing in this game for the 9th consecutive year but they're buying it anyway to 'support competition.' Not sure what forum you're reading but there is definitely defending here.

23's criticism of the game may be tough to hear, but these are legacy issues and there are things that need to be addressed as a whole. We will see what the game has to offer upon release, but don't beat the guy down for well deserved criticism. That's his honest opinion and it's not bashing if it is true. We all need to chill out and wait for the demo.

The criticism is welcomed, but those legacy issues will always be there until ea sports scrapped what ever they use for player movement. As of now, all they can do is clean it up the best way they can. But the legacy issues are not leaving. They will continue to pop up.

My biggest issue at this point is the passing. It looked really bad. I am hoping they tune it, but might not be something they can do this late.
I'm not going on any nostalgia, I'm not a Live honk, I haven't enjoyed or even played the game more than a few times since Live 10. I thought 16 was an OK game, but I am excited for the demo of 18 and will decide from there.
Can you give us a hint of when we see game play this week? I'm getting impatient haha.
Me too. It's gone.

I wasn't even criticizing the game though. When or if I do, you'd definitely know.
I pretty much stay away from that in here by choice most of the time.
Also im looking forward to the demo.
Dont believe everything WTF says, he usually knows jack ****
:y220e: you caught me.
Today at noon.
Also, just because I don't respond doesn't mean I don't know, it just means I'm not at liberty to talk about it yet. But if you don't want to believe that, it's understandable as I don't know Jack ****. :y13:
I think noon US ish time. so around 17-21 here i think. I hope It's noon WTFs' timezone. that'll be around 17-18 here in Denmark.
