Kevin Cruz is one of my favorite creators for NBA 2K as he’s a good mix of comp and sim. He’s aware of the comp scene but also clearly loves the NBA and tries to bring some of those “real” elements to a lot of his tutorials. With NBA 2K24 kicking off in early access this week, Cruz is ready to rock with a video showcasing the new breakdown dribbles that he believes will be quite strong in NBA 2K24.
The video is very straightforward, and for NBA 2K veterans it will probably even feel quite familiar because it’s based around starting most sequences by either flicking the RS up or holding turbo and flicking the RS up. Through the years, flicking the RS up or quickly tapping and releasing the turbo button has been a known way to get a signature size-up of sorts through the various eras of 2K. You see a lot of the coolest signature dribble animations through this basic method, and so it’s back this year in a new form.
With that in mind, a lot of the same concepts work here where you’re reading and reacting to your defender in order to find space after the initial setup. One of the new tweaks is there does seem to be some taunting elements to at least Jordan Poole’s dribbles. It’s kind of funny to see, and I wonder how many other taunts are mixed in with the dribbles here.
The bottom line here is watch the video if for no other reason than to just see how smooth some of the new dribbles look. Year to year it can be hard to gauge how breaking down defenders will go as based on what modes you play (and what difficulty you play on) it can either be quite challenging or quite easy to win in isolation. We’ll have to see where NBA 2K24 lands, but we should know soon enough as 2K season is upon us.
