NBA 2K23: Experience the Jordan Challenge

Pioneered in NBA 2K11, The Jordan Challenge was a groundbreaking sports game mode that allowed for NBA fans to relive their favorite and most memorable moments from Michael Jordan’s storied career. It’s been over a decade since then and we felt that now is the perfect time to retell Jordan’s ascension from college standout to NBA legend in NBA 2K23 on both New Gen and Current Gen.

One of the core differences between our audience in 2K11 and 2K23 is that many of our players in the latter never got the experience of watching Michael Jordan play in-person or live on television. Everything they know about the player is from short clips, YouTube videos, and/or tales from family members who saw a man win six NBA Championships in a single decade. In NBA 2K23’s Jordan Challenge, fans from any generation will be able to enjoy the definitive retelling of Michael Jordan’s career through our completely immersive narrative experience.

NBA 2K23 Jordan Challenge

Highlights

In NBA 2K23, The Jordan Challenge consists of 15 unique game experiences beginning from Jordan’s humble beginnings at the University of North Carolina and culminating with the final shot he ever took for the Chicago Bulls, one that elevated him to a six-time NBA Champion. The complete presentational package is richer than anything we have ever put together, allowing for each game to look, feel, and sound like it’s being played in the actual year it is taking place in. In this mode, you will experience:

An intricately designed video filter system that aims to re-create the television experience of watching these games as they were originally broadcast during the 1980s and 1990s, with each decade getting its own unique viewing experience.

  • Era-specific broadcast elements that truly capture the technology at the time of each played game. In 1982, you will experience a broadcast that is simple in design and nature. Big block letters, not many graphics. As we progress into the 90s, you will start to see an evolved presentation as technology was improving in leaps and bounds. Seeing is believing on this front, and wait until you see it…
  • A broadcast experience that dives deep into the mood and setting of every game to truly deliver a world-class experience. To make the commentary believable, you need the talent of someone who was there, who lived the entire Jordan experience from every perspective. Joining the commentary team for the Jordan Challenge in NBA 2K23 will be legendary coach and analyst Mike Fratello, aka The Czar. Fratello brings a one-of-a-kind level of authenticity to the games with his keen insight and unique stories that shine a bright light on our commitment to making these games look and feel…just right.
  • From North Carolina…At Guard…6’6…MICHAEL JORDANNNNNN! We’ve all seen the iconic Bulls starting lineup introductions featuring the iconic voice of Ray Clay. In order to capture and re-create that chill-inducing moment, we went out and captured a full PA announcer set from Ray Clay to include as the official Bulls PA announcer during those 90s games when he was broadcasting on television sets around the entire world. No 90s Bulls starting lineup experience would be complete without ‘Sirius’ by the Alan Parsons Project playing through the in-stadium speakers as each starter is announced. We left no stone unturned to deliver a completely authentic experience for all of you!
  • Each of the 15 Jordan Challenge games feature a pre-game interview with a luminary that was a part of what made each and every game special. Who better to tell the story of Michael Jordan than teammates, coaches, and those who commentated his games? During your experience, you will be regaled by the likes of Marv Albert (courtside commentator for The Shrug game), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (opponent in 1988 All-Star game in Chicago), Dennis Rodman (opponent in the Bad Boys game), Phil Jackson (head coach in The Last Dance game), and many more. We think you will find this touch to be the icing on the cake of a truly remarkable and memorable narrative experience.
  • Challenges! Each of the 15 challenges offers three goals for you to hit. Completing a goal earns you a Star. Collect 40 Stars and you will unlock unique rewards for both MyTEAM and MyCAREER mode. If you want to roll through The City and The Neighborhood in a Jordan UNC jersey, there will only be one place to get it…

Our ‘kitchen sink’ approach of including EVERYTHING we could think of doesn’t stop with the above. What good is the above if the on-court experience doesn’t live up to how the sport was played during this era? Let’s dig in to those details…

NBA 2K23 Jordan Challenge

Gameplay Authenticity

The game of basketball has changed so much over the course of the last 40 years. Enhancing our on-court experience to support the Jordan Challenge was a major priority for the team this year. The Jordan Challenge is not just the same modern-day gameplay with classic teams and uniforms. We scouted, studied, and made key gameplay changes to fit the feel of each era to make each game feel like time traveling through NBA history.

For starters, the game was much slower paced in Jordan’s day. In the ‘80s-era games, you will notice a much heavier focus on the post and mid-range game. This is supported through slider settings, AI, tendencies, and playbooks custom to the era. We also rewrote our transition game for the 1980s. It features tighter transition lanes and more players cutting to the basket with a numbers advantage, as opposed to the spotting up for three you see in today’s NBA.

You can run sets from some of the greatest coaching minds in NBA history: Jack Ramsey, Hubie Brown, Dick Motta, Lenny Wilkins, Phil Jackson, Jerry Sloan, Rick Adelman and more. On the defensive end, we’ve rewritten our matchup logic so that when Jordan plays against Dominique Wilkins, they’ll match up and try to outscore each other in the Shootout challenge. In other games, you’ll see more complex cross matches. When you play as Jordan against the Cavaliers, Winston Bennet guards Jordan, Jordan takes Craig Ehlo, Ehlo guards Scottie Pippen, and Pippen guards Bennet. If you are able to score well at a high enough efficiency, Ehlo will eventually take over defensive responsibilities for Jordan.

Basketball in the 1980s and 1990s was much more physical than present day; this is accurately modeled in our floor game and in the paint. Hand-checking and hard-hitting body-ups bring a completely different feel to the one-on-one battles compared to the more free-flowing game of today. We also made sure that all the rules (like illegal defense) are accurately represented properly for each particular game. Playing with Jordan against the ‘Bad Boy’ Pistons is probably the most obvious example of where you see the grit and physicality of old school basketball. The Pistons will employ their famous ‘Jordan Rules,’ a set of defensive strategies they used to try and contain MJ.

On the signature style front, you’ll see our biggest upgrade yet. Magic Johnson has his signature no-look passes, and a number of classic greats have all-new jump shot, layup, and dunk packages. We also made every effort to ensure that our dribble move set and finishing moves were era-appropriate. This means moves like the “shammgod” crossover and euro-step layups won’t be firing off in Jordan Challenge games. And of course, the Jordan Challenge wouldn’t be complete without capturing some of the big moments that everyone remembers: Jordan’s famous shrug against Portland, the 1997 Finals flu game, The Shot over Ehlo, and Jordan’s famous game-winner over Bryon Russell to seal his final championship. These are just some of the memories that have been accurately recreated in NBA 2K23.

We paid attention to every possible detail creating the Jordan Challenge, and then some. The end result is a breathtaking recreation of a bygone era that we know you will enjoy! Below, you’ll find a detailed glimpse at each challenge and the history behind the moment.

NBA 2K23 Jordan Challenge

The Jordan Challenges

1. 1982 National Championship: University of North Carolina vs. Georgetown

The 1982 National Championship featured future Hall of Famers, legendary matchups, and the first glimpse of Michael Jordan’s clutch gene. Down 62-61 with less than 20 seconds to play, MJ, a first-year Tar Heel, clinched the title with a go-ahead jump shot with 15 seconds left in regulation. Many players, not just freshmen, would’ve folded under the bright lights and intensity of a national championship, but not No. 23. Experience Jordan’s first iconic shot by recreating the magic of the 1982 National Championship.

2. 1984 Team USA Basketball Scrimmage

67,596 fans descended upon the Hoosier Dome in 1984 to witness a clash between NBA giants, as the USA Olympic Team, led by Michael Jordan, went toe-to-toe with Magic Johnson and the NBA All-Stars. In a game featuring NBA legends like Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Isiah Thomas, and more, Jordan proved, as a rookie, he was capable of defeating some of the game’s greatest stars.

3. 1986 Eastern Conference First Round, Game 2

In Michael Jordan’s second NBA Playoff series, the then-22-year-old guard showed immense poise against the formidable Boston Celtics. MJ’s Game 2 takeover is the stuff of legend, giving Larry Bird and company the business en route to a 63-point eruption. Jordan was near-unguardable, making acrobatic layups among towering defenders and nailing jump shot after jump shot. Unleash Jordan’s historic offensive onslaught again in NBA 2K23.

4. 1988 NBA All-Star Game

Despite playing only 29 minutes, Michael Jordan led all scorers with 40 points with a field goal percentage of .739. Take the court as His Airness against a stacked lineup of Western Conference All-Stars including Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Hakeem Olajuwon, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and more.

5. 1989 Eastern Conference First Round, Game 5

Elimination games provide the ultimate test for any competitor looking to establish themselves as a ‘clutch player.’ The Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers sat tied 2-2 entering a win-or-go-home Game 5 in Cleveland, setting the stage for a masterful performance from Jordan. The North Carolina native hung 44 points, nine rebounds, and six assists on the Cavs, giving his team a one-point win to advance. Showcase Jordan’s varied skill set and dash Cleveland’s playoff hopes.

6. 1990 Atlanta Hawks at Chicago Bulls

When recollecting many of Jordan’s must-see duels, his battles with Dominique Wilkins can’t go overlooked. Against one of the premier playmakers in Atlanta Hawks history, Jordan averaged 31.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 6.2 assists in 45 games. On the flip side, Wilkins averaged 29.8 points and 6.8 rebounds versus Michael Jordan in his career. When the duo squared off, it was a heavyweight title match, and you can relive it in the Jordan Challenge.

NBA 2K23 Jordan Challenge

7. 1990 Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers

Some of Jordan’s best games came against the Cavs, but none were more impressive than his 69-point performance. For 50 minutes, Jordan taught a masterclass in scoring, rebounding, and assists, finishing the game with a career-high in points and rebounds with 18. Jordan consistently nailed jump shots, registering 23 field goals, while hitting 21 of his 23 free-throw attempts. Deliver one of the league’s most memorable moments by recreating his historic game.

8. 1990 Eastern Conference Finals, Game 3

There was no love lost between the Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Pistons in the early ‘90s, and their rivalry came to a head in Game 3 of the 1989 Eastern Conference Finals. With the ECF series tied 1-1, Jordan lifted his team to victory the best way he knew how by dropping 46 points and adding five steals for good measure. Duke it out in front of a deafening Chicago crowd in an Eastern Conference heavyweight battle.

9. 1991 NBA Finals, Game 5

At last, Jordan hoists his first Larry O’Brien trophy by defeating the Showtime Lakers, led by Magic Johnson. For six years, the highly coveted championship trophy eluded Jordan, despite his best efforts. The then-27-year-old shooting guard proved he could meet the lofty expectations thrust upon him by defeating a team filled with Hall-of-Fame talent. Bask in the limelight as streamers and confetti fall at your feet.

10. 1992 NBA Finals, Game 1

Once Jordan captured his first title, he developed an insatiable hunger for more rings. In his second consecutive trip to the NBA Finals, Jordan set the tone early against the Portland Trailblazers, putting the game out of reach by the end of the first half. MJ led all scorers with 39 points, serving as the primary contributor in the Bulls’ 33-point blowout win.

11. 1995 Chicago Bulls at New York Knicks

Former college rivals square off once again, this time at the mecca of basketball, Madison Square Garden. At the height of their power, Jordan and Patrick Ewing gave the fans in attendance their money’s worth, trading buckets and elbows in a physical duel. Ewing’s 36 points would typically be enough to beat a team on any given night, but Jordan’s 55 points proved to be too much to overcome. This game is yet another reminder of Jordan’s greatness, and you can experience it firsthand.

12. 1996 NBA Finals, Game 6

Michael Jordan’s fourth championship title was arguably one of his toughest tests. Facing a Seattle Supersonics squad equipped with lockdown defender Gary Payton, also known as ‘The Glove,’ every possession was a slugfest. Payton tried his best to smother Jordan throughout the series, successfully limiting him to a .263 field goal percentage in Game 6, but the offensive assassin found a way to thwart the Supersonics’ championship plan. Dig deep to clinch the title in a grueling battle against formidable foes.

13. 1997 NBA Finals, Game 5

Flu-ridden and teetering on the edge of collapse, Michael Jordan battled sickness and fatigue for 44 minutes and 17 seconds against the Utah Jazz. The famous ‘Flu Game’ is legendary and widely considered one of Jordan’s finest moments as a basketball player. The Bulls found themselves in a less-than-ideal situation early in Game 5, trailing by 16 at one point. Somehow, Jordan managed to power his team back within striking distance, and eventually secured the win. When the clock struck double zero, Jordan had 38 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. He left everything he had on the court.

14. 1997 Chicago Bulls vs. Los Angeles Lakers

Kobe Bryant entered the NBA with a swagger and an air of confidence that resembled shades of Michael Jordan, but whether he was MJ’s heir to the throne remained to be seen. Bryant, who grew up idolizing Jordan, went at his idol all game, determined to prove he was worthy of receiving the torch. The Lower Merion High School product dropped 33 points against MJ and the Bulls, but Jordan’s 36 were a reminder that he still reigned supreme. Teach the up-and-coming Bryant a few things en route to a commanding win.

15. 1998 NBA Finals, Game 6

The Utah Jazz and Chicago Bulls decided their 1997 NBA Finals matchup wasn’t enough, so they ran it back in 1998. All but one game in the series was decided by five points or less, making for some dramatic finishes, with Game 6 serving as the climactic crescendo. To the tune of 45 points, Jordan cemented his legacy and secured his sixth championship title by sending Bryon Russell skidding in the lane with a deadly crossover and drilling the go-ahead bucket with five seconds remaining in the game. Recapture the magic of those final moments and celebrate one of Jordan’s greatest feats.

Available on ALL versions of NBA 2K23, we can’t wait for you to get your hands on The Jordan Challenge! This definitive re-telling of Michael Jordan’s career was a passion project for our development team. To honor such an important person who shaped the NBA into what it is today…what a privilege for all of us here at Visual Concepts. We sincerely hope you enjoy playing The Jordan Challenge as much as we had fun building it. We’ll see you on the hardwood!

  1. New challenges:
    1982 - UNC vs. Georgetown
1984 - Team USA Scrimmage (USA vs. NBA All-Stars, a real life event)
    1988 - NBA All-Star Game
1989 - Eastern Conference Quarterfinals Game 5 (The Shot)
    1997 - Bulls vs. Lakers
    Some other quick hitters:
    * Era filters are back
    * Era-specific gameplay (less 3-point spot-ups, more cuts, Bad Boys-era physicality)
    * Some classic stars receiving signature style revamps (Bird & Magic alluded)
    * Mike Fratello on board as classic color commentator
    * Ray Clay is on board for the Bulls starting lineup presentation (and "Sirius", naturally)
    * Classic coaching sets borrowed from the likes of Phil Jackson, Jack Ramsay, Hubie Brown, Dick Motta, and more
    * Some era-specific rules (illegal defense)
    * Era-specific moves (i.e. players from the 80's won't be utilizing the Shammgod)
    * For the classic junkies: era-correct Moses Malone spotted (bald with goggles) for Hawks-Bulls challenge
    * A number of arenas appear to have era-specific dorna boards, basket stanchions, and advertisements (Boston Garden, in particular, has never never looked more like the Boston Garden).

This mode looks like a piece of art. So many details seem to be accounted for, right on down to the accurate USA-All-Star court at the Hoosierdome. Amazing.
This all sounds absolutely amazing. I have been dreaming about 2K bringing back old school era basketball rules and gameplay.
The only nitpick/request I have left is to make sure these old school era rules, filters and AI can be used in myNBA and not just the Jordan Challenge modes.
The 1984 Team USA Basketball Scrimmage being there is such great addition for old heads like me. I remember watching it live and it confirming what I already knew, even the best players in the NBA weren't going to be able to hold Mike.
This is absolutely incredible. They put a lot of thought into the challenges and picked the right key moments. Wow. Like a video game version of “The Last Dance.”
I wonder if these rules etc. can be used for MyNBA. I would LOVE the bad boys physicality applied.
Good read, but damn that video was sick…
The detail is insane, even the animation transitions look better…and that’s just watching it on my phone. The idea that these graphics are “stale” or behind somehow is wild to me.
    Feed me more.
Phil Jackson back as coach at 57 seconds in video:cheers:
A little confusion about the 90s Bulls warm-ups. They appear at the 1 minute mark but everywhere else the teams are on the bench and tunnel without them.
Not a big MJ fan, but damn this is ridiculous. They went all out with this version of the Jordan Challenge.
This might be the definitive video game "retrospective" of an athlete's career. Amazing work, 2K.

This looks amazing, 2k11 was great and this looks like 11 juiced up. I wish they would do this every year with a different player. Let's get Kobe challenges for 24

Pretty excited now, haha. Not gonna lie. Just seeing the screens, can't watch the video yet, but REALLY looking forward to watching it soon.
The other thing … NOBODY was wearing 2k generics!! Did they really do it?!? Did they really give players era correct shoes!?

WOW! As others have already said this looks amazing! The level of detail & authenticity is phenomenal! Seeing that MJ steal from Karl Malone in the 98 finals gave me chills! The animations look so realistic! Can't wait for this! Bravo 2K!
All sounds great. Now if only this would carry over to the other classic match ups, but it won’t. Only for MJ I guess. Imagine this attention to detail and just creating a classic mode - or any mode - where you can select: filter, rules and gameplay with the options 80s, 90s and modern. So basically take a modern team vs 80s team w/ modern rules, 3pt line and 80s era filter. Shouldn’t be too hard. But this will never happen, 2k will likely take a few years and then present some filter option maybe and then act like it’s new, as they always do. Sigh…
Well, if I had any doubts about preordering the game this just put them to rest. Worth it for this mode alone. If the gameplay improvements are as good as they sounded in the gameplay blog then we can be looking at an all time great 2k.

YO! I didn't even peep that on my 1st 10 times watching the trailer lol. If they finally eliminated generics that would be awesome! No more spending hours of updating shoes in roster editor lol.

I just placed my preorder. I usually wait until the day 2K drops the MyNBA blog to put money down to show my support for franchise mode in whatever metric 2K uses to make decisions. This Jordan mode legit got me excited for 2K23.

Damn you 2K!!! I had to go preorder 2K23 this morning after reading this. LOL. The Jordan challenge looks to be pretty sweet. Glad to see it looks like they are FINALLY going to improve on the classic players models, gameplay, tendencies, ect. This is the most hyped I've been to get NBA2K probably in the past 4 years. I still remember as a little kid watching that shoot out he and Dominique Wilkins had in 1990, it was one of the game that got me hooked on playing basketball. Glad to see they put that as one of the challenges.
2K put so much love, emotion and detail into this, it shows their true capabilities.
Does anyone notice new MJ sigs or sig tweaks?
Looks like we’re getting some new colorways on the 13’s finally.
This is 2k11 on STEROIDS. Wow. Incredible! Off the top I noticed new models for Stockton, Ewing, Pippen…. Curious to see what Shaq looking like. Also really hoping these retro filters, scoreboards, arena logos, scorers tables (etc) are available/present outside of the mode. That Celtics arena is crazy
Well I guess they weren't lying about how smooth animation were looking this year!! Very fluid.
+1 for the crowd (hopefully sound as good as they look)
If the defense is as good as advertised...
    very optimistic:woot:

Sorry but they're still in there. Way less than usual but I seen a player on the Celtics and Jazz with them. I'm excited to see Nike Air on the Jordan 3s and 5s tho, hopefully the 4s too. Right now everything is looking on the up and up and is a guaranteed day 1 purchase. Double dipping around Black Friday for PS5!

Definitely sounds awesome and will be checking that out. I wonder if you will have to reach certain objectives like in WWE 2K to unlock stuff ?

Nope, but if you spend 100k VC you can have it all day one, lol
    Dis trash bruh.
No seriously this looks outstanding! The addition of era specific gameplay styles really has me hooked. 2k11 really brought me back into playing NBA games again so I’m looking forward to this. Sad thought that crossed my mind: I wonder if this will be the last Jordan focused game?

This looks great. That first shot of the United Center blew my mind. It really looks like they put a lot of care into this. I'm really looking forward to all the gameplay style tweaks to reflect the era. Peep that scoreboard too!

I know it isn't perfect, but with how the filter makes it look like a 90s broadcast, you definitely could have fooled me.
    Also, Ray Clay!?? WOW!
    I'm copping!
That last shot against Utah I honestly thought it went into the real life footage.
INCREDIBLE!! I need to pinch myself, I feel like 2K made this game for me. Proof that we live in a matrix and we’re the main character in our own worlds.

Not sure about the other players but I THINK Pippen is the same. If you look at 91/93 Pippen in current 2K games he actually looks like Pippen. For some reason they made an entirely different model for 96+ Pippen that looks nothing like him. Looks like they might have gotten rid of that Pippen and just use the early Pippen model now, which is what I do with my rosters.
Trying to figure out if they updated Jordan’s jumpshot sig. It might look smoother like real Jordan. Current 2K MJ jumpshot is a bit too clunky with elbows out for MJ who has the most pure and fluid form imaginable.
Props 2K. Not a big Jordan fan but this looks amazing and will probably be the first thing I do when I boot up the game before working on MyPlayer.

Jordan is a bum. However, that video was pure fire. That last Cleveland clip had me fooled. I thought that was live footage until I watched it 3 more times. wow.
Now if they can confirm classic tv graphics/filters and 80/90s gameplay can be used as an option in myNba it will be a day 1 purchase for me.
How cool would it be to do matchups of Bulls 96 vs Warriors 17...one game with modern rules and a game with classic rules. Man gets me hyped. Hope we can do it
As a very harsh critic of their art direction the past 5 years, I gotta give them props. The era specific details are outstanding. Shorts still look very stiff and players have no butts, but other than that, the attention to detail is well done. Might have to buy it this year even though I played it like 2 hours total last year. SMH.

The only thing that looks a bit off to me are those tight Shirts, really hope they could bring back the Cloth Physics from next gen 2k14

    That would be incredible.
They mentioned hand checking and tougher physicality for his games. I’m amazed they can actually program in hand checking. It would be a real bummer if you can’t apply those rules to MyNBA. Hand checking if it actually is functional to gameplay and isn’t just for design would be a great way to improve on ball defense especially if 2K nerfes defensive AI after patches. They spent the time and R&D to make it, now let us use it!
If they did those rule options no doubt 96 Bulls vs 17 Warriors would be insanely popular and all over YouTube, dissected, and debated. E.g huge marketing and conversational potential for 2K.
This is amazing and im very excited for this game. It feels like 2K23 is the spiritual successor to NBA 2K11, the greatest basketball videogame ever made.
But I cant help but feel a certain way after reading the article part about the different varied gameplay experiences. It really feels like its gonna be more of a slider adjustment, not something hard coded into the game.
But well, if that means they making sure that every slider actually does what is supposed to do this time, sign me in immediately.

I feel like a couple sequences in that video were rotoscoped or something. The players weren't moving like 2K animations, looked like real footage.
I'm really excited about this mode. But disappointed some of the player models still haven't been touched up. Kerr still has that beefy body, and Rodman has the giant head + short arms syndrome that affects a lot of older player models.

I'm really excited about this mode. But disappointed some of the player models still haven't been touched up. Kerr still has that beefy body, and Rodman has the giant head + short arms syndrome that affects a lot of older player models.

The shot with Jordan dribbling to set up the final shot against the Jazz didn’t look like your standard animations. Good point!

Even better attention to detail than 2k11 Jordan Challenge. Plenty of little things and flourishes that really sell the authenticity. The Finals logo on the 96 jersey the Finals logo on the court in 98 Finals. The black stripe on the 1992 Bulls jersey. Not wearing Jordan's for the 84 Olympics. Video filters for 80s and 90s. Patrick Ewing with a short sleeved t shirt under his Georgetown jersey. The Boston Garden looking very authentic. Just amazing all around would love to see a side by side comparison to the Jordan Challenge in 2k11.
Now, only if we could expand this beyond Jordan lol. I've been waiting since 2k11 and 2k12 to get this level of effort and detail for this type of mode but with Kareem, Magic, Kobe, Shaq, Bird, Wilt, Hakeem, etc.

Wish they would do one every year or even just do a general "greatest games/moments" mode.
Curious to see if the absolutely perfect recreations of those legendary clips are actual gameplay or cut scenes similar to what we got with one of the Prelude clips a few years back when you were waiting for a City game to end. I would guess it’s a cut scene triggered by completing the rest of the challenge but it looks incredible regardless.
I figured I’d just hop into MyCareer on Day 1 but now I’m torn. I know I’ll eventually complete these challenges anyways but it might be the thing I’m most excited for now.

Tbh I don’t really understand why another Jordan challenge again, a Kobe one would be more fitting

2K23 to have a Jordan challenge because of his number maybe.. and Im thinking 2k24 will have Kobe

Knowing 2k, this is 100% going to be a cutscene activated after completing something to set up the scenario. Basically the 2k Showcase mode from the WWE 2k games. The animations are too on point and life like to be natural and they mimic real life too much to be user controlled.
I dont think people realize the "Little things" that NBA
    - They have the EXACT championship caps they wore in the previews
    - Ray Clay has been found and Added to put in that authentic swag
-There seem to have been Bulls warmups added in the 1992 preview, USA team warmups as well
    - They have added the NBA Finals, NBA Playoff logos to match presentation
-Authentic NBA Finals jersey patches that went along with the year
Plus much more...for art heads like me, this adds to SO much

Exactly. That last "The Shot" sequence is 100% CGI and not gameplay. Its clear from the way the other players react and interact to him shooting the ball, no box out.
Thats super fine with me tbh tho.

Yeah, Definitely some cut scenes in there…
I’m moreso impressed with some of the clear action shots we’ve gotten between this and the trailer though.
That filter really adds a lot to the game as well, Really hoping they let us play around with it in other modes..

100 percent agree. Would also add that Pippen seemed to be wearing Nikes for the 92 Bulls and the specific Nike Air More Uptempo for the 96 Bulls.

Unfortunately I’m 99% sure that is a cutscene and not what the actual game will look like in motion. But if they somehow got the animations and player-effort to look like that in gameplay? DAMN.
He still looks a little too skinny on the older bulls teams. In the edit player screen he looks good and has more definition. But when playing it doesn’t show as much

Bro a lot of people take for granted the amount & level of details that 2K puts into the game. We all have our gripes about what we want to be approved (for me it's foot planting), but we can't deny how much work is put into the entire package (modes, presentation, signature animations, etc.) 2K, while not perfect, is in a league of their own when it comes to sports video games. Especially when you start comparing it to that NFL football game that doesn't even have referees on the field LOL (sorry I couldn't resist)
That trailer only made me think of one person, MessenjahMatt!! BIG shoutout to him, because I always think about what he did and how it eventually led us to this.
Man, oh man... I was supposed to be skipping 2K this year, but the trailer just made it a must buy. The level of detail they put into this is just overwhelming in some areas. The courts, with the era-specific look and arena names, the uniforms, just the replay value in this mode is just exciting. As others have said, hopefully the gameplay is on par with what's been implemented with this game, but it could be shaping up to be a memorable installment in the 2K series.

Yeah man. Honestly I love 2K22 and I’ve invested months into building my meticulous rosters and sliders. I DON’T want to do it again. Even if 23 isn’t worth me doing it all over again it even if for some reason I stay with 22 because investing that time into 23 isn’t worth it, I’m buying 23 just to support them for doing this. I can actually say they deserve it. As an MJ fan it’s a must.
    AIRJ23
That last shot against Utah I honestly thought it went into the real life footage.
INCREDIBLE!! I need to pinch myself, I feel like 2K made this game for me. Proof that we live in a matrix and we’re the main character in our own worlds.

If this was truly the Matrix and we were the main characters in our own worlds, this would be a Chris Mullin or Latrell Sprewell challenge. Dont see that happening in my lifetime haha.
But seriously, this looks amazing. I cannot wait. Really hoping we can use the era specific sliders and presentation in other modes! Either way I am pumped!

Well if it makes you feel better, my custom all time league has Mullin, Spree along with Wilt, Steph, Klay, Dray, Iggy etc. on the Warriors. Needless to say they have the best record in the league so far lol.

I am loving that Jordan pull up jumpshot. The footwork looks miles better than what we have had so far. Hopefully that's a new gameplay improvement.

This is what I’m hoping to see. If any detail freaks can pinpoint changes to MJ’s sigs like pull-up, jump shot, dribble moves etc. I’d love to see what you guys think changed. Obviously specifically in game footage, not the cgi cutaways.
I see he still has his between the legs dribble escape package you can see quickly trigger in one scene. His patented triple threat palming appears to likely be the same animation as before. What I’m really wondering is how many new sigs we get.
We better see a patented post fade sig (which he used to have in PS3 era games) although I’m 99% convinced “Pro 4” which is his standard post fade in 2K22 is his actual signature. It looks like him and when I compare to his signature post fade in 2K13 era games, it’s about identical.
The Courtside Report talks about rewriting the transition engine to accurately represent the 80s, which is great, but they better have worked on the 2022-23 transition engine as well so that real fast breaks are possible again in the current NBA games.
seeing clyde sag off mj at the arc is SUCH a good sign. playing retro games have always bern so underwhelming watching defensive ai smother players up there.

Last Dance on Netflix. MJ in MyNBA, watching game 3 of the 96 Finals, MJ book on the table. Daily life.

I always use MJ and Kobe as examples when it comes to drawing inspiration in my job or life. Kobe is there as a more realistic, human example. That there can be no supernatural magic to you, but you can work through your flaws to achieve greatness with dedication and a strong will, belief in yourself.

    No Barkley 😭😭😭

Doubt it but 2k has added legends in after release in the past. If you buy 2k23 on PC I guarantee someone will make a quality Barkley face/mod for free so you can put him in...
Thinking about this throughout the day, I hope we can customize the mode a bit, with rosters, quarter length, exact sliders, etc. That's the one thing that wasn't great about the OG Jordan Challenge, IIRC you had to use the default version of the rosters with a set quarter length and sliders.
this looks absolutely incredible....they are outdoing 2K11 without a doubt. the olympic game, all-star game and kobe game are a nice touch. the filters take this one to the next level. was hoping they would include the legendary dream team blue vs. white scrimmage but that would be maybe asking a bit too much. that trailer too. you had me at michael jordan edition.
I noticed that the 86 Bulls might have the NBA logo on the jersey when the jersey should not have the logo to be accurate. I think they didn't have it right in 2k11 either. Hope they fix it.
    WTF

    This looks NICE.

It does. If I’m being nit picky, the ONLY issue I sort of have with the new MJ scan is they made his head a bit shorter and fuller/stubbier than real MJ who has a very long and chiseled face. Again, small beans but in terms of face SHAPE, the old MJ scan might be slightly more accurate. But in terms of actual scan and details the new one is much more organic and realistic (or maybe I’m just judging from a few angles and overthinking it). See these 2K22 pics for comparison.
P.S I did look closer and Pippen did get a new scan it appears! And he’s finally got his little arm tattoo. Would be cool if Kukoc gets his small one as well.
First time in years I've actually genuinely been excited for a 2k game. But with that, I still have huge reservations about the actual mechanics of the game and editing options for players.
All fine and well having MJ and the challenges back, with all the sexy bells and whistles, but if I don't have the tools to make him play the way he should, (Severely lacking in the last two years) then all this will be a bust. I see signatures have been updated, which gives me a little bit of hope.
I've had nothing but the Snoop Dog 2K theme rolling through my head all night. This 'feels' like it's going to be 2k11 level of good. The company have a habit of throwing out years of sub par entries, then hit us with a BIG one every now and again.
    We shall see.....
Finally we have the Dave Berg challenge mode we’ve been waiting for, I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t get him going head to head with the real2kinsider, but I know who the Real GOAT is around here.

I'm not even gonna come up with a lie as to why I'm not at work on release day. Just gonna email my boss the Jordan Challenge trailer with the subject line Bruh.....

Wish i could do the same damn!!! :google::google::google::google:
The detail is crazy. The ads in the arena change depending on the decade. You can see the old Mountain Dew and AT&T logos in the 90's footage. They were not playing around this time.
I do hope other legends have been updated. It was always so weird to see players that had updated faces next to PS3 models.
I haven’t bought 2k since 20 I believe but this has me excited.

Love that we have an MJ that looks this good so early in this gen.
Keen to see how he moves in terms of signature stuff.....
They forgot to put the dotted restricted area on the 1998 courts haha....
But yeah, I'll be playing as MJ a LOT in 2K23 by the looks of it.
I'm guessing for quick/exhibition games with the classic teams, depending oh which classic teams arena we play in the different classic era filters, logos, ect will still be available. I wouldn't think the 2K devs would be dumb enough to leave that option out.

You would be surprised how dumb sometimes these 2K devs can be at times. I wouldn’t bet on it until we get confirmation from 2K themselves. Imagine all that hard work 2K put in only to have those options available only in the Jordan Challenges mode. Sounds like something 2K would definitely pull.
I always get bored of sports games so I hesitate to get sucked in but this may be worth a day 1 or close to it purchase for me. My issue is I like to play a whole season and for the basketball/baseball games that is just not realistic at 34 with a busy job and wife/toddler. If I just get this for the Jordan classic I am probably better waiting until a sale closer to Black Friday...but this looks so fun and I really do not have any new games to play until perhaps God of War Ragnarok for Christmas probably (although Horizon Forbidden West is awesome and keeping me busy).
I will see what people on here say about the challenge when they get the game probably and if those are good I will probably go ahead and buy this.
My mecca of sports game is NCAA Football so praying that is a good year 1 game next year within reason as that is one sports game I can play a ton of seasons on and not get tired of and can find the time to do it due to shorter seasons.

This seems to have come up a lot in this thread and I hope it gets answered/addressed prior to release.
For example, being a fan of the '82 UNC squad (created them in my Completed Classic Teams roster for 2K13), I'm gonna first do the 1982 NCAA Championship challenge....but do I have to repeatedly play that challenge to use those two teams or can I use them in exhibition games (and with the filter)?
Also, when I edit accessories and shoes for players, will those edits be applied in the Jordan Challenges? For instance, when I edit MJ's shoes (red laces for '86 playoff Jordan, shinier overlay for '96 Jordan, etc), will he have those changes in the challenges?

I’m gonna go with no, edits won’t change the challenge MJ. Those Mj’s will be frozen with specific gear and attributes I’m sure.
Do you mean you edit the 11’s to have shinier patent leather parts? Never though of doing that actually.

I'm pretty sure you could edit them for the Jordan Challenge in 2k11 so it would be pretty disappointing if it was not possible in 2k23. Also I would add that since the 88 All Star game is in the Challenge, I wonder if we get those specific black Jordan 3s and the red knee pad. Also be interesting to see how many of the Eastern and Western Conference All Stars they will have, Barkley was on that East team with Jordan for example.

Yep, ever since 2K13 when the best option for the Jordan XI overlay wasn't Patent Leather but actually Metal. In 2K22, it's not Metal but instead Shiny Plastic.
I'll make 2 rosters: one for the season (ex: classic Bulls teams wear white shoes) and one for the playoffs (classic Bulls teams except '86 in black shoes). I edit every shoe Jordan wore for that respective year because I noticed all are off in one way or another (the closest shoe to being correct in 2K22 is the Fire Red IV). Jordan wore Dunk Sole's in the '86 playoffs so I just make the laces red on the Air Jordan I. I'm a sneakerhead and gotta have the Jordan's on point.
I hope once and for all they can change the default black forearm band to a black elbow band. Jordan only wore it on the forearm when he came back as #45 in 1995 for a few games, and then later for a few games in the 1995-96 season. But most of the time it was on the elbow.
Not going to hold you, I hope when we win or defeat the Challenge for the All Star game, we are able to not only use the team in exhibition, but we would also have the uniforms as a throwback for the All Star Game...
:y1: This is me hoping lol

I am this same way. I am all about authenticity. Especially since they are recreating specific games and putting so much effort into immersion, but getting something so small and easily fixable wrong as, having black shoelaces for the Jordan 1 in the 86 vs Boston Challenge instead of the correct red laces. Also hope they have the correct black All Star Jordan 3s for the 88 All Star Challenge.

Does this mean we will be able to edit the player models accessories for the teams in the Jordan Challenge and have those edits show up in the Jordan Challenge mode itself? I truly hope that ends up being the case.
Era-specific presentation filters and gameplay modifications to represent 80-90's NBA makes this a Day 1 purchase for me. If we can carry these elements into MyNBA, that would be epic.

Does this mean we will be able to edit the player models accessories for the teams in the Jordan Challenge and have those edits show up in the Jordan Challenge mode itself? I truly hope that ends up being the case.

I dont know about that mate. What i mean is that after watching the MJ Challenge trailer, i immediately reached out to 1 of the Dev about the elbow band for his late years and they said that i was correct and the thing will be fixed before the game release.
What’s funny is their cover literally has Jordan’s elbow band on his elbow smack dab in front of their faces yet they still have him on the trailer with it on his forearm. Lol
Does anyone know if we can still draft Jordan to any team as a rookie by beating all of the challenges or with a code like in 2k11? Sure hope so!
Things are looking great for us classic NBA fans. I'm seeing little details that are very promising, to less generic shoes to new bodies and faces.
I hope my bad boys got some much needed love as they were the only team to beat MJ and honestly molded him physically and mentally. If Laimbeer still shoots the ball with that whack *** animation I will throw a serious hissy fit!! Lol

Thinking about this throughout the day, I hope we can customize the mode a bit, with rosters, quarter length, exact sliders, etc. That's the one thing that wasn't great about the OG Jordan Challenge, IIRC you had to use the default version of the rosters with a set quarter length and sliders.

I really hope they let us choose the quarter length. I have a feeling they won't, because the challenges require you to hit certain scoring numbers, and having 12 minute quarters to score 45 points is much easier. But man limiting us to some MyTeam style 4-5 minute challenges seems like a disservice. The presentation is too good for us not to have that 48 minute game option.

Can you pass on thar the 86 Bulls should not have the NBA logo on the jerseys and also that the 88 All Star Challenge Jordan should have the black, cement and red Jordan 3s.
I don’t know if any developer will read this ,but I will give it a try :
Team Colors for classic teams ( road ) one thing I’ve noticed is that once you edit something the team socks will be automatically black on the road ,also the classic team’s backboard will change to a regular team (with nba league pass )
This is really annoying for classic teams ,I hope the devs can fix that .

Love what I’m seeing so far with this mode and 2K23 as a whole, but how the hell do mistakes like this actually happen? I’m legitimately curious.
Probably won't play the mode much not going to lie I only like Myleague. That said I highly doubt 2k would put out another trash game and have Jordan on the cover. He wouldn't allow it and 2k knows they can't because his fanbase would go hard at them. The Jordan cover games have been the ones they put a ton of effort in for the overall gameplay.
Seems like any time the greats were on the cover 2k felt the need to put an effort in. Kobe's was a really good one and Lebron's cover game too.

Yeah, Brad Sellers was number 6 for the Bulls in 1986-1987 and 1987-88, but he changed his number and was n.2 for the 1988-1989 season.

Why would they change something from the 80’s and 90’s? in regards to #6?
It only applies moving forward and btw if you currently wear #6 in the Association you are grandfathered in once they retire it league wide.
Just like Mariano Rivera wore 42 till he retired. He was grandfathered in after the league wide retirement of Jackie’s numbers.

The most intriguing Challenge games that I'm very interested in is the 84 Olympics scrimmage and the88 All Star game. Hopefully it means we will get some new player models of some great legends that otherwise aren't in the game. Such as a younger version of Karl Malone, Hakeem when he was Akeem, young Charles Barkley, a younger Dominique Wilkins, a young Ewing. In fact this game should have multiple player models for multiple legends. We should get college age Jordan, Ewing, and Worthy, as well. Also hoping for All Star specific accessories for the 88 All Star game like the sweat bands with All Star logos and the larger NBA logos for the socks which was blue for the East and Red for the West. Also the players should have each of their individual accurate team warmup jackets when sitting on the bench. Would do a lot for accuracy and immersion, which they are striving for.
    This. Looks. Incredible
Don’t have to say more than what’s already said.
If we can use the era specific filters and gameplay options in play now/MyNBA .. classic roster makers are going to have a FIELD day with this

Spotting a bald, rec-specs wearing version of Moses Malone on the Atlanta Hawks is a good sign. I'm pretty sure 2K's only had the prime Moses Malone model for years but I stand to be corrected. Hopefully he's not the only player to get the era-specific treatment.

Even if they don't provide era filter and gameplay options outside of the Jordan Challenge this year, my hope would be that they could build off these options this time around and maybe work toward full game inclusion in the future. Anything aside from abandoning these features altogether like they did last time. This stuff is too creative and unique to leave behind.
Another thing I hope is addressed is for the Utah Finals teams, Hornacek and Stockton should both have short shorts. I really hope they do not have them in baggy shorts. The only footage we have seen from either the 97 or 98 Finals Challenge games appeared to be cutscenes, which the lighting and colors for the Jazz court looked fantastic and accurate, but it looked like Hornacek had baggy shorts. I hope that lighting and accurate court coloring is present during actual game play and I hope that they correct the inaccuracies in player models for the cutscence and gameplay.

Also speaking of Era specific treatment, I realized that the 89 Playoffs THE Shot Challenge vs the Cavaliers means we get prime Cavaliers Ron Harper, and I really hope his player model looks like young Ron Harper not the Bulls Harper. The 96-98 Harper player model looks fantastic and accurate to that time, but would not work for a 1989 prime Ron Harper. After looking at the cut scene from the 89 playoffs Challenge, it looks like the Ron Harper player model is still the same 96-98 Bulls player model with bald head and beard which is inaccurate to his 89 appearance where he had hair and just a goatee. Hope this gets fixed. Also after looking at some freeze frames from the trailer, I noticed James Worthy wearing the correct number 52 for the Carolina Tarheels and no goggles which is encouraging. Noticed that 1989 Horace Grant may also be correct with no goggles as well. They seem to have made some strides in accuracy and authenticity with attention to detail. Hopefully they can perfect it for release or patch in updates, because it really sells the immersion of these specific games. Noticed a lot of 90s sneakers as well and very few generics which is also fantastic.
I also noticed some key updates like a brand new player model for 1990 Pistons Dennis Rodman, a brand new player model for 1986 Celtics Bill Walton that finally is not just 1970s Bill Waton in a Celtics jersey, and what seemed like a new 1996 Sonics Gary Payton with more accurate skintone. Also 1990 Pistons Rodman was wearing Reebok sneakers. All of these updates and changes are absolutely fantastic!

Man the attention to detail some of y'all have is unreal (I mean that as a compliment). I'm hoping there aren't any important players missing from classic teams and that player likeness is mostly on point. Meanwhile, some of you guys are talking about sock colors, accurate shoes, player accessories, and patches on jerseys.
2k should seriously hire some of you as art consultants. They bring in all these streamers to play the game and hype it up, why not talk to some OS community members about art improvements?

Does that mean Bulls Rodman gets a new face scan at least? His face looks like a wild animal in current 2K more than it does a human being. They had his face far better in the PS3 games.
I recently watched that 98 Bulls/Lakers game. There’s a high res hardwood classics of it. I didn’t know MJ had dislocated finger that season which announcers discussed explained his lower fg%. He just played through it.
Watching him and young Kobe is a true sight. MJ was sharp and refined as ever and you can see Kobe studying every move and wanting to prove himself. That’s the same game they’re seen talking at half court, where after the game MJ says Kobe asked him how he did a certain move and Mike clearly respected him enough to tell him.
Kobe scored over 30 that game but he got into early foul trouble so the majority of those points were in garbage time against the Bulls bench remnants. I have a feeling the challenge won’t show it like that though as they’ll feature a more head to head matchup.
Let's try not to be too harsh on 2k on some of the little things they missed. They absolutely knocked it out the part from the preview, so hopefully they can update the Brad Sellers number, the Laker socks, Short shorts etc before launch.

Agreed. Some just have an eye for certain things. I can respect it.
I can tell you the first set the Spurs ran against the Knicks in the first quarter of the ‘99 Finals, but you could offer me a million dollars to name every accessory our starting lineup wore that game and I’d fail miserably, lol

I've been saying that for years. They did hire R4zor who was doing face mods on PC to work on legends faces starting in 2k20 I believe. Would also add that they should do what even 2k11 two system generations ago got right, which was the Red material on the Bulls jerseys before 1993 had a shiny look to the Bulls lettering and numbers on the jersey. Also Phil Jackson should have a different player model for the 96-98 Bulls than he does for the 90-92 Bull. It looks like he might just have one player model as the Bulls coach, where as his second three peat model should have a beard with more gray hair. I'm wondering speaking of coaches, if they have Doug Collins as the 89 Bulls coach or Bobby Knight as the 84 USA coach.
I've been trying to post the image of the jersey but it's not working. Here is the link
    https://www.bstn.com/uk_en/p/mitchell-ness-chicago-bulls-authentic-jersey-1991-1992-michael-jordan-23-ajy4lg19006-cbuwhit91mjo-0158404
The numbers should have that same texture on the lettering and numbers and that shine to the material. If 2k11 had them then 2k23 on a next generation system could do an even better job of replicating that look.

I remember when Anthony Mason was in 2k. I’m guessing this in the PS3 days. In game, he had tattoos on each arm. I can’t remember Mase ever having tattoos when he played. Maybe small ones but nothing like you saw in the game.

My hunch is most if not all of the classic player updated models and accurate shoes will be for players featured in the Jordan challenge. Which is pretty good in itself cause it’s a lot of good players.
I also wonder if we’ll be able to use Phil Jackson as a coach in MyNBA. That would be a game changer.
Although their new “staff in team shirts” thing will look super off and goofy with Phil. I personally wish they kept the staff suits. It provides more variance than everyone wearing the same generic team gear and is more true to form for fans of classic ball. Jordan Challenge will surely have staff in suits, but I’m talking about regular modes.
The accessory part is a game changer ,it makes a huge difference, some of those tweaks are minor (for example the black socks )it’s been years since 2k has done that part wrong ..and I just don’t understand why they won’t fix it ..it’s just not accurate ..let’s hope it will be fixed before release.
My biggest thing is player signatures and tendencies these days.
Everything could look absolutely photorealistic, with 100% complete accuracy, but if the players aren't doing what they should be doing in relation to their real life counter parts, then it's a deal breaker.
Every year I put in months of work to rectify the absolutely HORRENDOUS classic team player tendencies just to get them even a fraction close to playing the way they should.
I've been saying this for a while now, but all it takes for 2K is to get this right just ONCE. These teams are all old, legacy squads that aren't currently playing - do your research, get the tendencies right for all of them, just ONCE and you'll never have to adjust them again. They can be carried over into the next iterations of the game.
Adequate signatures for players. Correct Dunk packages. Below the rim players being given the correct layup packages and no dunk options. Bigs given proper post tendencies. Legends given correct badges that reflect their actual playstyles. etc etc.
Just once, 2k. That's all it needs.

Just noticed something that I've been wanting them to update for years. The 80s Celtics no longer have those knee high tube socks. They gave us a striped crew sock length. The players won't look as ridiculous anymore.
Some things I am hoping for in regards to authenticity for the Jordan Challenge
-They have warmups for the 84 Team USA and his 90s Bulls teams, would be great to get his University of North Carolina warmups and the earlier Bulls warmups for the 86 team in the Arrival Challenge vs the Celtics which I also hope have their accurate 86 warmups.
    - in the 82 Championship Challenge University of North Carolina vs Georgetown, I'm hoping for Dean Smith as the UNC coach and John Thompson for Georgetown, and for the 84 Team USA Challenge Bobby Knight as the USA coach.
    - The Rodman player model for the Passing The Torch Challenge should not have his hair coloring from the 1998 Finals but should instead be primarily blonde in order to be accurate to the actual game vs the Lakers.
    - The 1997 and 1998 Scottie Pippen should not be wearing his Nike Air More Uptempo but rather his 1997 signature sneaker the Nike Air Pippen 1 in 1997and Nike Air Pippen 2 for 1998. In the footage and images I've seen from the Jordan Challenge I haven't been able to make out which sneakers Pippen has in the 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1995 teams, but for 1989 and 1990 it would be great to have the Avia 885 and the Air Flight lite low for 1991, Nike Air Flight lite 2 for 1992, The Nike Air Up or Jordan X for 1995.

It not a "2k is lazy" thing if they arent is all I'm saying haha
Something I just noticed in the footage from the Jordan Challenges.... the Bulls logo on the home uniforms for the 90, 91, and 92 teams is wrong. They have the Bulls logo from the 93, 95, 96, 97 and 98 uniforms instead of the Bull that is outlined in white, which would be correct. I hope this is addressed once again especially with all the focus on accuracy to the time period and after they just announced all the uniform rebrands or jersey changes reflected in NBA Eras mode. The main reason I hope it gets fixed is because it's not something we can simply edit like an armband or accessory color but instead is just part of the player model team uniform art.
Here is an image from the 1992 Finals illustrating what I am talking about. Observe the Bulls logo on the shorts..

Interesting. Never realized it was different between the years. I assume 2K22 has it wrong as well?
