Hello, franchise fans! It’s that time of year to go over the new additions and changes to MyNBA for NBA 2K22 on next-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms. Without a doubt it’s been a crazy year for everyone, but we’re still dedicated to making sure we push to deliver the greatest sports simulator on the planet. 2K22 is another great step forward in our unending quest towards perfection and taking steps to excite and delight our dedicated fanbase. Below, we’ll detail what it means to build out and solidify a championship-caliber staff, the roles you’ll need to fill, and how training can make or break a title run. Without further ado, let’s get into the good stuff!

MySTAFF

Back in 2K14, we took basketball franchise gameplay to the next level with MyGM, allowing players to fully take on the role of running an NBA Franchise from the ground up. In 2K20, we pushed forward in the next step of evolution to MyGM 2.0, but we’ve still had our eye on how we can improve the experience for users, while staying true to the heart and vision of having the best sim franchise experience possible.

The more we thought about it, the more it became clear that we needed to improve the depth of not just the GM, but those around them that make any organization run –the staff. We see in other parts of the game that players love the depth and customization that basketball players can get when it comes to their attributes, tendencies, and badges. We already see it from our brilliant community with the time and effort they put into making custom rosters and draft classes, yet even if they wanted to, they face difficulties when molding a MyNBA Staff in the same way.

As such, we redesigned how your staff works from the ground up. New attributes, more than double the staff badges, and a slew of new roles. We’ve completely re-imagined this aspect of the mode and are proud to show off the newest addition –MySTAFF.

Staff Overview

NBA 2K22 MyNBA

First, let’s take a look at the new Staff Carousel. We’ve kept a similar format to help make sure it still feels intuitive to those familiar with the old system, but I’m sure a few things jump out in the above screenshot where you’ll notice everyone listed here is a coach, as well as ‘Coaching’ listed in the upper portion of the screen. We’ve greatly expanded the staff for every team, so now you have four departments with positions you’ll need to fill:

  • Front Office (Governor, GM, Assistant GM, CFO)
  • Coaching (Head Coach, Shot Doctor, Bigman Coach, Post Defense Coach, Perimeter Defense Coach, Guard Guru, Wing Whisperer)
  • Scouting (Head Scout, 4 Domestic Scouts, 2 Foreign Scouts)
  • Sports Medicine (Team Doctor, Strength Trainer, Stamina Trainer, Sports Psych, Sports Science, Physio, Sleep Doctor)

The Front Office needs every position filled, and you need a head of each department. Beyond that, you’ll have a cap of 17 total staff positions you can fill, in addition to balancing the staff budget.

You’ll have to determine what exactly is most important to your franchise, because similar to real life, franchises will have their strengths and weaknesses. Will you opt for a revolutionary training team with shades of the Phoenix Suns, able to mitigate injuries and give a second wind to older players, or perhaps focus more on a brilliant coaching staff like Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs who impacts what happens on the court? Do you want to try and fish for the next great international player, or perhaps forgo international scouting entirely? These are all questions that you’ll be able to answer directly, with the freedom to make the team that you want to see.

If this looks a little overwhelming, don’t worry! We also make sure to give you a general evaluation of each department, so you can understand the team’s strengths and weaknesses, and give suggestions on where and when to fill!

Attributes and Badges

NBA 2K22 MyNBA

In addition to the changes to the departments, you’ll notice that we now have a new spread of attributes available. One of the things we love most at 2K is watching how a story can unfold –from the sculpted experience of MyCAREER, to the more organic sandbox nature of MyNBA. We think it’s compelling when what we’re playing is more than just numbers on a spreadsheet, but an interesting narrative that comes to life and really makes for an engrossing experience. To help facilitate this, we’ve made a lot of the attributes that go into Staff more universal, so it’s possible to have a staffer that you can freely put in different departments and watch them grow.

As an example, we have the new attribute Charisma. This has almost no effect for a CFO buried in spreadsheets, but is essential for a department head, GM, or assistant GM. Money Sense would be the prime attribute for a CFO, but it also is relevant for a GM attempting not to get fleeced in a trade deal. We have a glossary to fully explain what each of the attributes entail, but the general gist is that it will be much easier for staff members to transfer across multiple departments and jobs, especially based on what the player feels their franchise needs.

In the above screenshot, we can see that when attempting to hire a new Strength Trainer, the default sort is by Sports Medicine, which is the best attribute for a strength trainer(and most other Sports Medicine staff). You can then scroll over and see how the rest of their attributes stack up, or get a quick look at how many badges they have. We’ve done our best to help make the system more robust, while giving players the tools to get the information they need to make a smart decision. And if you want an expanded view, we can pull up the staff card!

Deep Dive

MySTAFF is a dramatic change to how you approach a franchise in the big picture, and the staff you have will have immense effects both in terms of how your team performs in a given year, as well as the direction your franchise takes in the long run. To take a deeper dive, let’s take a look at the Sports Medicine department, as well as the various jobs found within:

  • Team Doctor –Impacts all of the other Sports Medicine jobs, and in the event of a vacancy in the position, uses the Team Doctor’s attributes and badges at half capacity.
  • Strength Trainer –Assists in the development of strength and vertical.
  • Stamina Trainer –Assists in the development of conditioning, stamina, and hustle.
  • Sports Psych –Impacts team chemistry and morale; without the presence of a strong Sports Psych, it’s possible teams can tailspin into a negative cycle of morale and team chemistry drops.
  • Sports Scientist –Essential to the prevention of injuries, they help both give benefits in terms of player durability on individual body parts as well as reducing the chance to be injured.
  • Physio –The one that helps players rehab from injuries.
  • Sleep Doctor –Helps manage the health and wellness of players, allowing them to better manage season fatigue.

All of the jobs have been designed to be important and leave the player to make meaningful choices. Do you have a young and healthy team, and prefer to focus on having strong trainers? Or do you have a roster of older vets and the focus is more on injury prevention and mitigation? These are questions that you’ll have to ask and evaluate yearly as your lineup changes.

Another point to consider is the fact that Staff will grow and develop, as well. Attributes will generally grow on their own over time with a slight lean towards the job they’re currently performing, but based on the influence of staff members around them, staffers will be more or less likely to acquire badges over time. Any staff can theoretically become another staff job type, especially if they have core attributes that align well with their new jobs. Badges will come with time, so if you think a staffer has the attributes for a key position you’d like to see down the line, you can adjust them freely and see them grow and flourish into their new position the way you imagine it.

Updated Staff Card

NBA 2K22 MyNBA

Our roster team has done an awesome job of trying to best fill out real-life staff members in the roster with appropriate attributes and badges, to help bring the authenticity of the real-life NBA to you. As one of the most illustrious coaches of our era, we can see that Gregg Popovich is both a perfect example of how staff should progress and an example of a real-life story that we want to see unfold in the new MySTAFF System. In 1994 as the Spurs’ GM, he ended up installing himself as the Head Coach and flourished into one of the all-time greats. Able to handle everything both on and off the court, Pop has numerous badges across multiple job types, so no matter whom he’s staffed in, he’ll likely have the attributes to make it work, and likely a bevy of silver, gold, and hall of fame badges to bolster his abilities.

In this image we can also get a look at the overview, allowing you to see highlights of attributes, badges and their aptitude towards various jobs –department heads at the top, followed by front office, followed by all of the collective sub-jobs grouped together by their old, simple names (assistant coach, scout and trainer). You can even delve further to get more information on what staff can do, and everything you see here is also available for change in Edit Staff so roster makers can continue to adjust and iterate to make your ideal MySTAFF.

Training

In addition to MySTAFF, our other flagship feature for 2K22 is the improvements to team and player training. For a long time, we’ve had some awesome ways to custom-tailor how players would progress, by giving them archetypes and allowing training under the hood to help guide and direct them so players could feel the impact of choosing how player training would develop. However, there were a few hiccups –it was tough to get to the nifty menu where you could determine the player type and position, and managing training and rest felt difficult as it was never quite clear how team fatigue was balanced against training. In addition, it would also be difficult to truly emulate the real-life NBA of having coaches running teams and offenses with a specific style in mind, and in the end we felt that we could, and would do better.

Prep Hub

NBA 2K22 MyNBA

First, to help assist with training is a new menu called the Prep Hub. This is designed to be a one-stop shop for anyone that is looking to try and adjust team training and fatigue, while having a mind towards the scouting report of your next opponent. You can also see the team proficiency, which is a simplified way of explaining how well the current players are able to play and adapt to the Head Coach’s current system proficiency. We wanted to make a deliberate choice to try and make play styles matter, so having a coach specialized in 7 Seconds or Less run and gun offenses will have to adapt to a roster with taller, more defensive oriented players. This also helps stress the importance of having your MySTAFF built to suit the needs of your team, as you may want more trainers and coaches depending on how your team proficiency is, and how hard you need to work to learn.

Team Training

NBA 2K22 MyNBA

Next up, we can see the planned training for the next three weeks. There’s a snapshot in the lower right to let you know about the team’s current state and fatigue, as well as how many players are injured or currently on load management. For every team, the Head Coach will generate a training schedule according to their beliefs and interests of what they think will be the best. From there, it becomes a balancing act to make sure that players have a high Game Fitness, or else they’ll be sluggish and have lower attributes and lower energy available for the actual games. It will be on the player to adjust the workload as necessary, especially for teams with deep playoff ambitions to make sure team fatigue doesn’t creep too high during the regular season.

You’ll be able to see a brief description for every practice type, as well as the intensity, fatigue, and injury risk for each practice. Players will also be able to make ‘smart’ decisions for themselves, so if players are set to have load management and the fatigue hit or injury risk is too high, they’ll opt to do lower-stress practice instead and continue to train towards their ideal player type.

Individual Training

NBA 2K22 MyNBA

When looking at Individual training, now it’s easier than ever to choose a player’s ideal skill training focus. This will affect all individual training and will help make sure that a player’s attributes grow in that direction over time. A player’s fatigue, injury risk, and load management are all visible in the spreadsheet now. As such, it’s easier than ever to help guide MyNBA fans into knowing the state of the roster and figure out the ideal training path for all players on their team.

Compact Spreadsheets

NBA 2K22 MyNBA

We’ve been hard at work at improving one of the most essential parts of the franchise experience –the spreadsheets! Now across the mode, we’re using a different style to help have much tighter, more condensed spreadsheets. This means the places where you want to see a lot of info –the roster, the coach gameplan, the box score –will now display more than double the lines previously. We think that this is honestly one of the greatest possible improvements we could make to the mode, and will make the average quality of life for any MyNBA player go up. We hope you love the new look as much as we do!

Conditional Coaching

Another new feature we are really excited for is Conditional Coaching, which gives power users the ability to help give coaching directives while they simulate games. Using symbolic logic, you’ll be able to input powerful commands that will look for specific conditions in the game, and if they occur, make coaching changes accordingly. As an example, one of our pre-set simple conditions is ‘Garbage Time’ –all you have to add is a point value, like 10. Once set, it makes it so that if in the fourth quarter, if the point differential is 10 (up or down) and there’s only a little bit of game time left, you sub out the starters and get in the bench to help make sure you can play rookies and get them extra game time when the game has been decided. We’re eager to see how much our hardcore fanbase will love the ability to truly sim the way they want to play.

New Pre-Built Teams

NBA 2K22 MyNBA

In the interest of making the customization of new leagues easier and to give some new fun challenges for our players, we’ve also rolled out three new pre-built custom teams, complete with logos, uniforms and arenas! The new teams in the lineup are:

  • Bronx Brawlers
  • Honolulu Breeze
  • Omaha Airmen

You won’t have to do anything crazy to see them in action; just opt to customize the league and add them as pre-built teams like you have in the past, or add them as expansion teams down the line.

In Summary

We’ve got big changes to MySTAFF and Training to add new layers of depth to any type of MyNBA you create, plus better spreadsheets across the mode, new pre-built teams to play with, greater control over the way your teams run via simulator, and a countless number of bug fixes and other minor improvements to continue to improve your experience this year!

We want to give a special thanks to all of our dedicated fans that pass along feedback and suggestions–we are always listening, and every year use the words and feedback you provide to keep pushing us forward and making something we’re confident you’ll enjoy. From the franchise team, to you the player, we hope you have a great time with NBA 2K22 and have another fantastic year!

  1. Man, all of this isn't going to matter if in-game injuries aren't completely re-worked. I mean, I guess it sounds interesting but for the first time in a long time, I came away unimpressed by a 2k franchise blog. I think that I'll hold out and see if what some old-timers think and if they can find anything that wasn't mentioned in the blog before I take the plunge.
So lots of changes to the MyGM aspect of MyNBA. That’s amazing for those who geek out on that part.
Any changes AT ALL to the MyLeague part of MyNBA? Don’t see one thing mentioned regarding presentation or otherwise.
I wish they add preseason games back in. Also wish you could use an expansion team with only 12 teams. Unless I missed it the only way you could was with the full 30 teams.
Since they only talked about MyStaff, Training and the Pre-Built Teams, I'm going to assume that everything else in the mode is the same and has been fine tuned. I hope so. I like how MyStaff sounds. Can't wait to get into it on Friday!
Edited to add: No other sports game franchise mode comes close to being this deep. If you are a franchise guy and everything works pretty well, what more could you ask for. I read this stuff and automatically my mind goes to "what would this look like if _____(insert whatever sports game you like) had this in Franchise Mode?
    I'm hyped!
Now lets hope that they include the real staff and not some made up names.

This one is great. No more 5 screenshots per team to display the whole boxscore.
Nothing about immersion. No new homepage or ticker during games or revamped halftime show or anything. That sucks. This all sounds nice but I honestly never cared that much about staff. I just hope the Gleague bug and crashes were addressed at this point. The gameplay looks polished enough so I'm sure I'll dig into it.

Can the shot doctor "fix" Ben Simmons shot yes or no? Let's get to the important questions

Or can the Sports Psych make him more aggressive and less passive?

No, but a skilled GM might be able to get an all-star caliber player coupled with four 1st round picks...
Very underwhelming. Lol at adjusted spreadsheets in the blog although I will like it for sure but LOL! You know your struggling to find things to add to the blog when that’s in it! These 2k blogs this year have been horrendous!
But intrigued on depth with this…
    CONDITIONAL COACHING

    Brian Mazique said this…
Among the newest features are Conditional Coaching (which allows users to input commands that employ certain strategies for specific instances in a game).
If we can set this up for cpu teams coaches then this is a great feature. If it’s just for sims then not so much. Although it would be nice when using sub rotations that the cpu would change and break from that in blowouts late in games! Also it would be great if we can change things based on foul trouble.
As far as the coaching badges, etc I’m hoping a few things.
1 - coaching badges can effect teams AI in game or how they adjust, etc.
2 - With coaching edits hopefully ability to change freelances and series per team is a option finally outside of in game?!
3 - Can we finally change defensive help d settings per team outside of game to seperate teams from 1 another?
2k22 really sounds like a year to fine tune everything from 21 IMO… at least from what we have read so far…
Curious about CPU team management logic: trades, roster construction, qualifying offers, etc.
It's been so bad for so long, and I just don't have the time or will to do it all manually for all teams anymore. Nothing is mentioned about this CPU auto team management logic.
Not mad they seem to have done nothing with draft classes. The community mostly does this better anyway.
Is any of this going to work with MyNBA online though? It's great for normal franchises but if you're trying to create a MLO, how does fatigue work when there is a flex schedule?
Last year the training, wear and tear, etc. didn't work if you were doing a MLO. I'm really hoping they figured out how to work with a flex schedule where you don't have to play the games in order.
Better spreadsheets are literally the best thing about this.
MyStaff improvement is cool but feels better overcomplicated and I REALLY doubt that the AI will do a good job managing all that for every team.
Honestly, I expected more. Mostly regarding the broken morale/chemistry system, the broken Mentoring system, the broken G league system, the Play In Tournament…
Easy W if all of it works. Definitely need in game injuries and I’m assuming my staff features will be in my league mode as well if not then that’s a huge L

Don't forget also, nextgen released in November 2020. This is a shorter development cycle, during a COVID year when they were all unexpectedly working virtually.
Just saying. In all that context, the franchise mode stuff is not the top priority, as we all know.
    oldman
No mention of start today mode making a come back. Has anyone seen anything on this?

Didn't they clearly communicate that it will come back this year, when the schedule is back to normal? I don't feel like that would be worth a announcement.
I like the coaching staff update, but it would be great if they would add more real coaches so it makes more fun to manage the coaching staffs. In the end you always rotate the same assistant coaches to head coaching job every save game.
I just hope the play in tournament wasn't mentioned because it is a given to be in the game this year. But all in all what they talked about is cool.
    InRodWeTrust
I wish they made player tendencies change as their attributes do. What the point of developing a sharpshooter is he wont shoot it with a hand in his face?

Oh yeah, I forgot about manually adjusting player tendencies across the whole league as time passed so that offensive usage, shot charts and such kept up with player development and regression within teams.
So much manual work for a mutli-year offline sim experience, and the logic and coding are hard to do. So they don't do it, there aren't enough of us and we don't pay micro-transactions much.
    1. Are there in game injuries?
    2. Are all teams still set to "pound ball inside" on offense so every team plays the same?
    3. Do CPU coaches recognize foul trouble yet? Tired of seeing guys with 4 fouls in the 1st half
    4. Why does 2k think the answer to everything is a badge? Better AI logic and IQ would go further
The depth added to staff is cool, but I'm skeptical its going to work properly for CPU teams. Really just sounds like the Gatorade facility and boost stand with a different name. They drop NBA assassin's creed then tell the franchise guys about spreadsheets...lmao

No question. I mentioned that in another thread and czar touched on that yesterday in his stream.
I’m not mad at taking a year to fine tune ever as long as the fine tuning works and improves the gameplay.

Agree. My brother isn't into other sports games besides Madden and he's a big franchise guy. I always think of him when these 2K blogs drop because he would lose his mind if Madden had a franchise mode anywhere close to this.
TBH it's all a little overwhelming and intimidating for me but it's hard not to be impressed with how much depth is in the mode, and I'd argue it goes across most modes in 2K whether it be My Career, The City/Neighborhood, My Team, My NBA, etc. I'd even add gameplay to the list despite it's flaws and areas of need of improvement.
"a countless number of bugfixes and other minor improvements to continue to improve your experience this year!"
Not sure what this means, but this will be the biggest determinate on how good myna/league is this year.
    cthurt
I just hope the play in tournament wasn't mentioned because it is a given to be in the game this year. But all in all what they talked about is cool.

This. I will be greatly disappointed if the play-in tournament is not included.

I would have been more impressed if the created teams just worked properly instead of this, you couldn't call up players if you sent them to the g-league with a created team they need to fix that kind of stuff.
After rereading the blog I'm still underwhelmed but I do think I'll enjoy these editions. I watched Da Czars video detailing some of the defensive changes and explaining some of the challenges the dev team faced this cycle. There are more important things in life.
Going forward though, spreadsheets arent fun or engaging. I'd much rather put Ben Simmons through the shooting drills in MyCareer to improve his shooting than assigning some coach to do it. Let me put in the work myself. Let me draft a defensive stud like Kawhi and work like hell to develop him into an all around player; then be devastated when he demands a trade or won't resign. That's the kind of stuff that gets me engrossed in the mode. Let us use the tools already in the game in MyCareer to develop our MyNBA players if we choose. I know it isn't as simple as copy and paste but I need that kind of player agency depth.

They should of reintroduced the Euroleague and integrated it with the " Draft and Stash " picks in MYNBA, the GLeague and NBA teams. I thought they would do it since Luka was on the cover and it seem like NBA 2k22 was more of a focus on the International stage. Disappointed, that's all I can say. Coaching staff improvements is nice. But, a lot left on the table.
I hope former players that are not Hall of Famers or All-Stars become coaches when they retire. I like having cyberfaces in staff positions as much as possible. Although it's cool, I'm not sure why HOFs become staff over regular players in the first place, a lot of them just move on elsewhere irl, but whatever.
Being able to mold faces of our MyStaff would be great as well.
Unfortunately, while this is a step in the right direction, I don't think I will be purchasing the game this year at full price since these upgrades (along with the gameplay) aren't substantial enough to warrant it for me. I'll just do MyNBA leagues with legends in the meantime in 2K21 until the price drops.
By the way, what happened to player sons in future draft classes? Did those just get quietly removed?
And no mention of the play-in tournament?! I assumed that would be a 100% lock to be in the game, but now I'm not sure.******** src="moz-extension://09c26c1a-b1b0-4d50-9540-b39cb92bb84c/js/app.js" type="text/javascript">
Just checking on the MyNBA/MyGm crowd...
Seems like 2KSports wrote some good blogs across the board and told us mostly everything that we wanted to hear this year.
Still a lot of "Let's wait and see" comments, lol.
Adding stuff will mean nothing if the previous stuff don’t get fixed.
Coaching staff may boost attribute progression or limit regression, so was the progression and regression addressed? Mentoring hardly added the badges properly, G League had people jumping up 10 overall points at some point.
New features are great but you have a great product available already if you just spend time addressing the features that are broken
Next step is to bring some Mycareer elements over, for example:
Playable training/drills to increase attributes and earn badges
    Sideline interviews for created players
    Press conferences
Stand out Rookies/Created players getting magazine covers/billboards etc. to view on social media feed
Just to name a few. This blog was so boring and weak, just calling it like I see it.

Wonder if they added historical career records for coaches. That would be nice.
Would also loke to see coaches have their own playbooks/freelance/series assigned to them rather than having the warriors run the same stuff no matter who is the coach and who is on the team. Franchise mode features should always be developed with people progressing 5+ years into the future in mind
I was complaining about the MyCareer stuff yesterday because what was once a mode I could potentially put a lot into just isn't my thing at all anymore.
This blog has raised my interest some. The new spreadsheets sound great. I skipped out last year and still don't have a newer gen system but I like the look of the menus. I don't know how they looked last year. The new MyStaff stuff does look cool but I don't know if I'd really spend more than just a few minutes a season with something like that.
I like that they added new pre-built teams. That's something I've been wanting for a while.
I'm still holding out to read some reviews and see more gameplay. I had such a negative experience with 2k20 and I really haven't been happy with the direction of the series since 2k18, I doubt I'll ever pre-order this series again.
Wow this was boring and expected quite frankly. Wonder if they actually got a full roster of assistants along with this, because it sounds like creating something that takes a lot of work that will have little impact or too much if you want to just focus on the rotations, main staff and games.
    LeBlonde James
Wow, all of this sounds amazing but No mention of the play in tournament?

Yeah, given that the Play-In was introduced prior to 2k21's release, I assumed that it would've been at the top of the list in terms of new features for MyCAREER / MyNBA. Maybe it was and we'll get it, but I would've expected them to hype it up in the MyNBA blog (assuming there won't be a Part 2).
Some considerations though: The NBA just formally confirmed that the Play-In will be back, so maybe 2k wanted to let it settle a bit in real life before really going all out on trying to integrate it. For instance, they would presumably want the Play-In to be accounted for in the Harlan & gang commentary, and I would understand if they wanted to hold back on having people record a bunch of a stuff before the league has affirmed its commitment to the Play-In. That said, I see no reason why the mechanics themselves couldn't have been added anyway, just as an option when you're setting up your league (like when you're picking Games per Season, Playoffs as Best of 5 or 7, etc.) -- and maybe they have, or maybe that too would've been too difficult to be worth it if the league had nixed the Play-In for '21-22.
As for what they did add, any big investment in adding depth to franchise mode gets a standing ovation from me, even if it wasn't at the top of my list. A couple things I'd like to have seen as part of MyStaff (unless I skimmed over them in the blog) is Create-A-Staff (i.e., so we have more flexibility in terms of their appearance) and Staff DNA (so we can pool our efforts and easily download niche staff members; like, as a Warriors fan I might go through the trouble of making Chris DeMarco, but no Magic fan is, though ideally that person would be able to download mine). What they did add is excellent in principle though.
The only thing that worries me is that 2k has had a poor track record lately in terms of aspects of the game that involve players evolving in any way, most notably Player Progression/Regression. Like...
    LorenzoDC
Oh yeah, I forgot about manually adjusting player tendencies across the whole league as time passed so that offensive usage, shot charts and such kept up with player development and regression within teams.
So much manual work for a mutli-year offline sim experience, and the logic and coding are hard to do. So they don't do it, there aren't enough of us and we don't pay micro-transactions much.

...this actually terrifies me, because guys like CelticLG put so much work into getting the tendencies right, so if the 2k AI were to try and evolve all of the tendencies in the offseason, it would in all likelihood demolish all of that work and throw everything out of balance again.
Tying it back to MyStaff, if stuff like Progression/Regression are still screwed up, then the MyStaff mechanics -- even if well-executed in and of themselves -- could make things even more screwy, and if the MyStaff mechanics are out of whack or OP too, then it could be total chaos. Like, I hope you can't hire an A+ Shot Doctor and have Ben Simmons in the 3pt Contest after a year or two.
I don't expect that current/last gen will have all this stuff, but I wouldn't half-mind just watching from afar to see how well these new features are working. I know that sounds sours-grapesy, and indeed if current/last gen had all this, I'd love having something new to tinker with, but for those of us who find a balance we like and then start progressing through actual seasons & offseasons, adding more to the progression/regression mix is scary!
While I love the staff additions, I will admit that I’m very underwhelmed with this blog.
Fine tuning is great, but I was really hoping for some presentation elements to really be at the forefront of improvement.
I’ll still spend 85% of my time in MyNBA , but damn I set myself up for failure by expecting more.

I wonder if the spreadsheets include player awards. Ever since 2k16 they really cut down on award history details.
In 2k16 we had Finals Mvp's, Scoring leaders, assist leaders, rebound readers all included in award histories. After 2k16 none of those were included in award histories.
If they add that stuff back I'll be impressed
    Cyrus09
Didn't they clearly communicate that it will come back this year, when the schedule is back to normal? I don't feel like that would be worth a announcement.
I like the coaching staff update, but it would be great if they would add more real coaches so it makes more fun to manage the coaching staffs. In the end you always rotate the same assistant coaches to head coaching job every save game.

Just to be clear, are you assuming that it is in or that it isn't in?

I just hope the play in tournament wasn't mentioned because it is a given to be in the game this year. But all in all what they talked about is cool.

As long as they give us thr option to turn it off in rule changes, I'm fine. Never thought that the basic nba season needs to be overly complicated

Kind of underwhelmed...was looking forward to some sort of offseason tweaks & immersion for the Draft & Free Agency.
I do like the upgrades to MyStaff, but I've never liked the progression system 2K uses...still doesn't look appealing to me but we'll see.
Still waiting for my dream feature being the inclusion of FIBA/Olympics during the offseason.
Hopefully 'Start Today' with custom rosters makes a return!
    Another year :(

Looks like 10 now from the blog.
Seems like the mode will be completely unchanged outside of the staff features? I’ll be amazed if all of these added variables don’t further break the already dysfunctional AI/simulation engine that has been plaguing MyNBA/MyLEAGUE for years now. Fingers crossed they fixed these issues and made sure all these new variables work as intended, but it sounds like a pipe-dream.
And I guess any hope for NFL 2K5-style halftime and weekly wrap-up shows can be put to rest.

I agree, we can only wait and hope that there aren't the usual problems
Well, since hiring coaches seemed like it did nothing before, and frankly I wasn’t that concerned with it (because, well you are kinda the coach as you play. Not a text sim), I’m a little at odds over how much I care about it.
Hopefully injuries are more interesting at least.

I guess no changes were made with the uniform and arena editor. That has been bland for the past 5 years. I really hope that we can create a secondary court, add logos anywhere on the court, add more than 10 images on the jersey and have more stadium selections.
I hope there is a part 2 to the blog. Fingers crossed for Preseason, coach mode, schedule, editor ai initiated 3 way trades ,sign and trades, and buyouts.

    Buyouts still don’t exist?!
I like the new Staff features but none of this feels truly revolutionary.
Remember when they added League Expansion and Relocation? Or League Meetings/Rules Changes? I'm just not seeing the same innovating features that we were getting a couple years ago.
The entire draft/scouting process needs a huge revamp in 2k23. Here are some ideas:

    • They should let us scout players years in advance to when they're even in college. Team's knew about Zion years before he was even at Duke. It should be the same in 2k. Allow us to prepare and stock up on picks for a phenom coming a couple years down the line.
    • Players should dynamically declare for the draft or choose to stay in school for another year.
    • I want to know who won March Madness. Let me see the entire bracket+stats.
    • Pre-Draft workouts should be playable.
    • Players shouldn't have their potential revealed until after their first season or until they reach a certain number of minutes played. This would add a cool element of fog of war.

Also, League News also needs a big refresh. The generic tweets get old quick. I want to see the big storylines like we see every year in real life. Whether it be teammate drama, a Superstar requesting a trade, or a head coach losing the locker room, I want to see it all in 2k. Even fake screenshots of in game action would be cool to see. This is something that even Madden has had.

    Will coaches have W-L records?

Records and the ability to edit coach's names (again) was all I asked for and they gave us this. I mean, if injuries are a thing now and morale actually works it could be cool, I guess.
I was really hoping for some new tendencies for the cpu because all I've seen (in the limited leaked footage) was the same mindless (forced) driving when attacking the rim and the same poor (also forced) shoot selection when finishing at the rim.
The cpu needs to be more intelligent when choosing when to drive, when/how to retreat from a drive
(which usually leads to bad contested close shots or blocked floaters (why take a low arcing floter so close? Kinda defeats the purpose of a floter IMO),
when to attack out of a sizeup (no tendencies for the cpu to use any of the cool looking player specific sizeup) sinstead of spamming a sizeup and not knowing to drive when space is created from one,
When/how to go around a defender, taking better angles to the rim, when to pass out of a drive and when to stay aggressive on a drive.
Before any new additions to the MyNba franchise mode they need to get the core cpu gameplay right because nothing is going to matter off court if all the on court gamplay is easy, uninteresting, repetitive and low IQ basketball.

I was hoping for more tendencies as well but they still might be a few they just didn’t touch on or say.
However, a lot of the things you touched on above there are tendencies for. Like the drive and kick, aggressiveness on attacks and finish strong, as well as lowering contested bad shots and quick triggers. Has been for years. A couple no though. My main concern is if ACE overrides the tendency edits like they have the last 3 years though. Things like the close shots you touched on or the behind the back out of triple threat, or even dribble moves on attacks when zeroed out.
But fingers crossed we get some more off ball iq tendencies (read screens), etc…
Did not like this blog at all. I’ve never really cared to get too deep into the staff stuff besides the main positions. Thought we’d heard about a lot more other things. This is good for people that’s really into this though.

Badges now for coaches? A "sleep doctor"? Just stop. Who has time for all this? Even 21 years ago as a young man who was part time employed, I didn't have time for all this. I sim all this stuff. But since they felt the need to add this extra stuff, what purpose does it serve? Is it going to yield the same results (team/individual performance) as if you just sim it?
Between not releasing any gameplay by this point and sleep doctors being the big news of the week, I've got a feeling this version may be the biggest form of "lipstick on a pig" that we've seen so far....Hope I'm wrong though.
I agree. MyNBA/GM/League has added a lot of features over the years that simply don't affect much at all. One of the biggest issues is the commentary is super stale and not dynamic enough in MyNBA. It feels like you are playing a Play Now game. In year 2-3 there's no real difference in the league or things mentioned.
Instead of adding new "sim" features get the things that you have to work better and not have bugs. How much do the letter grades of the staff actually affect the on court product? I'd be willing to bet not much.
How is the free agency and team building logic? Hasn't been good in almost forever. The player valuation system is still terrible. If I do a trade finder for say an Anthony Davis I may get an offer back for a 1st round pick and Clint Capela.

Trade logic is terrible. FA signing is terrible. Commentary is stale. Commentators are stale at this rate. This myriad of new coaching options I normally wouldn't care about, but its the fact 2K is obviously intentionally not showing gameplay, in lieu of some BS about new coaching options and we're a day away from release. Its utter nonsense. Not that they're necessarily trying to hide anything, I'm sure the game will still be enjoyable. It's just to me it's the fact someone literally looked at this blog option and said "lets go with coaching change ups instead of showing off some new gameplay". I've excused this laziness for years and now I'm just kind of getting fed up. This company has really become as bad as EA with Madden franchise. Its stuff like this that should remind us all as to why we as consumers need a successful NBA Live or other basketball franchise to put 2K on their heels. They've getting lazier and complacent between gameplay changes, updating consumers with information and advertising.

Exactly. Who tf asked for all this. No new halftime shows? Tickers? ANYTHING immersive to the actual MyNBA GAMEPLAY aspect? They keep wasting time with complete non sequiturs. I want to play from the perspective of PLAYERS with a very basic GM control. They seem to have given nothing in that regard.

Let's be real here. Less than 48 hours to the release of the game, no videos showing all of that information, and reviews of all the games that will be release on that day except NBA 2k22. I think we are going to get anything but an average game.
Play in tournament kinda sucks IMO. Gives players less incentive than ever to play/work hard to get great records during the year. Already we have the laziest/most spoiled league in history. Breaks just for the sake of it, “load management,” sitting out games, lower minutes, softer rules yet still record high injuries due clearly to poor conditioning regimens. League babies these dudes as it is. I don’t see any teams just wanting to win regular season games to have a great record. Home court advantage barely means anything to them anymore. Now they could just lob up threes all day and play soft all season as long as they get top 10.
    AceDawg5

Anyways, as far as my opinion... Its decent, but I was hoping for more. The staff overhaul should be amazing, and conditional coaching is SUPER underrated. But I want full G-League control, I want pre-season. I want the function of the mode to be overhauled by making it a year-round day-by-day type of mode instead of off-season stages and division rounds. Make the entire mode day-by-day so you can have the lottery during the playoffs. Give us more immersion with a score ticker during games. Stuff like that can go such a long way.
What I do like though, is it seems like 2K is trying to make this the console, playable in-game basketball version of Football Manager.

I feel you on that, but I just personally wanted it in the game for immersion and realistic purposes . However, I still believe that it makes it competitive because the 10-12 spots are competitive anyways because of the fact that there’s a chance (no matter how slim) of making the playoffs.

Play-In Tournament seems to be in the spot the G-League option used to be in. I hope that's still implemented, even though the sim stats were pretty bad. This mode would be so much better if sim stats were just a bit more realistic.

This the opposite it gives players more incentive to have a better team record and make the top 6 so they don’t have to be in the play in and risk losing a playoff spot because of one or two games

Guess it can go two ways. It essentially gives a 10 seed team a chance to go to the finals. Smart players will want to avoid the play in, at the same time some players can rest on their laurels knowing they still have a shot even if they have a terrible record.
This also weeds out the teams that really shouldn’t be in the playoffs to begin with sometimes as well because every year we have teams and be like “ how did they even get in “ if you’re hungry enough you will fight to stay in the playoffs. 3 of the 6 play in games were really good this pass year and the other 3 were bad but if you go look at those teams they were missing a lot of key players during the play in because of the injuries .

This here. MyNBA should be a living breathing world with tons to do, not an endless sea of spreadsheets. In MyCareer we can do team practices everyday if we want. Let us play or skip/toggle off team practice if we want. The player training stuff has been in a few years now and I still dont know how to use it.
The Draft is the most interesting time of the offseason and the combine is spreadsheets. We have the entire Draft combine in MyCareer. Let us run players through drills or play/watch a game to see if a prospect jumps out to us. You cant do that now with endless text. This is part of the reason why the draft lacks intrigue. We dont know how the players look on the court. Again, copy the draft from MyCareer.
I'd like to see former players become more than just coaches in this new MyStaff. Former players should randomly occupy every role from Governor (such a dumb title) down to trainers. I have faith in Leftos and the MyNBA devs over the years so I'll take the L this year. According to my PS5 profile I put in 464 hours in 2K21 so I obviously enjoy the game and mode.

Actually, there’s been some updates in presentation. Small but noticeable. Also, during the halftime show in MyNBA, there was an “Around the League” segment showing the scores of the other games that are playing as the same time as you are. I thought that was neat. Reminded me of 2K11.

Playable training/drills to increase attributes and earn badges
    Sideline interviews for created players

Just to name a few. This blog was so boring and weak, just calling it like I see it.

If 2k21 at least was a proper alternative. But 2k21 in my opinion is the worst 2k that I've ever played on PC (so since 2k9) gameplaywise.... And older 2ks (2k20 and prior) don't have online connection anymore. Only thing I play is online league with my community...
So without starting a new thread, what else was changed for NEXT GEN MY NBA besides the coaching carousel and halftime show?
Does anyone know if the off season still plays out the same way with no changes?

All of this re: the draft. We absolutely need the option to play through the combine and to scout years ahead. This would make the game so much more enjoyable. Drafting is such an essential part of building a franchise and it just feels like a tack-on right now, especially with 2K's automated classes.
Some things I'd add to your draft wishlist:
    - You should have a way to project what year a guy is going to the draft, or how likely a guy is to go pro. A Zion level prospect is a >99% chance of going his first eligible year, but a guy like Tre Jones might be 90% and end up returning for a second year.
    - Players should dynamically rise + fall as they age through the draft process. Right now a draft class is just a guy with static attributes, but they don't get better or worse throughout the season of scouting. With a multi-year pool of players, guys could rise rapidly in their last year of HS (think Collin Sexton) or blow up in college (think Ja Morant), or a top HS prospect could bust in college. Imagine seeing a blue chip HS prospect who was a 95% chance to go out his freshman year end up sitting in the prospect pool for four years of college because he flamed out. It would add such a level of intrigue & realism to the process!
    - More in-depth stats for draftees. OOTP has incredibly detailed stats for college/HS players, right down to estimating their WAR. 2K could absolutely do this.
    - At the end result, draft classes should adjust for age. In real life, most of the draft is underclassmen but in 2K you have way too many 22-24 year olds.
I was honestly shocked to read this Courtside Report and not see anything about improving the draft or free agency. I understand that building a staff is part of building your franchise, but the players matter more and the idea of roster building is just totally left aside.
I stopped buying the game a few years ago because the GM modes just didn't scratch the itch anymore. I tried em out on Ultimate Pass and always ended up disappointed. I always check on the updates because I really want a great NBA franchise mode experience and would gladly pay for it. They could definitely lure me back with fixes to the draft & transactions. Fixing trade & FA logic seems like a huge undertaking and the ways to do it are above my pay grade, but the draft ones don't seem as hard to implement and that would definitely get me interested.
