NBA 2K21 Trailer - Everything is Game (Current-Gen)

2K has just released their NBA 2K21 gameplay trailer for current-gen consoles, featuring clips of many of the league’s brightest stars, buzzer beaters, high-flying dunks, blocks and more. If you spot something special, let us know in the comments!

NBA 2K21 promises extensive improvements across the board and deep, varied game modes, but those details don’t arrive today. With launch day quickly approaching, many more gameplay-related announcements are set to arrive in the upcoming weeks ahead, including details for MyTEAM and MyCAREER.

NBA 2K21 releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC and Google Stadia on September 4. NBA 2K21 will also be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, as a launch title this holiday.

This year, NBA 2K21 will offer two editions of the game on digital and physical formats – standard and a special Mamba Forever Edition. NBA 2K21 will be available for $59.99 on current-generation platforms; the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X version of NBA 2K21 will be available for $69.99.

NBA 2K21 Mamba Forever Edition will be available for $99.99 for both current and next-generation platforms. It includes dual-access where purchasing Mamba Forever Edition on either current or next-generation platforms, provides a copy of the standard edition game on the other generation at no additional cost, within the same console generation. A full breakdown of pre-order details is available at https://nba.2k.com/.

  1. Apparently Trae Young will have to go full Melo and cover every single part of his body with acessories so the 2k devs will notice hes been wearing a sleeve and 3/4 pants for TWO YEARS now. And, you know, he was an All Star Game starter. Its not like hes a 2 Way player.
I didn't expect the graphics to change at all for current gen, but how do some players (e.g. Jaylen Brown) have their old hairstyles before they were updated in 20? How does that even happen? Besides that, it's cool to see college returning. Should be interesting to see what changes are made to each game mode.
LOL bro I saw this on YouTube and though someone made a 2K20 mix (calling it 2K21 with updated rosters)
Lucky they making a next gen ....cause if THIS was it ....
Cool. Looks nice...sadly, the things i'm looking for are more along the lines of fixing the play-call bug and giving us the option for the previous play-call menu, fixing Transition and Help Defense, PNO Redesign, a No Switching option on D, Calling plays in timeouts and putting plays on repeat...
That's what will determine if I purchase 2K21. So hopefully that's the stuff we see more of going forward.
I'm probably not touching current gen while I wait for the PS5 version, but nice to see they're seemingly making changes to the neighborhood (neighborhoods?) and heading back to college in MyCareer.
If you're an NBA only player, there's no need to buy this game. *The schedules haven't been made, hell, they haven't even had a draft. * I'm pretty sure the current season will still be going on whenever this game releases so it will be an easy decision for me to wait for next gen.
The ".5" comments might ACTUALLY have legitimacy this year (from a visual standpoint), but I expect that with next gen coming.
Didn't expect much from the trailer...and won't draw many conclusions from it.
My hope is we get something like last gen 2k14, which ended up being a really refined version of the game, and is very underrated. Probably in my top 2-3 overall.
I feel like there wasn't a single updated player model or new animation in that whole trailer lol. Dame's shot didn't look anything like his real shot either which is disappointing.

Lol, if you leave it up to Agent and the “Greens Only” crowd, that shot by Lillard was a complete brick since it didn’t green.
No, it appeared to be within the "green window" (you see the light flash at the end) it just looks like the green color aesthetic has been removed.

I'm bothered by Lillard shooting, releasing the ball above his head.

yep that and tatums shot stood out to me. if they cant get the releases right on all stars i can only imagine role players.

What Books like to call "a gameplay year" and I agree.

No reason to buy this. By the time the real offseason happens, next gen version will be out.

    The obvious reasons are:
    1. If you simply don't plan to get a next gen console immediately (which is likely still a ton of people).
    2. If you feel like you absolutely must stock up as much VC as possible ahead of the next-gen release.
    Yeah...THAT Guy

Me too as well. I wondered how they would approach MyCareer for Current gen this year. Being that next gen is "built from ground up" wonder if they will have it like 2k14 and have two different experiences. Since the progress won't transfer over, I expect it to be different experiences for next gen and current gen. But it is good to see them have real college teams. I don't expect them to go all out on cinematics. Unless It was done prior to pandemic, it wouldve been hard to do all the cinematic story lines..
I still don't see much benefits investing time in current gen MyPlayer unless you don't plan on upgrading to next gen this year. Unleas you're a person who spends miney on VC, no point on investing time on current gen. You don't have time grind on current gen if you are getting next gen at launch.
... and when I thought it could not get worse with the shooting bar/indicator of the Nba2k20... Yes!!! It's even worse and more arcade in 2k21...
    I am done!

Also, if you plan to get it on PC and mod it.
This game still.looks good graphically, but man I really had to come to OS to make sure this wasn't a fan made trailer lol.
Definitely looking forward to NBA2K21 on next gen consoles with everything going on with the actual NBA season currently it seems like it will be released at the perfect time later on this year.

Yeah, not buying it, first time in the last 10 years that I haven't preordered 2k. Will see what the next gen has to offer. CYA
I don't envy 2K's current gen position this year.
With no draft, the current season still on-going, no new jerseys, logos, or courts, and with a next gen release following closely behind, there seems to be a real lack of selling points.
I'll hold out final judgment until all news is released, I just find myself doubtful at the moment that the current gen's going to unveil anything that's going to draw me in to an opening day purchase.

Yep thats me. Even if its basically 2k20.5, it’s worth it in order to get any updates (rookie face scans, jerseys, Start Today when that becomes a thing again, etc) over the course of the year, even if its not all there at launch. If the game mechanics are basically the same, then rosters / settings from 2k20 ought to port over well too.
    MarkWilliam
Also, if you plan to get it on PC and mod it.

This is my first year paying attention to modding (from afar, Im on Switch not PC), so maybe they say this every year, but it sounds like a lot of folks might just stay on 2k20 since theres such a robust library of mods this year (more than usual?). If 2k21 = 2k20.5, then its almost pointless to buy because you can basically get that with mods that already exist (plus already refined rosters, draft classes, etc).
Man I'm having a BLAST playing 2K21 already in the bubble (PC mod)
Those modders have made something beautiful which will sustain me until next gen comes for the holidays!
Dame did a step back jumper and his defender just took one slow step forward at the start of Dames animation and was in his chest. Reacting to buttons again and not movement
Dame does a step back jumper in real life, you’re not reading it at the start and waddling into him
I doubt me getting this version. To be honest I haven't really cared for the last 3 years or so of 2K. 2k17 was the last decent one in my book.* The MyCareer details are probably gonna have to blow me away to generate an interest. I'm more of a MyLeague guy but I have no interest in playing MyLeague if I'm going to see things like green splashes beneath the feet and the same reoccurring MyLeague bugs year after year.*
I'm not pre-ordering but I am keeping an eye out. There's a possibliity I could get it considering I'm probably not getting into next gen until The Show 21* but I doubt it. I've already been pulling some older basketball titles out of storage and even have ordered a couple old ones I used to have and I've been enjoying those.*

Looks the same tbh. Please fix the bugs and glitches with the game

Ok....how long does EA have the rights to MSG? Is it lifetime or what? 2k is the sole NBA BBall game and not seeing the worlds most famous arena bugs me. They should be able to afford MSG by now with all the VC money going to them.
Unless I missed something, 2K avoided putting the September 4 release date in this trailer, despite that date being less than a month from now.
I still don’t think they are fully committed to releasing this game at the start of September. Nor should they.
I see UCLA and Florida so I'm glad licensed colleges are back in some capacity. Ill have some fun with that. Other than that though, theres not much to get excited about. I already preordered so I'm gonna enjoy current gen for what its worth and hopefully be wowed by next gen.

That was a miserably unimpressive trailer. Obviously at this point there isn’t going to be any graphics improvements but the game looks identical to 2K20. Every character model looked exactly the same from facial appearances to body type.
And then everyone moved the same as last year’s game and the shots are still way off (i.e., Tatum and Lillard’s jumpshots). This is 2K20 with updated rosters and that’s a disappointment.
This is why I don't see the point in anyone buying current gen. Next gen is the only way you'll get a substantial upgrade of anything. I'm just waiting for a trailer and details to drop for it to confirm my purchase.

The date is all over their social media trailer announcement: https://twitter.com/NBA2K/status/1291373542504726529

Well of course the social media team is going to proceed with the current date. If they didn't, it would be obvious that there’s a delay and it would be strange for 2K to not come right out and say it.
I’m reading between the lines. 2K marketing could have put the release date in the video, they made a deliberate choice not to. Why? You can change the release date in the vid description later, you can send out tweets with a new release date later, but you can’t change the video later. Once it’s up, it’s locked.
If there was no doubt internally that 2k21 would release on Sept 4, less than a month from now, then they would have put the release date in the trailer. Instead, it’s just “pre-order today”. That’s like the recent Tenet trailer saying “coming to theaters” while WB was still saying they would release the film in August.

Honestly, makes no sense to release any later even with the season the way it is. Next gen is coming and not only do they have to focus on/prioritize that, but it would eat into sales of current gen because most would just rather wait once they see next gen.

Exactly. They probably also want to maintain that September release date going forward and not fracture the development cycle just because of this season alone.
Some of this talk around current gen release date is baseless.

Do you think it’s worth considering that, should the game release on current gen on Sept 4, sales would decrease from usual because we will be in the middle of the playoffs, roughly 2 months from having updated rosters, and no idea what the schedule will look like? I don’t see the incentive to upgrade from 2k20 in September, beyond “shiny new toy”.
Also, if a delay means more people wait until next gen, which costs $10 more, wouldn’t that be beneficial to 2K, as compared to more people buying current gen for $60 and getting the free upgrade valued at $10?
Edit: M29a, I don’t see why holding a finished game back two months would impact the general development cycle...

    Maybe they delay both ??
Let current gen release after this season is done and closer to the start of next season and then release nextgen at the start or just shortly after the start of next season........
And you let 2k20 push a little longer.
It’s not that crazy of an idea.

It is when you think at it from a business standpoint. This is a company that has fiscal quarters and they have goals for each based upon what they're releasing. 2k21 current gen has to release before next gen and they're not going to push them back because they season got delayed. If you don't believe me, look at 2k12. They basically based the entire marketing on that game around their legend mode. It worked wonders for them not only because of the mode but the league had the lockout and didn't start until Xmas just like this year will be. Unlike 2012 though, new consoles are releasing probably in November, and they'll want to be a launch title to maximize sells on the hardware at launch (for example tons of people bought a PS4 to play 2k14 after that OMG trailer).
The draft and FA will be over at that point so next gen will launch with the consoles truly showing a "new game." Current gen can get a roster update in late October with the new rosters/rookies like 2k12 did.

yes, this year is the best we had for mods since nba 2k14. its because There are some great modders that are now able deconstruct the game files. thats why we have great things like the bubble Mod.

Yeah...I decided not to even bother with current gen. Due to COVID-19, it really has no real selling point for those people waiting for next-gen. Hell, it really doesn't have any real selling point for current-gen people unless you're just dying to try the new "neighborhood".
Well if i or better said we (my whole League community deals with that Problem) dont have to spent 3-4 hours just to complete one 4x10 min game, then I am fine.... definitely wont Play 2k20 for another year. stabilitywise, 2k20 was by far the worst we ever had.

I just hope the greens for the AIs are gone in both current gen and next gen.

completely ruined myleague for me this year especially since I play on RP%
As much as we hype up next gen. With 2k being 2k I still expect the launch for next gen to be disastrous. Some way somehow they're going to screw up. Server issues, characters getting deleted, etc. But cranked up to x100.
I'll probably be grabbing current gen for the 100k VC and grinding the other game modes besides MyPlayer so I can carry all that VC over to next gen. I realize that there's not a lot of updates coming, but I'd rather work towards the new release.
I got a feeling this might be a more polished version of the last two games and that might be fine by me for a few months. I enjoyed 2k14 on 360 a lot it fixed a lot of stuff from 13 and was a good hold over game . Could be a sleeper solid game hopefully
in all honesty I see a few people having issues with the new shot meter but for me personally I love it....
I am not big on the green releases especially for the AI I don't wish it away because the park guys seem to love it, so if they get to have it that would be fine, but I would prefer if Sim modes it's either not there or can be turned off at the very least
I’ll keep waiting for actual gameplay, 2k highlight reels are completely useless for gaging that.
Need to see foot planting and physics that make sense.

Same. Im a Real% guy and probably will remain so, but im going to give this a shot as it seems like itll be less necessary to learn everyones shot releases. I get that some people like the challenge of having to learn them, but to me its too much of a pain in myleague when youre playing with so many guys, making trades, etc

The addition of AI greens was the dumbest thing 2K has added possibly ever IMO.
I have ZERO understanding why that's in there and what the thought process could've possibly been as to how it's a good idea.
I think Covid probably screwed up 2k21 for current gen. The crunch to release it on time is pretty well known and to lose possibly a month or more due to the coronavirus probably had them scrap a ton. Maybe they should have delayed the release until after the season. I mean the game used to come out in October so it isn't unheard of.

Yes, the option to turn it off seems so basic and obvious an option to include.
What is the logical response by 2K (Mike or whoever) as to why AI green releases was a good idea? (Rhetorical - I'll never agree with it anyway).

What ive read is that its for online people. I dont play pvp but apparently people online like to know when their teammates or opponents are actually greening
Had to mute it for starters. That 'music' was enough to make my ears bleed, Christ.
Only good part was seeing Kobe, the rest....meh, same old.
Will stick with my custom retro rosters until next gen.....maybe.

That's what Mike said directly I believe.
The global green release flash may be gone (or optional) in 2K21.
Arguing about its existence in 2K20 may be moot at this point. We'll just have to wait and see.

It has been my biggest pet peeve about this years game. I don’t see a reason for it to be in the game at ALL. Rather it’s playing with CPU players or with and against human players.
From what I’ve noticed on Twitter, each kid that gets upset that I say it should be removed and I ask why they need that? They all say “Because people fake green”. When I first heard it, I said, “what is that?”. So I guess it’s teammates saying they’re missing greens (which makes no sense because greens is automatic) or some say they greened but is lying about it which I understand because I had a friend that would play around like that.
The thing is though. Those aren’t good reasons at all. Just because people lie about these things, how is that affecting you so badly? All you have to do is simply watch and see if the ball goes in or not like in real life. It’s just so crazy to me someone can shoot a potential GW shot and we all know it’s going in before it gets to the rim. One of the dumbest decisions 2K has made. I would even settle if they showed the release AFTER the ball either goes in or misses.

Live is NOT competition to 2K. Those years are over.

Well, if I can spend 1 hour to play (and finish!) one game without having to first do workarounds for 2129319022 bugs (at the start of every game, pause and go to coach settings. change ace to off, team communications to on. then take a timeout so that your matchup changes actually take effect,...) and retry 5 times because of server disconnects or back to desktop crashs, making it 5-6 hours for one game, then I would rather play NBA live then NBA 2k, even if it means that gameplay is a big step back.
