NBA 2K21 Introduces The City For Next-Gen Consoles - This is Literally Park and Neighborhood on Steroids - Affiliations Return

2K has given us their NBA 2K21 next-gen gameplay trailer, along with part 1, part 2 and part 3 of their next-gen gameplay blogs. After that, they gave us details on the WNBA MyPLAYER experience, featuring a fully customizable WNBA Franchise Mode, Online Leagues and much more.

Today it’s all about The City. The park and neighborhood on steroids.

Erick Boenisch, Executive Producer at Visual Concepts is back again, for the latest Courtside Report, to give us all the details.

We’re roughly a week out from the release of NBA 2K21 for the next-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms. I can’t believe it is basically already here! As I noted in the last Courtside Report I wrote, it has been an incredibly unique year for all of us here at VC, as it has been for many of our friends in the entire video games industry. To be in this position to kick off a whole new generation of NBA 2K games, alongside the next-gen console launches, speaks to the team’s unassailable hard work and dedication to make NBA 2K21 the best experience possible. My endless thanks goes out to the entire team at Visual Concepts!

So far in these Courtside Reports, we’ve talked about next-gen gameplay and all the innovations we’re bringing to player animation, collision, AI behavior, and so much more. The graphics…we’ve all seen the graphics! We’ve also introduced all-new WNBA experiences – The W, The W Online, and MyWNBA – that bring long-awaited gameplay modes to the women’s game in NBA 2K. And now, as you’ve undoubtedly already seen from the trailer, the team here at Visual Concepts is incredibly proud to present…The City!

But first, a little bit of history.

When we made NBA 2K14 for what was then the new, next-gen gaming consoles, we introduced “The Park.” The vision was to create a competitive online basketball environment that allowed our quickly growing community of NBA 2K fans to compete against each other outside of the authentic NBA experience. This meant allowing NBA 2K players to take their custom MyPLAYERs and bring them into a whole new place where you can compete with friends and complete strangers. Just like walking onto an outdoor court to run a half-court game or waiting for 5s at your local rec center, the Park was our version of playing pick-up basketball and taking part in its unique, competitive vibe.

Over the past seven years, it has evolved and expanded with features that enriched the online experience at every stop. The Park experience quickly grew into The Neighborhood as the NBA 2K community itself flourished, and it’s been our most popular feature over the years. We’re very proud about what we were able to build in the past and are astonished every day by the competition and creativity that our fans demonstrate in our world.

With all this said, I am proud to be the very first to welcome you to…

THE CITY

Here is The City at a quick glance: Imagine a map that is many, many times larger than previous Neighborhoods. A design that resembles a modern metropolis, complete with towering skyscrapers, sprawling plazas, and a city center. Oh, and it houses four distinct boroughs that are controlled by four rival Affiliations. And with that, I’m incredibly proud to announce that Affiliations are BACK! I’ll go into more details on Affiliations a little further below. For now, let’s keep painting the picture of what The City truly is.

The City is our most ambitious execution of a virtual basketball community…ever. The sheer amount and variety of buildings and basketball courts that we were able to create and fit into the map still amazes me to this day!

Let’s talk about the core components of The City and their functions:

  • Rookieville - Sitting just off the water’s edge on the southern side of The City lies the Rookieville docks. Rookieville is exactly what it sounds like; this is where your NBA 2K21 City journey will begin. MyPLAYERs looking to dive into The City and all that it has to offer must first prove their skills amongst other rookie MyPLAYERs in this isolated cluster of basketball courts. Meet the requisite actions in Rookieville, and the gates of The City will open before you. Let’s find out what awaits you on the other side…
  • Boroughs – As I noted above, Affiliations make their long-awaited return in NBA 2K21. Each has a dedicated space in the North, South, East, and West sections of The City that we refer to as boroughs. Each borough has its own vibe and collection of basketball courts – decked out in the Affiliations logos and colors. Additionally, each Affiliation area houses a unique Warehouse basketball court, where new MyPLAYER progression features await. More on this below!
  • Event Center - The heart of The City is the brand new Event Center, shining like a bright beacon, no matter which borough you view it from. Equally bright and shiny are the many different interiors of this futuristic monolith, where the court floors and walls are lined with dynamic LED screens and lighting elements that change the tone and vibe of the setting. All new and returning Events will be held inside the Event Center, and special intra-Affiliation competitions will take place here as well.
  • Garage Hoops - Exploration is a major part of experiencing The City. Sprinkled around The City, you will find basketball hoops attached to the side of some buildings – if you look close enough. If you happen to see one, try pulling out your basketball and shooting some hoops with it. If another player passes by and sees you shooting, they will have the ability to step on the court and shoot with you. From there you will have the option to quickly and seamlessly launch into 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, HORSE, and many other game types. Its simplicity is its strong point. And as an added bonus, there are large VC multipliers you can earn on these courts each day for your first five games played! This is a great place to start your day off as you warm up for the main event at your affiliation’s courts.
  • People of The City - Continuing on with the theme of exploration, scattered throughout The City are quest/objective giving NPCs. If you’ve ever played any RPG experiences, you’ll have no problem spotting them; they will be the people with colored exclamation points above their heads. Every 4-6 weeks, new quests/objectives will be added to our People of The City, such that you will find yourself with new things to do all year long.
    • Generally speaking, there are two lines of quests. The first is a series of single player 3v3 games you will be challenged with in the Warehouses found in the court area of each affiliation. Some of these can be pretty challenging as you’ll be facing off against some of the best players to ever lace up a pair of basketball shoes. The insides of the Warehouses are actually very cool. Astute players who enjoyed NBA 2K20’s Neighborhood will appreciate the throwback efforts within them! The other line of quests will encourage you to get out and play games in The City, and reward you for doing so. Simple as that. Complete all of the quests and you will earn some unique clothing items/accessories that are not sold in stores. Get out there and ball, my friends!
  • Gatorade Training Facility - The mecca of MyPLAYER physical training gets a makeover on multiple levels – literally. The facility has now expanded to two floors, where on the first floor, MyPLAYERs will find their usual array of training equipment that’ll help beef up their abilities. The second floor houses a great new feature in The City: Rental Courts. Want an uninterrupted run of games with your friends or other ballers you just met? Rent a court in the Gatorade Training Facility and play games however you want!
  • Special Courts – There are a couple full-sized (one 4v4, the other 5v5) courts available in The City. These are non-affiliated courts that our team created to pay tribute to two things we are very passionate about. One of these courts was built to commemorate and celebrate the late Kobe Bryant. The surface is textured beautifully with Kobe’s signature snakeskin design, and his numbers 8 and 24 mark the restricted areas at the opposite ends of the court. And overlooking the grounds is a gigantic mural of an iconic Kobe moment, where he stood triumphantly on the scorer’s table as he celebrated his 5th NBA championship. I know you all are picturing the pose.
    • What you are thinking is correct; and it is immortalized right here in NBA 2K21’s The City. This is a location where you will find me playing, as I celebrate my Laker and Kobe fandom!
  • Fire Ball – Holding court in The City is going to come with an air of prestige in the next-gen version of NBA 2K21. On occasion, you will see a Fire Ball being used on the courts…yes, literally A BALL THAT IS ON FIRE! When your team wins 10 games in a row on Affiliation courts, the ball used in your game will immediately catch on fire and stay lit until you lose. Expect crowds to gather around your court when this happens! You already know that everyone seeing the fire ball will be like a bat signal for the best ballers to start lining up to dethrone your reign. Challenge extended!
  • Pink Diamond Plaza - One of my favorite basketball court designs in the next-gen version of NBA 2K21 sits atop Pink Diamond Plaza, located right in the heart of The City. Decked out in fluorescent lights and with music orchestrated by a resident DJ, Pink Diamond Plaza hosts the entirety of the MyTEAM Triple Threat Online experience. Give it a look and prepare to be impressed!
  • Apparel Stores – While some of your favorite shops from the old Neighborhoods will be returning, The City has been built to feature an even wider variety of apparel locations for you to express your style. Some of our closest brand partners will be receiving a dedicated space within our plaza of shops. All your favorites, including Nike, Jordan Brand, adidas, Under Armour, Puma, and many more can be found in the City. For me, two of my favorite new stores are Alter Ego and Drip Brothers; you can get some fun items in those two! Be on the lookout for all of the new self-expression items we will have available at launch and beyond!

AFFILIATIONS

The City is big. The return of Affiliations, however, may be just as big – if not bigger. For some years now, one of the most requested features from the NBA 2K community has been Affiliation-based gameplay. Naturally, we’re incredibly excited to bring it back in a meaningful way that offers competitive depth to the City. This is something we have wanted to do for a number of years now, and the power of the next-gen consoles finally affords us the opportunity to see our vision through.

Let’s start with the basics. There are four Affiliations in The City:

  • North Side Knights
  • South City Vipers
  • Beasts of the East
  • Western Wildcats

Each has their own dedicated borough and set of Affiliation courts within The City. Rep up to Pro 1 by winning a few games in Rookieville, and you’ll be assigned to one of these four rival factions. If you didn’t land in your Affiliation of choice, you can always head to City Hall of the Affiliation you are interested in joining and file a transfer request. The penalty for changing your Affiliation is your Rep level will reset all the way down to Pro 1 (what you had when you graduated from Rookieville); I would encourage you to think long and hard before abandoning your team to jump ship!

So, who will run The City? At the core of Affiliations gameplay is rivalry and competition. It’s us vs. them. Who will be the best? We’ve designed this experience to be an ever-present grapple amongst the Knights, Vipers, Beasts, and Wildcats for bragging rights within The City. Here is what’s in-play as you represent your Affiliation:

  • Player Rep – Playing on your own Affiliation’s courts has its advantages; specifically, you can only achieve your full Player Rep by balling on your home court. Playing on the courts of your rival Affiliations will earn you much less rep per game played. Leveling up and strengthening your MyPLAYER will be very key for what is to come…
  • Rival Day Conquest - The final two weeks of every Mayor term (more on this below!) will feature the culmination of a series of events to crown which Affiliation runs The City. Rival Day Conquest is a key event where all rep-earning restrictions are removed from The City and you are encouraged to invade every other borough with your teammates and take hold of the courts. Keep a close eye on the leaderboard located in each court area; at the end of Rival Day Conquest, the four Affiliations will be ranked by score and seeded for the culmination of the season, the Rival Day Championship.
  • Rival Day Championship - Taking place in the Event Center, this is the final piece of the puzzle in confirming your Affiliation as the true champions of The City. Battle head-to-head with teams from other Affiliations as you engage in this culminating experience. For the Affiliation that comes out on top of this head-to-head championship, the spoils of The City await you. You’ll be able to head to your Affiliations City Hall and pick up your winner’s check (enjoy the free VC!), but the real prize is your Mayor will also be able to deck out your entire borough and make your Affiliation the envy of The City.

This is now the second time I’ve mentioned the concept of the Mayors. Let’s dive in and take a closer look at what a Mayor is, and what they do for you…

MAYORS

A brand new dynamic we’re introducing as part of The City are…Mayors! Each Affiliation will be represented by a Mayor; they will be very influential in your day-to-day experience within The City. So what is a Mayor, and what do they do? And how do they become elected?

Let’s go over their responsibilities. Mayors are responsible for:

  • Affiliation Videos – Mayors will be creating assorted videos during their term that will appear in-game on the jumbotrons in the court areas. You can expect your Mayor to emit rallying cries and motivate the members of the Affiliation to perform at the peak of their abilities. After all, like you, they want to run The City!
  • Custom Playlists – Mayors can curate custom music playlists that only play within their respective borough/affiliation boundaries. This is actually a great feature in that each Affiliation court area will have its own vibe based on the musical selections of the current Mayor. As you move away from one court area, you will hear the music slowly fade away as you get further away. Simultaneously, you’ll be approaching a new court area and hear new beats starting to get louder with each step. It is the small details like this that you will find immerse you completely in the experience of The City!
  • Court Design – There will be events during a Mayor’s reign where if their Affiliation comes out victorious, they will have the responsibility of designing what the courts look like for their borough. Will they choose a thematic design that represents the mascot? Will they just ask for Lakers courts? They need to be thinking re-election here with every decision made!
  • Mural Design – Like Court Design above, there will be opportunities for Affiliations to customize the look of their court areas with highly stylized murals to really set the tone for the location when rival players come to visit!
  • Uniform Selection – When it comes time to formally battle the other Affiliations head-to-head, the Mayor will have the unique opportunity to select the uniform that all members will wear as they stream onto the courts of their rivals. Dressing for success will be the order here; Rival Days will be monumental periods of time during the season.
    • Mayors will also be interacting with their constituents via in-game polls and messaging that is all conveniently built directly into the menu system of The City.

Finally, let’s talk briefly about how Mayors come to be. For the launch of NBA 2K21, we have hand-selected the initial candidates for mayors (spoiler: they will be some of the biggest names from the NBA 2K community; you know all of them!). These four big-time community influencers will be leading the charge for our Mayor program. But these positions aren’t permanent! Every six weeks, we will be holding an election week in the game where you, the community representing your Affiliation, will have the final say on who becomes the next Mayor to represent the cause. These are going to be exciting times that can turn the tides of momentum! We have some fun ideas in store to make election weeks fun and memorable. Stay tuned!

MyPLAYER

With a map of this size, our objective was to populate it with as many ballers as possible. To make for a truly vibrant, dynamic environment, we’re supporting hundreds of MyPLAYERs simultaneously in the City. Here’s what’s new for every one of them:

  • Walking and Balling… at the Same Time - The basketball is an integral experience in The City in NBA 2K21 (yes, we have LOTS of different balls for you to express yourself with!). You will need to have one in your inventory to participate in the aforementioned Gatorade Court Rentals and Garage Hoops games. Easily my favorite usage of the basketball is the simple act of dribbling it around The City whenever I want. Like the brand new dancing system described above, you will be able to showcase your style with the real-time chaining together of a wealth of dribble moves. The dynamism in the system this year truly offers you the chance to create unique and custom showcases of dribbling the ball. One little tip for you: Somewhere out there in The City is a citizen who can teach you some of the best dribble moves around; you just have to find him!
  • Skateboard/BMX Improvements - One of my favorite improvements to the experience this year falls into the category of the simple joys I get while traversing The City. For the thrill seekers out there, you will find plenty of rails you can grind on with your skateboard this year. That’s right, express your style and grind on any rails you can find in The City! There is a very large hill over in the Beasts of the East borough that features the longest rail grind in The City. Have fun with that one! Oh, one more thing, there is a free fully kitted out skateboard waiting for you in Decks, our skateboard shop! Make sure to stop by and pick it up so you can partake in the fun!The BMX bike has also seen a lot of improvements to its functionality and control this year. Aside from being one of the fastest vehicles in the city, it now allows you to perform a variety of tricks to show off your style. Land the 360 and you’ll get everyone’s attention. I should probably note, the skateboard also has its own set of tricks you can perform, in addition to the newly added grinding abilities! One of our new vehicles, the Chopper, is a great way to flaunt your style. It’s not the fastest bike, but it’s not supposed to be. This one is all about looks and catching the attention of everyone around you. I’m a fan of all the different looks available here; more on the way too. This game will never stop growing and evolving!
  • Cosmetics – Creating a specific look for your MyPLAYER has been one-half of an important equation in making your MyPLAYER really yours. In the next-gen version of NBA 2K21, we’re opening up new customization elements to help you look just right.
    • Hair – This one is definitely a big ask from you, our community! We’re offering a number of new hairstyles this year that will keep you up-to-date with the latest looks!
    • Accessories – Rep your Affiliation with the latest accessories. Make sure and hit up ‘Embellish’, one of our many new stores in The City this year, where you can pick up some chain necklaces to truly show off your style!
    • Apparel – We’ve got some surprise items in store, including new types of hats (spoiler: I’ve seen the upcoming ‘wacky hats’ and they are my all-time favorites!), clothing, footwear, and more. For launch, head to your Affiliation store and mask up with a custom face mask that only people within your Affiliation can sport! It’s important to stay safe out there. And as always, we’ll continue bringing out new gear to freshen up your look all year long!

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Here at Visual Concepts, we see the dawn of a new generation as a chance to plant our flag and showcase to the world the kind of experiences we are capable of delivering to our dedicated fanbase. Born through a vision we started many years ago, NBA 2K21’s The City represents exactly that sentiment. The freedom afforded to us by the open-ended nature of The City is one we plan to grow with and into over the coming years.

2020 has been a challenging year for all of us in mankind. A global pandemic and devastating wildfires (in our neck of the woods) would have been cause for many to throw in the towel. To both my amazement and expectation, the development team here at VC buckled down, adjusted to their new norm, and delivered an experience that only we could deliver. I couldn’t be more proud of the team here, and more excited for our fans all around the world!

From our homes to yours, this one is for all of you! We’ll see you out there in The City! Erick Boenisch

  1. Its major how awesome this must be for the guys that love this mode to see this level of attention!!!!
am not a consumer of this mode, so am really just here to read the comments and see the reaction of those that do enjoy the mode
I am a bit jealous though that this mode is where the majority of development and marketing is focused on 😬
Ahh the 2k money makers - the fantasy modes.
Hard pass on both the WNBA myplayer and now this, for me. Sure the rest of you will have a blast with these - enjoy folks!
At this point, I've personally seen nothing that is enticing me to get this game. Hopefully, with wishful thinking, they're saving the best for last with some kind of huge myleague info drop for the minority of us who play offline. I have my doubts, though.
(Oh and Fireball.....really?! Is this NBA Jam?)

Why all these responses about Myleague which has nothing to do with The City smh

True. To many Myleague post not enough on the city. City looks cool. I will give it go after abandoning the neighborhood on current generation. Got to stale. This actually seems like a true next generation experience. Now I want MYLEAGUE NEWS!!!
    jaityla
My player creator is literally the damn same and clothes are still stiff as hell.

Yup same exactly. no hair physics and overall Nothing about this looks “next gen”
Just like expected, majority of next gen power goes towards bigger "open world".
Eventually we wont even have a main menu and go straight to virtual world to access everything in the game and of course we'll have to spend extra time walking around, standing in queues and experience sponsored ads all the way.
I would rather have a more realistic approach like the previous 2Ks. I seen no mention of Rec also it’s next gen why don’t the clothes have physics?

They do - you just have to buy VC to unlock them ;-)
All this is nice and all but it don't mean squat if it's going to be the same online play. SCREEN SCREEN SCREEN BEHIND THE BACK DRIBBLE BEHIND THE BACK DRIBBLE GREEN GREEN GREEN.
I've said this countless times the game is fun online when everyone didn't have any badges and still new. People actually played ball and not use some cheap tactic. If rookie area keeps badges out I will gladly play there and not bother entering the city at all lol
Not having real players, jerseys and stadiums to polish it up, really highlights how bad the animations continue to be in this engine and how far behind the rest of the visual tech they are.

Just gave cats another reason to stay holed up in their house instead of going and playing in a real city at a real park while repping a real hood lol.

Between Covid and winter 2k will be the closest thing to real ball for a lot of us. I'm dying to play some real ball but doesn't sound like that'll be happening anytime soon.
Edit: To comment on "The City" it's not really my thing but looks like a cool mode. I've said it once and I'll say it again between all the modes here 2k really could break this game up into 2 or 3 separate games if they really wanted too (NBA, WNBA, My Player/City). Not sure there's a sports game, or any game for that matter, with this amount of fully featured modes. Doesn't look like anything is half-baked for the sake of having more content.
This is why they are a top tier company. I appreciate all of this on a next gen jump.

This! Add curry slide back and forth. I am praying these tactics isnt as effective anymore. It’s been killing park for me.

I hope the MyPlayer folks spam up the MyNBA thread....they won't though, never do. For some reason players around here still have have this weird air of superiority because they play a virtual season.
Meanwhile, in their next post complaining that they can't bear to look at digital James Harden because he aint "thicc" enough.
If the mode isn't for you, why not keep it moving?
I think it’s cool and I appreciate the effort. I am strictly a myplayer mode player but even so most of this is lost on me. I don’t really want to run from place to place in a sports game. Would rather load into Rec or a Park game from a menu quite honestly.
That said, I don’t really participate in the NBA 2K community so this probably isn’t tailored for me. I could see younger people being pretty excited about this so that’s cool for them. I’m sure I’ll still dabble in some stuff on my way to the Rec Center.

Man I wanted to say this SO bad, 24. Thank you.
This honestly looks amazing. The fact that i'm most excited about random pickup games on a garage shows they really thought of a lot for this mode. I don't know how deep i'll go into this, but i'll definitely be giving it a shot.
The more they show the less impressed I am with it graphically. The scale of everything in this mode screams next gen but just by looking at it you cant convince me this was recorded on a ps5.
Why doesn’t 2k ever upload in 4K? Who’s in charge of that department seriously.
On another note I prefer rec / pro am over this . But this looks entertaining I’ll give it a chance .
I’m ready for this, hopefully with so much space it won’t become dull at all. The neighborhood had gotten stale to me but The City looks to be amazing. The individual stores, new hairstyles (FINALLY), affiliations, and random garage pickup games/rental courts etc are the standouts for me. I’m assuming The Rec will have the same formula which is fine they didn’t really need to change it at all besides gameplay stuff.

Real Talk. I'ma be like Amai Mask from One Punch Man (anime reference) and just be that 90 rated Big man Boss that all Rookies must go through to enter the city.
With that being said, something stuck out to me that, if I'm reading correctly, I'm not gonna put up with this mode.
"The second floor houses a great new feature in The City: Rental Courts. Want an uninterrupted run of games with your friends or other ballers you just met? Rent a court in the Gatorade Training Facility and play games however you want!"
So like... They're going to charge people VC to have private games now? lol
I'm sorry, but honestly... All of this stuff just sounds unnecessary. I only just started playing the Park on on this year's game, and when I say that was the most boring experience ever, I'm dead serious. No sprint button or fast travel, so you literally have to jog for 2-3 minutes from one place to another, with like.... Nothing to do in between. And then, to play a game, you need to wait even more.
It really just feels like 2K went all-in and using the power of the new consoles to just create flashy courts/arenas and a even bigger space for you to walk around and potentially do nothing at all for minutes at a time in. Like ALL of this power, and I really hope they're not going to try this "100 people per city in a city with only 15 courts" type ish, because the absolute worst part of this mode is all of the waiting and walking and not playing.
The Park isn't even that much fun from the perspective of someone watching the game, so while its like, OK, there's a ball on fire, why the hell do people have to line up to face them? I get making a special dedicated court to do this, but there needs to be an area like the "rental courts" where you can just jump in, with randoms, when you're ready to play a game, without needing to pay for it.

As a Madden-primary player, I am stunned by the depth 2K is putting into their next-gen game. And truthfully, stunned even more by the wanton negativity here for their efforts on their first next-gen release. I'm literally watching EA try to hype up a port of Madden while 2K has pretty much built a new game.
This looks so fun, especially in the world where multiplayer gaming is king. I can see myself spending several hours around The City with friends. Hoping for some Pro-Am and MyLeague news soon!
I'm really upset because this game has become so much more about glitz and glamour than actual basketball. It's arcadey to a T. And maybe I'm old and out of touch at only 28, but personally, I don't care about clothes. I don't care to watch games where literally every person uses the exact same strategy of behind the backs behind screens 3s until someone hits 7 of them first. I don't care about how the courts look; a court with a Kobe statute, while nice, is literally something that I'll look at once and then never pay attention to again.
But 2K has created this ecosystem designed to drain money from their players, to the point where basically any decision that they make has been one that will be profitable for them in the long run.
And I'm looking at the list of things there, and I'm like... trying to figure out where they have improved the actual user experience/quality of life of this mode. They made a huge open world, but I'm not sure if they've heeded the warnings of other actual RPGs that thought a huge open world, filled with nothing to do, is appealing.
There ain't nothing wrong with a good, menu-based system 2K. Not everything needs to be done in physical gameplay.

My thing with this is like I tried saying above:
An open world needs to be fun to actually be in. From all of these changes that 2K has written here, it really sounds like you are going to experience everything that needs to be offered in the first month of release. Sure, they'll switch it up: new mayors will add a cosmetic touch to it all.
But after a month on PS4 Neighborhood, I was literally... done. I went to the training facility and sleepwalked through those practices just to get the bonuses, and then I waited around in the chat with my friends as we waited for a court to open up. Or waited for someone to come and challenge us on the court. Or waited for someone to walk from the training to the Park/Rec.
Like, it sounds nice, in theory, but a game saying "100s of hours of gameplay" sounds nice, until you get in and realize 50 of those hours are cutscenes and walking from Point A to Point B.
I feel like they're doing too much, at the expense of tightening up their gameplay.

The more they show the less impressed I am with it graphically. The scale of everything in this mode screams next gen but just by looking at it you cant convince me this was recorded on a ps5.

Very underwhelming graphically. Haven’t been impressed since the first trailer....Created players look awful especially under that lighting
    krakdol
I only play Rec Center, I hope it's still in. There was nothing about it...

Yea i thought i missed it. I pray it wasn't replaced by the rent a court mode i saw in the gatorade gym where everyone had their own clothes lol.

Man we really have come far with graphics if this is what constitutes as looking like "***." I'll admit I'm less impressed than I initially was. It doesn't have an immediate "wow" factor like when 2k14 was first shown off, but I wouldn't go as far to say it looks bad. I'll reserve full judgement until I'm playing the game in person
I just really am hopeful the "MyCareer" is fully expansive as every other mode has been made out to be. This is dope, but nothing too crazy in terms of "Basketball", but I understand the "virtual experience" to feeling as close to a Sims reality when it comes to your MyPlayer.
Czar has two hour long videos discussing the guts of the game, with another coming for offense...the creation of the City didn't prevent any of that from happening.
It's definitely doing a lot....but this mode is designed for doing a lot. If you want standard outside hoops, there's Blacktop, and even better, we finally got rid of those awful sleeved jerseys .(They need to add back online Blacktop) Every studio has mentioned the power of the consoles, and how items can all be run concurrently. Perfect for a hub like this.
Give me a matchmaking lobby option of some sort and I'm good.
    UnbelievablyRAW
I don't play this mode at all but I'm pretty sure a lot of users just want matchmaking

All i want. NBA Live 18 nailed it. I'm going WNBPA has matchmaking which i think it will, will stick to that. City looks to have private courts to play with your friends but you have to rent them, wonder how much vc that will cost. I was really hoping this 'experience formally known as neighborhood' might go back in the direction of actually playing basketball but guess not. Just hope NBA Live 21 gets the green light.
Burroughs have mayors and the community can vote on stuff in game that affects the city....no lie that's dope

I mean like it or not, masks are a big part of our life now so the fact they represented them in game is cool to me. The fantastic news for the easily triggered though is unlike real life, you dont have to buy one or wear it.
I gotta say this looks cool. I havent felt the desire to grind out a myplayer in 4 or 5 years but this looks like it could suck me back in.
    Mayor idea is fantastic IMO.
I also like the rookieville aspect. I'm not anywhere near good enough to compete with %90 of 2k players and the thought of losing to a ten year old in Kansas while he crap talks me the whole time, has been enough to keep me away from online modes the last few years.

Kind of odd for a basketball game trailer, isn't it?
The reason I brought it up in this thread is because ever since being exposed to that Zion trailer, I have become weary of the possibility of nefarious agendas from 2K beyond their predatory money-making schemes. This is a game that has a massive platform and major influence on the youth, especially nowadays where many kids' lives at home revolve around their myplayer.
I'm skeptical of dubious themes, features, and imagery that may be present in the next-gen edition of park and neighborhood.

Said it when the neighbourhood was introduced, a city-like environment will be the next step once technical limitations are removed. More $$$ for them to make, advertisements etc. Just keep adding stuff to make players stay as long in the game as possible and distract them from actually playing basketball.
PS: No chance to switch affiliations unless...you got some VC of course haha...

Dang, I'ma need a transcript if the video an hour long lmao. I prefer to read than watch, but I'll try to find it.
But I feel you, I was speaking more to his mode, though. After like, a decade of playing PN/PNO, I've gotten bored with it. And I'm trying to move onto other stuff, but it feels like this mode, to have fun, you need to have VC.
To enjoy all of these stores, you need VC. To level up your guy, you need VC. And I'm hopping into the game, and it's like, VC takes an incredibly long time to obtain. Unless you buy it.
But then, turns out, the prices of everything are so high, that earning VC to get any one thing means expending hours of gameplay. Unless you buy it.
But then, say you do want to just earn VC? The thing with that is that it takes forever to get to the things that will earn you VC. Waiting around for a game in the Park. You could play offline, but, again: waiting around for your teammates to throw you the ball, waiting for the coach to call a play (if you play a big man, anyways) can be long and arduous, and if you're not a guard, you're probably not putting up big numbers anyways to be getting big bonuses/contracts. Especially if you haven't spent money to get yourself to a respectable OVR to be dominating long enough to get those big minutes.
Which is my whole thing about "quality of life" improvements. Make it easier/less arduous to earn VC. At the very least, add in fast travel. Online blacktop would be great; I only want to be online so I can face other players.
That's my only thing is that, all of these flashy additions are nice, but what have they done to ensure that people aren't getting burned out if they don't want to fork over obscene amounts of cash? What are they going to do from a gameplay perspective to ensure that the game stays "fun", that people aren't going to have to pay for (or treat 2K like a full time job paying minimum wage).
Never thought I'd be posting this in a 2k forum....
Let's leave the religious imagery discussion out of this fellas, going to remove any posts on it going forward.
Feel free to chop it up privately.
Quality of Life to me. Let everyone start with a 75-80 rated player. Increase the grind that it takes to get to 85-99.
The game is going to be out for a full year. We don't need people hitting that 99 cap in the first week, unless they're going to spend a crap load of money. Putting people at a OVR where they can be effective role players to start their career, and then work on their skill like that, would go a long way towards making it a bit more fun (rather than starting us at the bare minimum OVR). They're going this close to trying to claim themselves to be an RPG, but I don't know of any RPG where it takes you a full week just to actually be capable at the one thing that the game asks you to do.
So let your high school/college determine how many points you get, and after the draft, they give you enough to reach that cap. And then after that, you can spend that first year leveling up to become a starter, and then years after that to become an All-Star.
This way, when you hop into the City for the first time, you're not playing like you're actually yourself, in real life, bricking every shot and incapable of making a simple layup.
At the very least, that would make the first 2 months of the game bearable, without being crummy and obviously money-hungry.
    OMFG!

I think the city looks dope! MyPark isn't really my thing I was kind of hoping 2K would of went more in a realistic direction with having real life venues. I expect cars to be added to the city by 2K24-2K25. I'll check it out if they finally add matchmaking and get rid of the got next spots. In the meantime I'm looking forward to MyLeague and MyGM.

I'm seriously asking. Why does it matter? If it's in the game and you dont want to play it, skip over that menu option.
If the game is $70, the more value in one title makes the most sense. especially considering the amount of microtransactions that are rampant in this mode.
Can you imagine if you wanted to play online MyCity and traditional NBA modes plus spending money on microtransactions. You've all of a sudden spent $300. I'd be pissed.

This isn’t really the point of what I was getting at with my post. It’s not a matter of skipping over part of the game I don’t want to play. This game has made less, and less, and less, progress on NBA related modes, NBA related content seemingly each passing year. Meanwhile the modes tied into this seemingly double each year in the amount of new content and features.. 2K used to take massive leaps forward with in depth league related stuff, and presentation, animations, just the general basketball “realism”.. And now it’s essentially the same thing every year, with slight changes, and when they do get something right the “park” side of the gamers complain because they can’t spam their way to dunks every play and splash every 3 they shoot and 2k goes in and patches the game all to hell in the first month of release.
Personally I feel like 2k has went from being the best sporting game you could ask for, to a game where you just hope EA can work their way back into the mix even if it’s just to force 2K to make some improvement because they might have competition. Or perhaps just put out a better sim NBA title. And it’s no secret where all the development hours seem to go, and who they cater towards now.
EA was able to sell Live and Street side by side for years. And if they had this game branched off from the actual game perhaps there wouldn’t be a need to charge for the micro transactions anymore, or charge just substantially less. They could even go the route of war zone and make it a free DLC type of add-on, I just feel like however they do it it needs to be separated internally so that this mode doesn’t continue to take so much away from improving the NBA part of NBA2K. Because for a few years now this mode in 2K has seen vastly more improvements and changes, and the NBA related part of the game seems to be sitting on a back burner.

I don't know why so many of you are stuck on this belief that two separate games will make the NBA side significantly better. Do you all really think they'll increase their development team to work on two games? If anything, I see the NBA game getting LESS attention, because it's definitely not the money maker like the MyPlayer mode.
It's time to let go of the notion that NBA side "lacking refinement" is causing the game to go downhill.

Man, I get some people on here go over the top, but if you can't see "The City" as anything more than a giant platform for them to cram in as many ads/sponsorships as possible at the expense of quality of life/gameplay accessibility issues, then it's almost as bad.
Literally what they have done is said "how can we make The Neighbourhood contain even more advertisements?", and then added multiplayer gameplay in around that instead of the other way around.
Their whole goal each year is to force people to spend more time running around past ads when we just want to play actual basketball with our created players rather than standing/running around for 30 minutes to get a game.
There should be a matchmaking system just like NBA Live's last couple of games have had where you select a game mode from the menu, queue up and are balling with other players within a matter of a couple of minutes - but because that would kill 2K's ability to force us to look at ads, it's something they never even bother to discuss.
You guys need to try and not patronise us because it doesn't affect your own gameplay experience...

The entire concept covers as a way to sell more digital ad space to vendors. Its cute but I'm sure a large portion of the playerbase would rather matchmake into games after partying with friends in a lobby.
The crazy thing neither one of y’all have the game and basing this on assumptions when’s there more news coming out today and tomorrow. How about y’all actually get the system and game first before talking about what advances 2k has and hasn’t done yet on a brand new system. Just a thought

MyPlayer pays for everything else. Czar has told us that many many times before.
I'm a Myleague player but in order for me to enjoy Myleague, you have to respect who's paying the bills.
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
I buy 2K (since 2K2) mostly for the NBA portion of the game, mostly for Myleague ... yet ... within the last few years the online Mycareer portion has been growing on me, as it lets me play with my friends and brothers from another fun perspective (mostly Rec). So I am now spoiled, I would definitively not buy 2 incomplete games if they decided to split this game into 2 (unless the sum of their cost was the same as now and even then would probably not do it just due to the unnecesary complicacies introduced). For me to buy either, they would have to compensate by putting SO much worthy contain, that I honestly doubt they would catch up in this entire console generation (5 years or so).
I also can see that if they had to split it, the NBA portion would lack the resources ($ & manpower) to make significant advancements and would just get accentuated when sales do not reach the expected levels ... these are the times we now live, IMHO as much as the NBA is a global industry and has millions of fans, the ones who buy this game are not mostly interested on the NBA portion of it, ironic that the "parasyte" has grown to be bigger than its host, but true.
I just hope that while they keep growing and refining the "city", they also keep integrating basketball related simulation stuff (albeit it has been not as much and fast as I would like), keep enhancing, as much as they can the NBA related stuff as well as exponentially expanding the customization, editability, creation, options and features given to us.
This is probably too much to ask of 2K, but I hope they don't ruin this mode with over-aggressive microtransactions. They have added a lot of stuff here but I'm worried our paltry VC salaries as so called stars of our NBA teams will hold people back from enjoying the full experience. I'm worried about the "Rent-A-Court" costing actual VC to rent, bikes or vehicles or whatever to actually move around quickly costing too much, etc. I'm having flashbacks to the year we couldn't even afford haircuts. On a positive note, I think I saw we get one free skateboard so that helps but I'm still concerned.

Whole purpose of this is another layer of monetization, not anything else. That's where all investment goes since neighborhood is the thing. Nothing give them more than more ways to get you to spend VC.
Gameplay , actual game modes improvements are secondary thing for sure.

Dude. Do I look like I care about ads????
Some of y'all get on this damn high horse about ads, VC, "pure" basketball simulation, MyLeague, and graphics that y'all forgot that you're playing a video game. I understand some complaints, but it's getting to the point I'm seeing the same **** in every ****ing thread no matter the topic. It's like "Stop! We get it! You don't like the direction of NBA 2K.".
Personally, I'm at a point that some of y'all just need to make the ****ing decision not to play the game anymore. I used to play PNO all the time, and like another poster just mentioned, the MyPlayer mode is starting to grow on me. It's fresh. It's different. It still satisfies my itch to play basketball. The 5v5 gameplay has been the same since the beginning of time. It's really not going to get any better or "different" outside of the AI programming and graphics. The 5v5 gameplay has reached its maximum "value".
I thought I would NEVER see the day where I would choose MyPlayer over the NBA mode, but it happened and mode is actually fun and addictive. Some of you just need to give it a chance.
Wow. Really is becoming ridiculous in here.
Let people gush over the new modes, just as we should let people belly ache about it. No-one is right or wrong for their preference. We all want different things from our experience.
Positive or negative, we're all entitled to a voice on these things, as consumers.
Some are gonna love it, others hate - who cares? No-one should be vilified for dropping their thoughts pertaining to the inclusion of these new additions.
We're not all gonna be singing from the same hymn sheet....and that's ok.

db, the point is, no one comes in the legends thread and says "All of this is unnecessary, because I'm not interested in legends", nor have I ever played with them."
What does that accomplish? I'm 100% sure you'd have comments on that.
The thread is about The City. It's OK to not be interested in the city, or dislike the trailer, but if it's not in your wheelhouse whatsoever, what value is being added monologuing about the state of the series because there's a mode in it you're not interested in? The mode snob stuff has to stop.

Exactly. The majority of the thread has been complaints that there was no information regarding MyNBA or people "mad" that 2K Sports is spending too much time and resources on the MyPlayer mode.
I'm browsing Reddit to get opinions about the mode.

I can't stand legends stuff, 24th. You know me, I hate retro hoops. I'm always in those threads telling 'em to stop wasting their time on such lame modes ;-)
I Understand where you're coming from, and unlike most, I appreciate your candor when communicating with others. You've always got a level head.
I suppose for me personally I've never had much of an issue with folk sharing a negative view on things, I think it's just as fair game as those who'll be anticipating it.
If we're shelling out the cash for a game, I think all of us can say our bias takes precedent at some point. We're all guilty of that I would imagine. We all want what we want. Should we be in here putting the dampeners on the party? Perhaps not, but I think frustration tends to spill over when folk are seeing everything happening BUT the stuff they're waiting for.
It's a shame it comes down to members getting bent out of shape with eachother over nothing more than difference of opinion. Some are gonna love this, others are gonna despise it. There's always gonna be levels of resistance in any topic like this. Is it a bad thing? Who know's. Depends on how you look at it.
In terms of mode snobbery - I don't think you're ever gonna stamp that out. I still get mocked for only playing with the classic teams like a damn grandpa, but hey, it is what it is.
You damn kids and your stepedy back treys and Lebrody James.....;-)

This made me laugh (seriously, not being sarcastic lol)
I just wish we could all get along, even if we don’t all like some modes in the game.
I do love the legends BTW, I think they’ve added such an important layer to the game that I’d be pretty upset if they were ever removed.
It’s certainly not a bad thing to have differing opinions on this game, that’s the beauty of a message board :)

I tried my best to lighten the tone, lol, this thread seemed like it was about to go off the rails.
I think for balance, as 24th said, you guys should just rock up in the myleague update when/if it drops and rain on the parade.
All's fair in love and war!
With sincerity though, I hope you guys have a blast with these new modes, there's something for everyone. The rest of us need to exercise a little more patience, that much is true.

I feel you on this, because I really don't understand the "ads" thing myself. It's annoying, but it's like, and I can check my notifications while it plays out. I can't speak for many others, but I feel I've pointed out MyPlayer specific things. I used to only play PNO as well, for years, until last year, when I started to dabble on MyTeam (i got a PD T-Mac in one of my first pack openings with the VC I earned from getting to GOAT on PNO).
And then, I went to PNO, and it's like... 10 years later, we are STILL coming into the NBA as the worst player in NBA history. Like, there is literally no way that a 60 OVR player is going to even get drafted.
I suppose you don't have to spend any VC. But now, you are a 60 (maybe 65, not sure how long it takes to LVL up and I don't have VC to try it out with), there's no way that you're even good enough to crack the rotation unless you choose the worst team in the league. And even then, you MIGHT be able to come off the bench if you aren't at a stacked position. So since you aren't getting any minutes, you're not really earning a lot of VC, which means, you're not getting a chance to increase your stats, which basically forces you to pony up on VC. I wouldn't know, I bought the $100 version which came with 100k VC and levelled my guy up to just around 82 or so: a decent starter.
But that took 100k VC. To become what is essentially a starter on any basketball team. I'm not going to talk about how long it takes to earn 100K VC, but I do think that this would go into the quality of life of giving all players, to start, a VC bonus that allows them to get to at least 75OVR to start their career. This is a decent prospect off the bench, which if you specialize, can earn some sort of VC, get better, increase their skills, and actually have fun without the incessant waiting and grinding that is unique to only 2K.
And that's really my whole thing that, I suppose, I will have to wait for the game to come out and see. Not trying to complain, I'm just noticing that they talk a lot about the cosmetic of it all, but there isn't anything about those quality of life improvements that add on to the enjoyment of the game to game grind of the MyPlayer aspects. "Not the game", the gameplay and behind the back dribbles, but the gameplay outside of the game. That's my only thing is that, I want to know what they've done that made the gameplay outside of the actual gameplay better.
Because, and this is a real question: has anyone ever had fun playing MyPlayer without spending a dime on their VC, or without first banking it in another mode/a prior player?

    Depends on the individual.
I can play with and do pretty well with a low overall MyPlayer build, so I never feel the "pressure" to be great. I normally create 1-2 builds. and I'm content for the year.
If you're one of those individuals who want to score 40 PPG from the start or need 5+ builds, then yeah...it will get expensive real quick for those individuals. To me, a person is not being "forced" to VC. They just choose a lifestyle where it hard to build towards under the normal procedures.

I'll never understand the stance of "this isn't for me so it's a waste of time and resources. It's ruining the game." 2k seems to have put time and effort into just about every mode and feature of the game. It could have just been current gen 2k21 with improved graphics (which is all we might get for Madden and Fifa) but instead it is legitimately it's own separate game from the current gen version. It doesn't make sense they would put all this effort into various modes and features and then leave something like My League completely untouched (which seems to be the main concern of the complaints in this thread).
And I'd say this is consistent with 2k year in and year out. It's rare to see a 2k release where modes go completely untouched. When it comes to sports games they are one of, if not the, best developers in this regard. It's not like Madden where Franchise Mode fans have been neglected for years. That's not to say 2k is perfect but in comparison to their peers they are as good or better in pretty much every area (Madden fans wish EA took the same approach with Madden).
At the very least can we wait for the game to release and everything to be revealed before we starting jumping to conclusions and complaining? If the game releases and people's concerns are justified then feel free to complain and be upset. I just don't see the point of getting bent out of shape over stuff we don't have answers on yet.

I mostly play MyCareer more than any other mode... we used to be able to jump straight into playing basketball via the menus, now (because of the ads) they've devised ways to get you to stand in / run around the neighbourhood as long as possible.
If you're OK with that then cool, personally every 30 minute block of my day is more valuable than that seeing the whole idea of video games is you're supposed to be able to switch them on and start playing the game mode you want straight away...

Neighborhood literally ruined park experience since 2k19, simply because people who just hang around for mycareer stuff share an instance space with the park players. It made finding games so much more of a chore than it already was with the "got next" system. Bunch people from my contact circle who I've played with/against quit nba 2k solely because of neighborhood.
They've spent all this time to make all the assets within it , which also look very low quality in general, to diminish experience for people who just want to hop on and play.
There could be something like "find game" function to get the games as fast as possible without sitting in lines and hopping between instances . Then at least I'd be indifferent about it like I am about WNBA stuff.

Yep. The whole thing is reverse engineered from the perspective of make $____ with VC purchases, and try to throw in some basketball looking stuff along the way. Which of course is going to compromise the integrity of the trying to represent the sport. At least it's going towards something though, as most sports games like Madden are far behind as far as game modes and extra perks. None of this stuff matters much to me though if the gameplay is still lacking in realism.

At this point 2k is too deep into this function of the park. If they went to a more traditional matchmaking system most people would view that as a step back in innovation. Personally I'd rather have a matchmaking system to where I dont have to wait to play but I do appreciate 2k trying to be innovative and add a certain level of immersion that you would get from going to a basketball court in real life. If they can improve on the got next to make it more seamless with next gen hardware that's good enough for me.

    I reckon so.
I'ma give it a try and see. Honestly, I messed up my build when I made it, to the point where I had a big man who was only good at rebounding. Couldn't score inside against PGs, couldn't shoot worth a damn. I didn't feel like starting over from scratch, especially since I wasted all my VC on that build. Next gen, I'm gonna try and actually research the builds first, and I'll try it out.
I'm just hoping that they've taken out some of the grindy aspects of it, at least to start. I can play with low OVR players, as well, but that doesn't help when you're playing online against badged-up 90+ people with ratings and cheese on their side lol. At least to start, let us get to the low 70s, so we are in a position to actually play.
If I’m not mistaken, 2k is owned by Take two or something like that right? They are the same people that also own rockstar which makes GTA V. I’m not surprised they are going this route bc GTA is just as wild about micro transactions as 2k. I remember having a convo a while back around the time nba 2k18 had just dropped with a friend that loves park. I’m more of a my league guy but I said to him 2k is gonna mess around and make the park just like GTA for next gen and he laughed and said that I was reaching and hating on the mode which I wasn’t but I’ve played the game since its inception and over the years it was clear to me the direction they are going. I used to actually be a my career head to the max but after 2k18 the mode got completely useless to me due to all the micro transactions and other things I had to keep up with just to be able to just hoop and play the game (gatorade, boost, practices, etc). Regardless, I’m excited for the game and whatever it’s going to bring offline and online. Now the hard part isn’t even copping the game bc that’s secured since I got the Kobe edition for the current gen, I just need to actually get a PS5 so I really can give my honest take from what I’ve seen so far lol..

Normally I'd agree, and we have to wait and see, but I can see this year where those comments are coming from. It's still a normal development cycle so you have a limited amount of resources and you are essentially creating 2 games current, and next gen.
On top of that you have the pandemic, and now the huge allocation of resources to 'the city' ... so of course with a mode THIS MASSIVE, you have to wonder how much time and resources went into it. It's like they made GTA5 within 2k lol... there's mayors and crew's and multiple stories and a whole city! we're talking about a basketball game here haha.
So from that standpoint if you step back and look at it seems a tiny bit puzzling. Like they could have released this city thing as a standalone because from the way they make it seem - it's so fleshed out that it's an entire rec/park basketball game w/ unique venues, players, clothes, fire balls lol...
It's not a mode I'll even try because I'm simply not interested in multiplayer for sim basketball ever. I'm OK with it per se, but I do wonder a little how and why this mode seems to have taken such a big priority. I also don't like having to physically navigate a 'world' in 2k to achieve or get things. I re-booted 2k19 after playing 20 for a while and started a myplayer. I really hate walking/running around the neighbourhood to fetch this and treadmill that and practice etc. I'd rather a text menu lol... it's because it feels like a chore and wastes time and like another poster said, my time is limited. The older we get and if you have kids like me etc etc, you end up in a position where you get less and less actual gameplay.
So I'm happy with next gen load times (obviously) I just hope those aren't mitigated with crap I can't skip or awkward navigation elements. This isn't centred on the city only either, like even within games those cpu timeouts you can't skip for 15-20 seconds are super annoying too.
I really hope people have fun in the city mode, I really do - they already made it so I hope it is worth it.

Exactly this reality is built off duality. There has to be balance with everything. Dudes whining like this thread is overwhelming full of dislike comments. Typical OS sh*t. Let people have/express their opinions
The graphics and visuals in these new trailers haven’t looked as good as the reveal, but i guess the MP modes will suffer in performance
this looks real cool, I'm just hoping the servers can take everybody, I have no problems with other online games but 2k has the bad habit of disconnecting me constantly

NBA 2K is literally the ONLY game that I have problems with online.

You should be fine considering PS5 and Xbox series are both sold out. Maybe a good month before people start getting there hands on the next gen systems lol
