NBA 2K21 Announced During PlayStation 5 Event - Trailer, Screenshots and Sweat...Lots of Sweat Revealed

NBA 2K21 was announced during the PlayStation 5 event earlier this afternoon, featuring New Orleans Pelicans Zion Williamson. If you missed it, we’ve posted the trailer below, along with some sweaty screenshots captured from the video.

Of note, this is pre-alpha PlayStation 5 development NBA 2K21 footage.

NBA 2K21 is built from the ground up for the PlayStation 5, according to the latest tweet from 2K, with next gen graphics, next gen load times and next gen power.

Other than a fall 2020 release mentioned at the end of the trailer, 2K did not reveal an official release date for NBA 2K21, but it’s typically early to mid-September.

And here’s Zion Williamson and co-founder of Visual Concepts, Greg Thomas highlighting the next-gen console’s ability to deliver lightning-fast load times (2 seconds?) and realistic visuals.

“I’m hyped by how realistic the next gen gameplay is and how accurately it captures my looks and playing style,” stated New Orleans Pelicans’ Zion Williamson. “It’s mind blowing to see what 2K has created with NBA 2K21. I can’t wait to see what else NBA 2K21 has in store.”

For next-gen, NBA 2K21 will feature drastically improved load speeds, visual fidelity on an unmatched level and an unrivaled breadth of content for basketball fans and players. Fans can expect new game features, game modes, brand partnerships, social events, in-game experiences and a brand new soundtrack that will set the record as the most definitive collection of music ever assembled in a video game.

Be cool if we could shoot around in that gym, kinda reminds me of NBA Live lol

Yes exactly! More specifically, the NBA Live where Beluba changed their dribble system. I don't remember which one that was, but that was the last Live I played. I literally only played it because I enjoyed the control I had while dribbling.
who remembers that old teaser 2k came out with that was shadowy, and i want to say had a person or two dunking on a roof top...
    this reminds me of that.
i need to see more, but i was expecting greatly improved cloth physics, creases in the shoes as well as smoother animations. but the old teaser i mentioned was impressive, but didn't look as good the LeBron trailer 2k ultimately dropped.

See now this is something to be hyped about if it's built from the ground up. I thought I read that its going to be a straight up port. The clip with Zion did nothing for me. Now just wait for Momentous to make PS5 version trailer of NBA2k21.

On second thought, this was the same mistake that NBA Live made when they built the game from the ground up...keeping my fingers crossed they don't inadvertently repeat history.
Definitely not as hype as seeing that 2k14 trailer the first time, but that trailer obviously offered a lot more game play footage. Need to see more

I think they will be fine. PS5/XboxX version will look really pretty but bare bones. Kinda like NBA2k14 when it debuted on PS4.

    Ah memories...
There was a number of things NBA 2K14 didn't keep from that LeBron debut trailer. And there were things they added, like padded sleeves and other tweaks.
The net looked like it had volume and wasn't a series of flat shapes with physics altering the connection points.
I mean. Okay. The lighting and all. Looked good. Big tell will be how it looks when we're in a big stadium. And there didn't seem to be a lot of movement in the jersey. WIP?
I like how the team at NBA 2K takes next gen to heart, they really want to make a big leap, give people shock value. Madden on the other hand seems take incremental steps going into next gen, not making any huge changes from one gen to the next.

I know that sports game marketing isn't tailored to my gaming wants any more, but nothing in this blurb moves the needle for me at all.
IF they've really built the next gen NBA 2K21 from the ground up though, I expect all aspects of gameplay to be exponentially improved. I'm not expecting a failure from this dev team like we've seen from EA teams with rebuilds in the past. We'll see.
My hopefully take aways from the teaser:
. The lighting is a key focus
. the rim will now flex when it's being hung on
. foot plating seems to be improved
. Dribbling to size up to exploding off sizeups seems way
    more intuitive and explosive
    . Sweating has been improved
. amazing facial expression and no more dilated empty eye
    gazes
. Skin textures are looking real noice with blemishes and
    darken areas
. Muscle tones and movements looks super fluid and
    realistic
.Screen space reflections on the court due to the better
lighting looks amazing...reminds of the effect great
lighting had on 2k14 on me when I first saw it
. the hunch over dribbling seems gone when sprinting
. The net got some next gen love

I remember that teaser. None of the games lived up to its quality and hype. I hope this isn’t the same. I want the game to look like the Zion vid. We needed a new engine.

Being built for PS5 is important to me. Hopefully that's facts

The quote means that the game will be built from the ground up for next gen consoles. Not just the ps5. Basically “new engine”.

Honestly, I wouldn't spend too much time analyzing the trailer. We already know that the graphics is going to be a given, like someone else said before. Truthfully, I'm not really expecting that big of a jump, because we are getting closer and closer to realism. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this end up being the longest console generation ever. The real advantage of the next-gen console is the simple fact that the hard-working handle the software, so the gameplay should be closer to real life physics and movement than anything else.

That's what I'm really hoping to get out of next-gen. Can someone explain the technical terms of being "in engine?" I know when something is CGI, it's computer generated just for that particular video. Does "in engine" mean that the game is gonna look exactly as it does in the teaser? Not only does it look great visually, but it looks like every dribble and movement had a great feel.

Fair enough bro.....but their teaser videos are not arbitrarily composed...notice how the camera pans to try and TEASE what kind of expectations consumers should expect ....this is not a CGI trailer this is in-engine
and at the bottom it says pre alpha ps5

    Pretty positive
guys chill, its a CGI trailer... theres literally no point in discussing it right now besides graphics. I strongly believe the gameplay will feel nothing like this trailer, dont you all remember Madden 14 and Fifa 14s trailer for when the PS4 came out ? lol
At least that LBJ 2k14 trailer was legit, not this one tho
This is 100% cgi. Literally just like watching a random cgi vid. I have faith in Mike Wang though.
Please fix body types. Even body mods on pc are waay better than what 2k makes. Shrink the heads, skinnier legs, longer legs, give em butts/hips and you’ll see a big improvement overall. Pc gamers will agree.

People, can we stop complaining about the damn sweat. It's basketball, players sweat buckets. If there was no sweat people would complain why no sweat, if there was moderate sweat people would complain it's not enough sweat, if there was a realistic amount of sweat people would complain it's to much sweat. Social media has made people into a bunch complainers for the sake of complaining because those type of people either enjoy negativity or just like to rile things up. The first thing that comes to mind is a bunch of 12 year olds.
The mouth, the lips, the teeth, the nose, how the eyes shut, the eyelashes, the ears, the hair, the beard, the player build, the amazing lighting, The Sweat, all freaking spot on. A lot of you guys focused on the sweat and missing out on the beauty that NBA 2k21 will be. I can only begin to imagine how unique each player will animate and look.

My player and the modes it comes with makes them the second most money in transactions in this game.. They are not making a game without including that.
Now franchise mode? Well I'm kinda worried for the fans of that mode, they better keep their ps4 and Xbox one

I fear that, too. If they don't include any franchise mode or something to play an online league with custom rosters, that could be the end of our online league that exists continuously for 15 years since NBA live 2005.
On the other hand, chances are high, that on PC we won't even receive the next gen version the first year, like last time, where we got a roster update of NBA 2k13 as NBA 2k14.

Yeah, thats why the current gen game is so disastrous. They completely wiped everything that worked on old gen (until 2k13) and created something from scratch which brought many problems with it (2k14-2k20).
Obviously it's in a darkened gym with a single player, but the lighting looks to be much improved. I would say that was the biggest takeaway from the trailer.
Sadly, the uniform fit and physics look the same.
The net looked much better; it actually appeared to be a net hanging off the rim instead of a paper cutout.
That's really all I can take from this. Some people are reading way more into it than anything that is actually shown (how are people saying footplanting is better already?) but I suppose that happens every year.

The video seemed to highlight the dribbling and footwork, not sure if it's a cue from the devs or just a coincidence.

The graphics are much bigger improvement than I expected but graphics have never been the issue with 2K. I can't wait to see if the physics, foot-planting, etc are better during games. Gameplay and player movement has to improve dramatically for me to purchase 2K21.

I can probably pull out a clip from 2K20, 2K19, 2K18, etc that shows very similar footwork. We saw 10 seconds of him moving in an empty gym with multiple camera cuts . That doesn't really confirm anything.
I'm not saying it's not possible, but for people to say that they improved it based on this small, handpicked and heavily edited footage is a little asinine.

It just means, at the least, they translated legacy code into new code for a new operating system.
It doesn't necessarily mean systemic change or a systems architecture overhaul.
Remember, this is the marketing department talking.
Game play has never been a huge issue for me. There are years that I don't love it right out of the box, and years where it's felt amazing, but even at it's worst 2K has played better to me than most other sports games. Graphics look great but I'm still a bit left down to the player build.. Still no butt, Zion doesn't appear to have a unique frame.. I'm ok with with 2K not having full on body scans for every single player, that would be ridiculous, but we at least need options for more than 3-4 different player models.. Sliders for editing different body parts would be ideal, I know a lot of the WWE games had options like that. Hell I think even Madden's awful player creation/editing has that.
I learned many many years ago to pay no attention to non-game play cut scene promos. 30 seconds of random game play will tell me more about a game than these promos ever will.
Maybe Im a dweeb but I want Next Gen player buyouts and Next Gen editing Years Pro in Quick Edit and Next Gen being able to copy and paste team game plans.

This has the potential to be the Madden 06 trailer all over again...but god do I hope it looks close to that lol.

I doubt it. Madden 06 trailer for the PS3/X360 was biggest lie that I ever witnessed. They haven't achieved that level of detail in the CURRENT generation of consoles.
Man, I just saw that on Shakedowns2012s breakdown of the Zion trailer and was coming here to post it. It's tech from some company in Europe, I believe. But yeah, thats awesome. Combine that with 2K library of mocap animations and scans and holy hell.
Don't get your hopes up from that video, its a pre-rendered video, basically a 3d animated movie. There is very similar one for soccer that released years ogo that people thought its a video game capture.
2k could fabricate something hyper realistic too without counting on user inputs and ai, just to produce smooth lifelike animations out of graphics engine.
For example, the cutscene from 2k18 mycareer here:
    https://gfycat.com/flawlesshollowcoati
we havent got such smooth animations in real gameplay but its clearly made on same engine.

Thats well and good but what is wrong with 2K targeting something along these lines? According to Shakedown this vid is from 2019. We wont know until later this year, anyway.
I want to know what kind of customization the PS5 will have. If it's just the game with no create rosters and unis and arenas like on the PS4, I'll pass.

Didn't say anything wrong targeting anything, its just that video doesnt represent what 2K about to be at all. It isn't a capture from video game. Its like watching real NBA game and expecting upcoming NBA 2K game to have same lifelike look with every animation.

The reason the animations look so realistic is because it is purely cgi. It is already predetermined movement, There are no branch animations required at all. It’s hard to not have sliding and funky animations when there has to be user inputs to determine where players are moving.
Claiming this to be the baseline is completely baseless, although I’m sure the new systems can reach this level of graphical fidelity, movement may not look as realistic.

I'm also having that problem, someone's gif/video is taking up the whole page.
And as for that clip, it's from a virtual betting simulation. It is CGI, predetermined proceduralevents. Not a game that can played. That company's football betting sim was posted in the Madden forums too, but it is not a game and not a feasible "baseline."
My link broke that page. Or specifically quote of the post I made. I managed to replace it by blocking gif with adblocker but it still remain in other person quote which i cant do anything about.
Point was made that we had that sort of fluid animations during mycareer cutscenes already with same engine when its just a 3d animation without gameplay mechanics

wow just wow if ever 2k bought this system this will be the best basketball game ever period.
If history is any indication, it's gonna look pretty damn good. And then slowly regress as they pack more and more into it.
Just looking at that rim/net etc. I can't imagine it looking much more real than that in future gens etc.
The standard is pretty high now. Visually it's hard to have any complaints anymore, loving that.

I understand all of that. I play 12min quarters in ML. 95% of my time is spent playing ML. I play a lot and I watch a lot of CPU vs CPU gameplay. CPU vs CPU gameplay is a lot smoother with less sliding and clipping; especially with lower body up and inside shot contact sliders. It is nowhere near as realistic as this footage (I don't want to jank up the page anymore) is but it's noticeable. I know the user input element changes things, I do. I just looked at Chase's thread with the trailers for the next gen releases and 2K6/2K7 had a similar look to this footage. I don't think 2K21 playing similar to this is a reach. It may be. We'll see. I'm not gonna be heartbroken or anything either way. But I'm one of the people around here who enjoys 2K anyway so barring that 2K14 online crap I'll enjoy the 2K21 for the graphics if nothing else.

Does 2K use CGI for their trailers?
agree with those that say this is cgi. or it's edited together with cgi footage.
the lighting has alot to do with this as well, and could it be that the footage is 8k.
it looks good though, but i do have to see game-play footage.
Mostly 2k anytime shoes a visual of a game that says in game footage it’s 95% what the game visual looks like. I never walked away from 2k saying they lied to us about how the game looks . Worst they do is have a few bad face scans and body types still need work

While it says it is "Actual" footage, note it doesn't "in-game". I'm guessing that's simply because it isn't "in-game", i.e. this isn't footage of a moment the gamer will actually experience. It's a tech demo.
When you started adding 9 other players, refs, bench, crowd, etc, and the camera zooms out (real "in-game"), things may not look quite as detailed or smooth.
Anyway, IMO the star visually was the rim and net, not really Zion, and that may very well be an accurate in-game representation.

Yeah 2k14 had the same pre alpha text, of course the lighting in a actual arena will change the way players look in additions to the resources the system uses to render everything else on the screen, hopefully the PS5 SSD will help.
What the hell is that Virtual Basketball demo? It doesn't seem like it's a video game but used for gambling.
That engine is insane. The graphics and shooting animations are a little wonky but so many things that 2K does horribly (contextual passing and catching animations, foot-planting, warping/sliding) are on point in that video.

As others have said, it seems to be a scripted video, so it wouldn't really be comparable to a game that requires user input. It's more comparable to the cut scenes we'd get in The Prelude each year, like this for example.

It would be awesome if 2K can add all those subtle animations to give the players more life. For example, early in the clip how the defenders head sorta keeps an eye on the ball handler and the guy he's covering. That subtle head swivel.

yes. all those little nuances, brings life to the players. Every players motion and actions look organic and unattached to other players.
I actually think this is real players that were drawn over with computer graphics. not motion capture.
the motions are too life like.

Yeah the last screen makes it seems like it's gambling related. I don't know much about gambling but I know of virtual horse races and such, which have been around for years. For such a powerful and well funded industry, this COVID-19 stuff basically poses their biggest operational risks possible - even those gambling companies who try to diversify regionally would be hit hard.
So I wouldn't be surprised if, right now, they are busy working on how they can minimize this impact going forward with virtual gambling options just like this - they certainly have the resources to do it. It wouldn't be a game per se, as it wouldn't work by processing human user input (which I think we can quite clearly see this "gameplay" does not, it's just too smooth). If I had to guess, it isn't real-time CPU v CPU either but more a stitching together of possible sequences that are randomly chosen, that just happen to be very seamless and visually smooth.
If I were a gambler, I'd watch that and think it is close to the real thing. In time, they could introduce virtual personalities and superstars, so it isn't just random (like a poker machine, at least in theory) but a mixture of random outcomes with better odds on certain outcomes based on which character is doing it. They could then build the next MJ, just virtually in their own basketball universe.
Not everyone will get on board but I think enough people will for it to work - if you make it look real enough and sell other stuff around the games, some people will get into it.

In all likelihood, the game will look something in between that jaw dropping 2K21 render an the current gen.

    Yeah that's what I'm thinking....
I think this trailer is just next gen 2K21 maxed out graphically. Throw in a full arena full of people, coaches, players etc. and I think it reduces in quality.
I don't think this Zion clip is CGI though (like a few others are saying).

The trailer is not gameplay. It is what developers often call in-engine footage.
Gameplay Will look nothing like the trailer, trust me. Developers have done this for years. Cant believe people keep Falling for it.

Do you know of an instance where 2K has done this with an NBA game? If so, please link if possible?
    Thanks.

They have done it with a cutscenes in mycareer mode. There been some rendered basketball sequences on the same engine featuring animations that wasnt part of gameplay.
I've broke whole page trying to post video link hope it works fine now under spoiler :

Did those cut scenes have enhanced graphics? Or just animations?
I don't play those modes so I'm genuinely asking.

All on the same engine. Clip i posted from 2k18 and textures exact same as gameplay.
Well animations are in the graphics category too for a sports game. Hence that video look so nice and fluid, with robotic, gamey animations it would look like crap most of time.
Basketball games and their obsession with sweat always amuses me. Each year we are treated to comparison screenshots of the previous year and the new one showing off the improvements...with sweat. Then this teaser is just like look at all that...sweat.
    MJ the Ju1ceman
    No franchise mode.
    Everything online, no offline save
    No Create a Player
    Probably some glitch mid game
    No MyPlayer
Some ludicrous way to get microtransactions into a half-baked game.
    Can't wait! :woot:

Where did you get that from?

After drooling over the graphics for next gen, my attention always turns to how created players will look. I usually go 7 or 8 years in ML so the league is about half CAP players and half real and while the scaned players will always look better I always hope the CAPs at least not look horrible (2K15/2K16). Considering the similarities I dont see why an improved version of the current CAP suite won't look good. This ray tracing lighting looks great.

I hope they listen to this specific, continuous complaint. I would hate to skip a bball game 3 years straight.

IF KYLE LOWRY AND DONOVAN DONT HAVE BEHINDS... WE RIOT!
I'm not getting hyped over a CGI video, I'll wait until actual gameplay footage comes out. With that being said, there is always a huge graphics leap from one console generation to another when it comes to 2K, so I'm sure the graphics will look impressive in-game.

It did look much more realistic though.

I've never once seen 2K try to pass off totally regular CGI as gameplay captured.

Its a very good chance that wasn't CGI:wink:

WTF, do the rims seriously not bend on 2K20? How have I not noticed that?
Edit: nope they definitely bend in 2K20. Not a lot, and nowhere near as much as the 2K21 video, but they do a little bit (as well as the whole backboard bending down). I'm actually not convinced it doesn't look more realistic in 2K20?
Hey maybe they'll have it so you can just inbound the ball and shoot from your own paint, ultimate range extender. Essentially all these games are anyways now.

More in NBA 2K21
