  1. I mean...it's a trailer. Doesn't really look like anything we haven't seen before. We know what the graphics look like and we know the animations are pretty good already. But if you told me this was 2k18, I wouldn't question it.
I'm more interested in gameplay videos and blogs/interviews discussing the changes.
Nothing special or new... apart from some new facescans and maybe an orange ball? Crowds are way too dark, so they didn't tweak that like people said they might. A decent hype trailer though.
This is an excellent trailer. What I was looking at was the animations and from what I saw, they looked good.
Some trailers in the past exposed a lot of weird looking jumpshots etc so this is shaping up to be nice
I mean, arenas look the same and at .22 seconds in Covington is the EXACT same as he been ..sigh. Other than that it looks nice tho.

The CP3 dribbling clip stood out to me. Looks like we may be able to finally put defenders in jail in PNR situations.
Nice deal for those that don't have an Xbox One, as it looks like 2K19 is bundled in with the S and X.
So are title patches coming to Xbox first this year since they are selling 2K19 console bundles exclusively with Xbox?

@ the :15 mark they actually have data on the laptops at the scorers table! DANG.
    Now THAT's something I haven't seen before.

That's been in the game since 2K14.
2K seems to like to highlight the player emotion element of their game. Hopefully, they put the same level of effort into the crowd reactions.
Crowd ambiance is key to immersion. IMO, more than the player emotion animations.

There's been stuff on the screen though? I just see black laptops sitting on the desk when I play on PC

MLB The Show 18(SDS) does crowd animations(happy, sad, frustrated) and cheers and jeers really, really well.

Honestly 2k arenas are too dark, all they have to do is increase the light in the arenas and the game would look way better
Maybe I'm letting them off the hook but, quite honestly, arenas in 2K have been so overly dark the past few years that I just figured it had something to do with processing power and system limitations.
If, by chance, the decision to blacken all the arenas is totally just an artistic liberty and has nothing to do with system limitations, then I'm 150 percent with you. The Pistons' new arena does get a bit dark toward the upper deck in real life, but it does not tend to go pitch black after seven rows.

Interestingly, this shot of Staples from the trailer actually looks pretty great:

Hate to be a complainer, but it bugged me that old Laker unis were used in this trailer.
Old trailer old build....is it only the trailer today? Any accompanying blog?

They really need an overhaul of stadiums/courts... especially courts. So many of them, if not all are extremely inaccurate. A huge pain to look at when you're really into authenticity.

Which probably confirms that this is from an older build of the game. I wouldn't expect any major changes going forward but just something to note.
I know the stadiums still look dark but is it me or does the lighting on players look a little better? Seemed like player skin tones and jersey have a little more pop to them. Almost like they brightened the lights focused down on the court.
It doesn't really confirm anything to be honest. It could be that last years jerseys are probably just in the game as alternative jerseys, similar to the other retro jerseys.

Courts is definitely one of my complaints in the visual department. A lot of them are inaccurate and dull looking. It's one of the areas the other game kills 2k in.
It looks like new mouth scan technology was implemented and it looks greats. Makes all the difference in emerging me into the game and further blurs the line between real life NBA and videogame NBA.

Rewatching this, the facial expressions look really, really good and natural....especially on that KAT clip...

Agreed... It seems it extends to the eyes as well...
One of my old complaints regarding player models was that the eyes seemed off on players but they look way more authentic in this trailer...
I think this trailer might be 4k game-play... The textures look too crisp, Id be surprised if it was 1080p...

But if they had both jerseys in at the time they made the trailer why would they decide to go with the old jersey instead of showing off the new one? This has typically been an indicator that the trailer isn't of the latest build. I'm pretty sure these trailers are made a couple weeks in advance as well so odds are this isn't the final build (whatever that even means in a day where day one patches are all but a guarantee).
Doesn't matter either way though. It's not like the game is going to look like a totally different game in a later build.

i see that the show-the-ball hakeem fake is still in there. why would they flaunt that? not impressed, give me the czar blog.

Czar tweeted at me and it sounds like they aren’t scheduled to release a blog this year and no request for them too from marketing? Bad move imo! Smh! Simnation needs to stand up here. Let czar and OG loose! Best blogs by far imo!!!

You can actually see the new Lakers jersey in the trailer, but they're in the background covered by a depth of field. You can see them at these timestamps; 0:08 and 0:15

Thats 2 years in a row. 2K marketing is bugging. They need to steal the zeitgeist back from Fornite, where most of the community move to, mostly due to them being open with development and to the community desires.
2K with the same marketing strategy for the last 10 years. The trailer is getting ate up in the comments section for being "nothing new, nothing special"
I know more of Red Dead Redemption 2 than this game which comes out in a month....smh

Interesting.... seems a bit odd considering they've released blogs in the past. Maybe, and this is a big maybe, they really are trying to hide something.
Player likeness has really improved from last year. Some players like John Wall, Giannis and CP3 all look completely improved. I’m ready for real gameplay but this was a nice little trailer. That song most likely being in 2K has me hype cause that’s a perfect basketball game song. Won’t know till we see real gameplay but lighting on the players might be improved, the arenas may be the same though.
    vannwolfhawk
I woke up for this? 🙄 I’m going back to bed! Someone wake me up when Czar and OG get released! 😴

Same. Did we really need the hype announcement for a trailer? Just release it.
There is so many things that need to be update from this video i just hope that the first patch will be the art details. this player still need to bulk up.
It finally seems like they’ve improved on something NO ONE talks about anymore, but was highly touted in 2K14 next gen...
    Ecomotion.
Emotions are a huge part of basketball, and I’m hoping they’ve improved this feature because it sure as hell is immersive. It was one of my favorite new features that year, and I had no idea why it wasn’t expanded on throughout the years.
The rest besides CP3 putting the defender in jail along with the Eurodunk where what caught my eye.
With the facial animations from this trailer, I'm hoping they added back in LeBron's "dunk face" that was in 2k16 and then removed in 2k18. Every time LeBron dunked in 2k18 he made this awkward blank face that showed his teeth for some reason. In 2k16 they had LeBron's facial animations perfect. I don't know why it was removed. Hopefully with him being a cover athlete, they put it back in.
2K I know you guys will read this. Please fix the lighting for certain arenas. It's the only thing that's not perfect with this video and it's a big immersion killer believe it or not.. A month to go there's still plenty of time. Please..
This is nit picking but some of the arm sleeves looking extra thick lol The Morris one really stands out...could just be an early build thing. Also, DLo with his tattoos

Considering people have been complaining about the arena lighting for a few years now I wouldn't count on it being fixed. At this point I just assume there is a reason for not improving stadium lighting. They've made clear attempts at addressing other issues over the years, such as body types, I can't imagine they are blatantly putting in no effort to improve arena specific lighting.

I feel like they’re intentionally making arenas dark so that jersey colors and player faces can pop more
One thing I noticed that has bothered me for a few years:
They really need to tone down the ridiculously long, baggy shorts. Very few players have them going all the way to their knees in today's league, and they are nowhere near as baggy as they are in the game.
    CP3 from the trailer

    CP3 in real life

    Kentavious Caldwell-Pope from the trailer

In the 2k shorts, you could legitimately fit an extra leg into each leg hole.

Glad someone else noticed the thick sleeves, I hope that’s just an early build thing as some of this trailer is early build stuff. Sleeves looking how they looked 2K11 and back lol
Trailers aren't designed for ANYONE in/on this Forum. Trailers are for the uninitiated to see. We've all been watching Trailers for the past what 15-18 years? Is there anything they can show you to impress you? Reason why 98% of the people on here say, show me gameplay.
What history has explained to us about Trailers, they're usually old builds and sometimes several different builds in one trailer, and it's not really Gameplay, but highlights.

Not a lot to make of it really but there was definitely one concern; the Chris Paul clip has more than a whiff of the crab dribble from 15 about it, and I can see it activating at completely the wrong times.
1.Mcgee still look small. this guy need to have short upper body and longer legs and broad shoulders.
2.Kyrie still have the big head.
    3.Lowry's, Covington hair not updated.
4.Shorts length and width need to be smaller and less wide.
5.Dennis Smith dunking, looking down and not in the ring?? no way that is correct.
6.Alley oop animation with Gordon should be in street only. that was bad.
    7. Dwight Howard is toooo dark.
8.Kawhi need more muscles and shoulder than that. he has the same body like Derozan in that video. Leonard is more bulk.
    9. Players in warmers with hood on??? most of this player in bench wearing that hood.
10.Blocking..they really need to make an animation that you block the ball with a palm or finger close to the ball and not this usual animation they making like it was swat by an arm or an invisible thing.
11.Is there going to be an altercation now (Booker+Lillard) i hope and pray!!

This are the things i notice so far in the trailer that need some attention before the release.

Who here has said that they're not buying the game because of the trailer? I don't know what the hell you're talking about... we're just critiquing flaws in the game. God forbid we do that on a forum centered around sports gaming.
    A couple things I noticed:
    1. Harden has his nosebleed celebration, not sure if that was in the game before but I don't recall ever seeing.
    2. Looks like there may be tip-off rituals in the game (0:15)
    For reference:

It was Generalized Comment, not anyone specific. No different than the, "I want to see gameplay, forget the trailer" statement that I'm sure is in the thread as well (haven't read all the comments).
Plus, as I stated before, I was hyped about Trailers in 2008 like the next guy, but at this point, I understand they're not really made for me but the masses, so I don't sweat it either way.

Trailers used to show something new, 2k12 comes to mind, but 2k has had basically the same game for years now with a few tweaks here and there. Their core gameplay is still flawed, but they are stuck in the current build. I don't think they are going to improve gameplay that drastically to the point that they can show it off in a trailer until next gen.

Not bad 2k art department but you know you guys can do better..
These teams not paying their light bill is getting real old.. Seriously though I don’t want to hear that 2k can’t brighten the arenas because they’re “maxed out” graphically. Just look at created arenas lighting and how much better it is. 2ks art department sucks, still no Nike sign on the arm sleeves, and courts are so bland and washed out. I desperately wish the other game would get its act together from a franchise stand point so I could fully switch over.
Maybe I am expecting to much from 2k or games in general but this game just no longer looks good graphically, I see guys impressed about details on a computer on the sideline, but I am still wondering why darkness has fallen in every single arena, it looks horrible and I cant get used to it, it was one of the main reason I didn't enjoy playing 2k18.

Yea man, I completely agree with you. It's kinda hard to get excited because at the end of the day, even with all of the cool little intricacies that are added to the game, it still looks like 2K18. I play on broadcast cam, so good lighting would be something that I can easily notice because it can be viewed on every play. We're seeing things that look good in special circumstances. Yea the sweat looks cool on a close-up, the facial animations look amazing on a close-up, but the bad lighting is really hampering the graphical improvements from shining (pun intended.)
    howardphillips214
If lighting is preventing you from playing, then you've got to lower your standards some. Just saying.

Naw bruh you never lower your standards, but I can save my money if something isn't to my liking and the graphical direction of 2k is no where close to where it was or where it could be at this point why settle for less when you can always have more esp. with something you pay for if it was a free game then fair enough standards should be low.
I don't know why but these kind of trailers doesn't impress me anymore... if you tell me this is 2k16, 2k17 or 2k18 I will believe you... more of the same...

Don't know if you were referring to me, but I didn't say anything about lighting preventing me from playing. Unfortunately, I will always buy 2K because that's just what I always do. It doesn't mean that I can't voice my opinion on what I'm gonna end up buying, no matter what. Just saying.

2k is NOT maxed out graphically. It cannot be, if that's the case they need a new engine because they got 4k ps4 and Xbox now so there's no way they can't have lit up arenas or brightened stands or whatever the case is.

The thing is that the actual arenas do have the subtle differences in the rim and ball sounds and everything else that was in the trailer. It's just bizarre that they didn't record the most noticeable component in what differentiates arenas in the crowds. It's like the recorded everything but. If they did all that then it shouldn't be too hard to mic up the different arenas and put that in game as well.

I forgot 2k15 had the dark arenas too, that alone shows its not a problem due to not having enough memory its just a bad art design that 2k seems to be content with, I'm not going to use the "L" word but making more then half the arena dark does make things easier as far as crowd detail goes.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. ESPN NBA Basketball was a treat.
Well, this looks like a 2k basketball game.
I hardly ever spend time looking at the game in replay or anything, so I'll withhold any judgement until I see an actual gameplay video that wasn't shot in between games of Snake on a Motorola RAZR.
20 years in the making and all we got is a lousy trailer.
from the outside, it looks like they're treating their 20th anniversary like another day at the office. Nothing groundbreaking yet (the myleague blog was great)
but to see some actual gameplay and more than a few screenshots with ratings would be nice (seriously these screeshots are getting stale by the day)
Man, I appreciate you guys that spot things that are small to me because a lot of small things makes the game better.
But I also dislike it sometimes because things I never paid attention to, y’all bring it to light with examples and I am looking like “Wow. That is bad” and it starts making me see those things wrong with the game I never saw lol. A lot of times I try not to even look at the examples anymore because it’ll make me not like the game a little less because that “thing” is now bothering me.

NBA 2k5 was my ish, but I was like 9 or 10, so idk lol Played well to me. Never liked Live even back then, aside from the All Star weekend stuff.

It just feels like a marketing thing. If it weren't for MyLeague, I wouldn't even be looking at this game

Thankfully, 2K4 was an anomaly and 2K5 was the start of the slow crawl back. Though, the PS2/XBox gen never quite shook free of all the remnants of 2K4. Stuff like this would still pop up from time to time:

Strange era in 2K basketball right there.
Wait a minute, you guys are talking about 2K4 and I wan't here. I would like to be pm'ed next time...
2K4 was the worst. Not the worst 2K, the worst this century. Those of you who like to throw into the air the "This is the worst 2K ever" every now and then, you guys are spoiled.
2K4 literally removed 3/4 of what was in 2K3, and didn't add anything back except for presentation/graphics. For example, 2K4 had no low post game whatsoever, I'm totally serious.
    Edit: Nice trailer.

Just from 5 seconds in i can already tell Westbrook is not scanned. Could be wrong, but i doubt it.

Yeah i was thinking the same along with Harden. I'm not sure if their contract is up with EA yet. Westbrook's should be it's been 4 years since he's was the coverboy for live 16. But who knows.

    What’s stopping you??

Everyone and their mom complaining whenever any of us criticize 2k’s art direction.
At least ball looks better. Everything else looks about the same.

Personally, I'm getting tired of reading about the lighting in EVERY thread with screenshots and gameplay. Just have a dedicated thread to the topic with examples and call it a night. It's annoying in the same manner it was annoying last year when dude kept complaining about the Bucks court at every opportunity.
I respect your right to voice your complaint about the art direction, but just maybe...just maybe it would be nice to read something different.

This move should be added to the game by now.
and a trigger for normal "Fake Pass" when driving to the basket shouldnt be just an animation or a layup package.
The Best way to judge a trailer in my opinion is if the trailer got you excited for the game...Honestly it was meh i expected more than a .55 second trailer we are 30 days from this game dropping and all we've been giving is screentshots a .55 second trailer and some gameplay tweets from Mike Wang @Beluba whoever is head of marketing over there at 2k needs to get it togther Asap!

To be fair, I think the Vets of this board have pretty much seen it all at this point. The NBA 2K12 video was the last trailer that got me excited, but that Eminem song was hot, and the way they cut away from one action to transition to another was a nice touch! The trailer was the reason why I bought that particular album.

    ??
How do you show off gameplay in a hype trailer?

The thing is that the actual arenas do have the subtle differences in the rim and ball sounds and everything else that was in the trailer. It's just bizarre that they didn't record the most noticeable component in what differentiates arenas in the crowds. It's like the recorded everything but. If they did all that then it shouldn't be too hard to mic up the different arenas and put that in game as well.

They did, the crowds have different sound per arena - turn everything but the crowd off and record it and go into each arena, and compare them - they're different. Crowds are mostly white noise though so it's not like someone is gonna say 'omg that's totally the Pacers crowd!' from listening to it.

It's a really nice "little thing". Especially for someone like me who plays ML and plays in all the different arenas. I don't get the hate the video got. The way some of these guys act you would think it was false advertisement or something. Then again, some of them live to complain. I'd prefer they got crowd noise right too but it's still a nice touch. If 2K focuses on the crowd atmosphere this year it'll only add to the overall presentation.

I think my response was confusing - i was saying 2K did record the crowd in each arena. You can tell if you turn up only the crowd and compare arenas in 2K18.
They could stand to improve the 'pop' of the reactions/cheers, and recognize runs more.. but i definitely don't think it's really a 'weak' point, unless you're expecting every game to be treated like a playoff game. I think it's fairly realistic overall.

Ahh, really. See I didn't know that. I'm gonna pay a little bit closer attention to the crowd noise. Maybe play more with my surround set on. I don't think the crowd sounds terrible either. But like you said, it could use a bit more pop.

Recently played myleague for the first time and was blown away by the crowd sounds . I use a home theater set .
