NBA 2K18 Prelude Arrives on September 8 For Xbox One and PlayStation 4

As seen at the end of the latest NBA 2K18 developer diary video, the Prelude will make its return to NBA 2K18 on September 8 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. No details have been provided yet, but it should give fans an opportunity to create your MyPLAYER and possibly play through some games. Once we get more details, we will post them. Until then, SPECULATE!

UPDATE: During today’s 2KCast, Ronnie and LD2K mentioned NBA 2K18’s Prelude will be completely different from NBA 2K17. More details in the coming weeks.

  1. Is it safe to over-analyze this picture? Because I'm really weary about it. The model looks decent, but I'm really worried about that hair texture. Nothing new is shown here. That's not a new skin color, those are the same lips that have been in-game, same preset eyes and eyebrows, and most importantly the hair texture. If they pull this nonsense again where all hairstyles aren't available in different textures and I have to look like Little Richard just to get a mohawk I'm gonna be pissed. With no visible option to dye it a la Alan Crabbe or Schoder
Obviously this screenshot wasn't put out by 2K, but this it's not looking good, at all.

Not that bad of a wait. ALSO; created players WILL blend in this year with the new body types and players

    Where did you hear this?
Edit: Nevermind, I found it. Nice.

didn't even bother to give it a shot last year, plz drop a quck match demo also.

Yeah me neither. Not interested in Prelude personally.
    But to each their own.
Hope those who do enjoy it..!

My friend I believe you are overreacting.
So much still yet to come.

Possibly (Which I acknowledged in my post) but for a company criticized for the look of it's players and created players for years, I would think that if they were going to allow a picture to be used, it'd show off some improvements. They were heavily criticized for Steph & KD's bodies last year and they made it a point to show that they fixed those because as a consumer product, it's just good PR to show that some work went into fixing issues.
It's bad PR to show an aspect of your product that you were criticized for with no discernible updates or fixes. Even if it is actually fixed in-game, showing it publicly for the first time, with no evidence of correction is bad business.
I didn't go preorder this game (That I've preordered every year since 2K6?) this year because I needed to see them address player look and MyLeague. When they did that, I went right to GameStop. Imagine if somebody was waiting for CAP news and the first thing they get is this screenshot. If this would have leaked first, I may have decided not to buy it. Again, it's not directly from 2K, but I'm sure they approved it and this is not a good look.
If it's one thing i hate about the way 2K does it's marketing is this. The lack of any real info/gameplay given to us is ridiculous. We basically don't even have an idea of what the game is going to be like before we buy it. A trailer, prelude, and screenshots are not telling us what we need to know! I need raw 5 on 5 gameplay.
I think last years prelude demo had annoying pop ups, and a game timer when focusing on 5 vs 5 gameplay. That is the area of the game i like testing out before i make purchase. I have no interest in the my career stuff in a demo. Give players an option to play a vs quick game without any pop ups.
Nice to have this a week before it drops but nothing major for me as I've honestly gravitated away from mycareer each year since they had the D-League and Summer League in it.

Jordan logo is interesting. Wonder if that means the Jordan rec center will be the playable mode in the prelude.

I'm willing to bet it has to do with the prelude starting at the Jordan Brand Classic and going from there.

they always announce the price info first. this year was no exception, they announced the price months ago and there isn't even one gameplay video or a screenshot lol.
blah blah edition 90 dollars, blah blah edition 60 dollars.
wonder who else announce the price first..

This is the best guess I think.
I doubt Jordan Rec Center returns unless it works completely differently.
This is nice news though...now I need to see this revamped CAP system. And I'm not talking about shoes and hair and body types.

Nothing's been confirmed, but its 99% MyPlayer themed yeah?
If not, I may be interested.

    This ^^^^
Have zero interest in myplayer, never have.
Should be an exhibition match demo really.

Its like you recently told someone who said they werent interested in legends.....we all have our own interests, haha
That said, im not a big MyCareer guy either...ill probably spend most of my time in scrimmage....Which hopefully, like someone else said- doesnt have a bunch of annoying pop ups....
Either way, im happy I get to play the game before it releases, ill take that over some footage...

Heh, true - but you'd think quick match would surely cater for everyone, right?
Anyhow, sure folk will enjoy themselves. I'll kick back and wait for the full game to drop.

    It's called Timing.
Think about it, if they released all info June 1st, people would be hyped until late June and it would begin to die down as they played other games, etc. then when the game released it wouldn't have the same buzz. The way they do it is a slow build up to the hype then hit you with it within weeks of the release, so at your peak "hype" you buy the game. Now this probably works better on the casuals than your person that was buying no matter what.
Also, the less info about 2k18 the more relevant 2k17 feels, and thus the more people will spend on it.

Ironically, this will be the best version of NBA 2K18. They'll drop the game, and ruin it 3 weeks later with game patches. To me, NBA 2K was a great game on release for 3 years in row. If I could avoid the patches, I would, but my favorite mode is PNO.
Do you like NBA 2k? If you do, you'll like NBA2k18. Simple.
"I need to see this or that, not that or this!" Every damn year smh. You'll get your info as it releases, but you've had yearrrrrrrrrs to make up your mind on whether you like the franchise or not.
Don't pre-order if you're unsure. I've already pre-ordered, like I do every year, because I already know I'm going to love this game without ANY info.

Can't wait. Gonna test this out and if the gameplay is up to par then I'll preorder.

Graphics look amazing but I'm still cautious as hell about gameplay like you.

Most definitely lol. I'm seeing some things I like and some things I don't like so we'll see. But I'm glad they're dropping a demo though. The graphics are making this real enticing but I'm gonna be in 2KU testing out everything before I buy this one lol.

I want to know if backpeddle animation still hinders movement. Also curious if paint protector actually protects the paint. These are the only things I'm looking for for me to preorder.

Prelude was pretty good last year. Needless to say in a year not as rushed that we'll see the same.
It was the after patches and shooting changes that did the game in.

That, and an entire month of nothing but disconnects and fake losses in Pro-AM.
October was not a good time for 2k17.

Wish I still had a PS4. NBA 2K demo/prelude is my favourite time of the gaming year.

I'm just hoping that we don't get another Prez type of story. I don't mind a storyline, but not a linear story without variance

exactly, just give me dubs vs cavs or something. lol

I hate when you can't skip over the intro. I wanted to create another player but I just didn't feel like sitting through the intro.

Just let me skip through the story if I don't want any part of it.
I think they eventually patched that in, but you could only skip if you'd seen it all once. A whole lot of us don't want to watch any cut scenes at all.

LOL I really want to start playing as soon as midnight hits and start making YouTube vids again.
The CAPS shown in that promo vid look way more realistic than the CAPS in 2k17. Unless you are Hourus(sp?) Grant or Tgor it was next to impossible to make a CAP that looked like a real person. If you were trying to create a white CAP it was even tougher imo. Won't be able to judge this till I play it myself but the CAPS in the video are a positive. More hairstyle options is a must...

I didn't think they would do this again this year. Absolutely a deal breaker for me with the Prelude if I will buy or not. Same thoughts as you. Everything so far is good. That improved gameplay though. All I care about.

Perhaps MyCareer will finally start you out with a 75 ovl, 1st round pick rookie in the middle of a Jordan rookie showcase type of game before the season starts? MyCareer picture had the Jordan logo on it.
I too wonder how the Jordan logo means for the Prelude/MyCareer. Because it isn't just a coincidence or free promotion. My thoughts could be them bringing(back?) the Jordan Showcase.
Like I said, I'm tired of the forced storylines. But unfortunately that's how it will most likely be. I just hope they allow variance and allow you to not have the same experience twice unless you follow same exact path.
I miss the Last gen MyPlayer. With Combine, Summer League, Showcase, Pre-Draft Interviews, Suggests trades/FAs. Out of the current Gen, I liked 2k15 the most as far as direction. No cheesy story, cutscenes with NBA players. So if they could mix Last Gen features with a 2k15-esque story, then I would be happy
Hmmm what if this prelude has an online mode. I remember one of the demos being online years ago.

I wonder if the max wingspan issue will be addressed. Will their be any worthwhile point to making somebody who doesn't have a max wingspan this year?
Because if their isn't some kind of deterrent for this, the court is gonna feel tiny again

That's going to take quite a while to figure out. The good dudes at NBA2K Lab were enormously helpful last year but it came months after release.

Make max wingspan lower your dribbling skills, that will stop a ton of people from maxing it out, and it makes sense as normally NBA players with abnormally long wingspans aren't the best with their handles compared to others.

And even then, there were some things 2k labs could not test, or wouldn't cover all the variables. They were the best if you were trying to find the easiest jumpshot to compliment your cheesy dribbling.

I thought, while not a deterrent, you did get a shooting bonus with a shorter wingspan. Was it not enough to prevent everyone from going max? Honest question.
I did have a couple of shooters I played with that had minimum wingspan for this very reason.

I think a minimum wingspan gave you a boost of +3 to shooting attributes. I maxed my 6'7 shooter's wingspan and he topped out at 91 for each of the shooting categories. And when you have all the badges and whatever, 94 and 91 is really no difference. Being able to play passing lanes better and having a higher reach was far more beneficial than those extra 3 points in shooting. But a lot of people in the beginning thought it'd be a significant difference.

    Post notes:
    D. Lillard got upset he got a 89 rating. 2K took it down to please him?
Also John wall got upset about he's 90 rating and has beef that Lonzo Ball has the highest rating for a rookie - 80!
So what does the community think about this?
Also do you think 2K is catering to these NBA Players ego?

It allows you to basically be a lockdown defender without the archetype too. My playmaker constantly gets held up or put into forcefields by tall sharps, PFs, Glass Cleaners. It's really hard to get past them at times. No such thing as being able to exploit a mismatch with a slower bigger defender on me. Going to just make a Point Forward this year if this is the case again.

Long arms are not equivalent to being a lockdown defender. LDDs cause a bunch of ball handling issues (bobbling the pass, bad pass, etc.) that you don't get from just having long arms.
My 6' playmaking PG didn't have issues with tall sharpshooters. They are so slow. SS by themselves are slow, then add height, and they were too slow to guard my PG.

I didn't mean they are literally LDDs, but they get preferential treatment on defense regardless of build. I can definitely get by them more often than not, but I definitely notice a difference with how they can hold you up. It's LDD-esque without any of the other perks. Makes me wonder if I should drop my 6'4" playmaker and make more of a wing/point forward.

Sadly I built my Point Forward late on in the game cycle, but he is by far my most dominant player.
I haven't given him any upgrades to standing shooting but can still put up 30 points in walk on, while shutting down opponents due to max wingspan at 6'9 with max D, athleticism and playmaking.
My 6'5 playmaker with no D ratings was pretty solid but the lack of shot contest hurt me... its all about speed to get to the right spot and the difference between an LDD and playmaker is negligible there in 2k17
