ABC pulled the plug on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on air this week indefinitely. This decision came after the late-night talk show host’s controversial comments regarding Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Portnoy stepped into analyze the situation and stated his firing isn’t a part of cancel culture.

Portnoy argued that cancel culture is when people go out of their way to find dirt on someone to have them punished. He stated that Kimmel’s comments were offensive in real-time, and the subsequent suspension of his show is the consequence of those actions.

“With Kimmel getting canned I’m seeing lots of people talking about the hypocrisy of cancel culture. To me, cancel culture is when people go out of their way to dig up old tweets, videos, etc. looking for dirt on somebody they don’t like in an effort to get them fired. Like if Kimmel got canceled for sh-t he did on ‘The Man Show,’ that would be cancel culture. But when a person says something that a ton of people find offensive, rude, dumb in real time and then that person is punished for it, that’s not cancel culture. That is consequences for your actions.”

Portnoy Says Kimmel’s Suspension Is About Consequences, Not Cancel Culture

If you’re Dave Portnoy, you know you’re in a position where your opinion matters. So, perhaps you need to be careful about addressing topics as sensitive as this one.

Netizens perceived Jimmy Kimmel’s indefinite suspension from the air as another hit on free speech. However, the punishment might not have been unjustified given the context. Kimmel joked that Charlie Kirk’s shooter was part of the “MAGA gang.”

While you’d think this punishment mainly came as part of the poor timing of the joke, you’d be wrong. ABC was pressured to act this way since it was suggested that Disney might face dire consequences if it didn’t punish Kimmel.
