MLB The Show 25 Gameplay Interview with Chris Gill

We recently had the chance to chat with Chris Gill, the gameplay director for MLB The Show 25 at San Diego Studio, and asked him some questions from the community. The game drops at midnight on the east coast for anyone getting the Digital Deluxe version, that’s just over six hours away!

Are base runners always going to dive back into the base they’re on when there’s a pitch out or a ball in the dirt? It happens like 99% of the time.

We can confirm that we’re working on a patch and will have updates soon.

How does the new “pop time” attribute work? Does it only affect how fast a catcher releases the ball?

Yes. We have all the catchers’ data, and we represent their average pop time. From the time he catches it till the time it gets to second base. Defense matters more than ever this year, so it really helps throw out those speedsters when you have a catcher behind the dish with a solid pop time.

Could you tell us what sort of PS5 Pro Enhanced improvements we’ll see in the game at launch or possibly patched later in the year?

While the game runs smoothly on the PlayStation 5 Pro, it does not include any exclusive enhancements or special features beyond the standard performance.

Are there more infielder error animations, can fly balls or pop ups be lost in the sun?

Fly balls and pop ups cannot be lost in the sun.

Are there more feet first slides like hook and popup in the game?

Yes, we have new swim moves for all bases except 1B and new definite safe slides at home. What’s important to know here is that these are additions to a full slate of slides that cover all situations your base runners my find themselves in. We have a variety of slides, including Headfirst hook slides to both sides, straight in headfirst slides, feet first hook slides to both sides, straight in feet first slides, pop up slides, and toe in slides.

Are there any new gameplay tuning sliders in the game?

While we didn’t add any new sliders to the game this year, but we have almost 40 sliders that allow you to tune the game, very specially to how you like to play the game. They are fully customizable and easy to access.

Has there been any sim logic tuning to reduce the number of complete games by starting pitchers to better reflect real life MLB.

Yes, you will now see bullpen management much closer to how MLB teams utilize their staff and lower pitch counts overall.

Will the sweeper make its debut this year?

Yes, pitchers who have the Sweeper pitch in their arsenal in real life will have it in our game. It’s a version of our slider with more break (sweep) and is typically thrown a little slower than your traditional slider.

Can we turn off the blue circle around fielders?

As the user-controlled player, you will always see the Player Marker as it’s extremely important to know who you are controlling. Very specifically on hits that are between players. Without it, you could accidentally move the wrong player, in turn, moving your fielder away from where you are trying to run.

Can I see a player’s career stats against a pitcher when making my lineup?

Yes, while setting your lineup, you can use triangle toggle over to career stats.

Any new throwback uniforms?

We added 16 MLB throwback uniforms this year, from 1936 to 2016 for what amounts to 320+ MLB throwbacks in MLB The Show 25. All the new throwbacks will be available at launch.

Here are a few examples of the additions:

  • 1937 Home and Road Atlanta “Boston” Braves
  • 1969 Home and Road San Diego Padres
  • 1987 Road Alt Texas Rangers
  • 1994 Home and Road Mets
  • 2001 Home and Road Pirates
