MLB The Show 24: How To Change Positions, Explained

Some players need a new challenge.

During any Road to the Show playthrough in MLB The Show 24, you could get bored with your current position or you’re not getting any playtime due to a superstar currently fielding your position. In either scenario, it certainly helps to know how to change your position so you can see the field more or get a much-needed change of scenery.

However, changing your position in MLB The Show 24 isn’t as simple as clicking a few buttons and then bam, you’re playing second instead of left field. Instead, you have to wait for the right time, which could take longer than you might want. If you’re patient, though, you are fully able to change positions in MLB The Show 24.

We’ll show you exactly how to do that and what you need to do to make it happen in the guide below.

Changing Positions In MLB The Show 24

While you might think you’re able to change your position by speaking to your manager or going through a complicated process in the Road to the Show menu, the steps are much more straightforward than that. MLB The Show 24 requires you to request a position change through your agent, which isn’t necessarily how it works in the real MLB but it makes sense in a virtual world.

During the early stages of a Road to the Show playthrough, you will get several calls from your agent that pop up in between games and seasons. Your agent calls you to check in on your current situation and asks if there’s anything they can do to make you happier. Specifically, the agent will reference your place in the batting order and the defensive position you’re currently playing.

If you want to change your position, ask your agent for a position change. This is done by telling your agent you request to change your situation and hone in on a positional change on defense. Once you ask your agent for a change, they’ll ask what position you want to play, and you can tell them. Then, after a short while, your position will officially change on the team.

There are some caveats with positional changes in MLB The Show 24, however. For example, if you’re a shortstop, you can’t change to a pitcher. Even if you could, your OVR rating would be so low that you’d be buried on the depth chart and not receive a single look on the mound. If you’re a two-way player or a pitcher, though, you can change to a new position in the infield or outfield.

It’s also worth noting that if you’ve already received numerous calls from your agent and told them that everything is fine, a positional change will likely not be optional. This is due to the positional change option being removed when your agent calls you or your agent will stop calling you altogether.

So, if you want to change positions, make sure to do it as early as possible in your playthrough. Players have reported they could change positions after several years, but most report that they don’t have the option once they make the transition to a veteran player.

Should You Change Positions In MLB The Show 24?

For the most part, a positional change is ultimately a good thing if it means you’ll play more and stick with a Road to the Show playthrough. However, you always want to check the depth chart of the team you’re on before making any positional change.

For example, if you’re playing for the Cleveland Guardians and stuck at second base, it’s probably not wise to request a change to third base. Jose Ramirez is manning the hot corner for that franchise for the next several years unless another Francisco Lindor situation plays out in your playthrough. So, while you can request a change to third base, you’ll be stuck behind Ramirez and the change will actually yield less playing time.

As long as you’re checking to see who’s in front of you on the depth chart before requesting a change, the situation usually plays out well for you.

How The Agent Calls Work In MLB The Show 24

As the entire positional change option in MLB The Show 24 relies on your agent, let’s talk about how the agent calls work in Road to the Show.

Unfortunately, there’s no set time when your agent will give you a ring and ask about your situation. I’ve had playthroughs where my agent was calling me fairly frequently during my rookie and second-year seasons, but then other playthroughs I don’t hear from them hardly at all. There’s also no way for you to call your agent, you always have to wait on them to call you.

This can lead to some serious frustration, especially if, for whatever reason, your agent doesn’t call you when you want them to. Of course, another situation could arise where your agent finally does call you and the option to request a positional change isn’t there. As previously mentioned, this is likely due to your player already establishing them in the big leagues and the option to change positions seemingly goes away after a certain amount of time.

All of this basically means your Road to the Show agent is extremely unpredictable. Whether they’re straight up not calling you or not giving you the option to change positions, having to rely on your agent for this key feature can be quite annoying. Hopefully, the system works differently in MLB The Show 25, which is already making some key changes to the Road to the Show mode that look to improve upon several quality-of-life features.

In MLB The Show 24, though, you have to hope your agent calls and asks about you, otherwise, you’re likely stuck playing the same position for your whole career.
