We will have our video breakdown a little later today.

  1. Honestly, you could have told me that was a trailer for 17,18, or 19 and i would have believed you. Didnt see any new animations for dives or jumping catches which is kinda shocking. It just feels like they've really plateau'd on this console/hardware. Looking forward to getting more info.
I’m ready for next gen. Game is really starting to show its age. The player movements and animations are tired and the once mind blowing graphics are stale and look dated. The player models are a decade past overdue for an upgrade.
I’m excited because it’s baseball and the game is still solid, but nowhere near where I would like to be with the anticipation of the last decent sports game’s release coming up.

    Haha. Good one.

It’s a pipe dream I know, but it’s also a glaring issue that never gets fixed.

Awesome to see Sheffield and Big Papi in the game! When they were showing the Yankee at the end I thought for sure it was going to be Jeter.

Nice to see that MVP, Deluxe and Anniversary Editions will be able to get Early Access on 3/13/20. Even without the upgraded editions, the official launch is 3/17/20 which is still about two weeks earlier than last few years.
The game is only 7 weeks away. I know they usually release info around this time every year but it really feels more around the corner than usual.
Pretty cool they added the big Delta sign in Yankee Stadium.
However, depending on whether or not changes were made to Franchise mode, even minor at this point, I'll probably hold off til PS5. I got '19 for free on PS Plus and I think it'll be able to hold me over.
Yeah, I'm ready for the next generation of consoles. Trailer looked about the same as all the others this gen. We know the core gameplay will be good, but man those player models and animations are really showing their age.
I'm hoping they really decided to focus on gameplay fixes and AI improvements this year which accounts for the lack of basically anything new in the trailer. Let's hope...

Remember when the threads for The Show trailers were pages upon pages of people finding tidbits of hidden gems? Not seeing much here other than a bunch of dances and minor mis-plays in the fielding animations being improved. Obviously theres more to it than that but I'm going to REALLY need to be wowed during the streams for me to buy this. Stale is a bit of an understatement unfortunately.
Also I'm very confused about the Nike logo. Sometimes it's on the jerseys and sometimes it isn't. I'm hoping that is just because of the trailer being filmed on different builds at different times because if not that seems like a horrible misrepresentation of the teams whether you like the Nike logo or not.
Looks fine. Although, I can't seem to go into a thread or a video comment section for MLB 20 without people requesting, begging, and demanding customization options. I'm really curious to see how they respond to that this year as we approach details on the game. It's going to be awkward at this point of there is nothing, but I guess we went through a similar thing with franchise mode last year. Is this why they disabled comments on the YouTube Trailer? As is, they don't have my preorder yet.

I'm sure come release date, all uniforms being used for 2020 season will have the Nike logo.

Yeah, this could have been a trailer for 14, 15, or 16 as well.

The player models haven't really changed since the PS3 era. They are still the same blocky models, with static jersey's. And yeah, the animations are still jerky and just not good.
MLB 19 was the first time I didn't buy the game on release since MLB 09 and nothing I see here so far is convincing me to get MLB 20. Since it's been announced that they will be releasing MLB the Show on other platforms in the near-ish future, if by some miracle it's also released in the PC, I would buy it in a heartbeat. At least modders could then bring the game up to date with other modern games. But I fear this may be another pipe dream and I'll probably just stick with Out of the Park Baseball. At least it has a proper simulation engine (yes it's not without it's own set of problems too).

Did you miss the part with all the dance moves?
A lot of animations look the same, but I didn't expect them to be a whole lot different anyways. As someone previously mentioned, the new animation/scenario of trying to decide how to field a ball in the outfield depending on where you are compared to the ball, looks cool.
I already pre ordered '20. I'm just praying that the frame rate isn't a disaster at launch like '19 was. If the game plays smooth, I know I'll enjoy the heck out of it. Ive bought every version of the Show since '07 I believe. I wasn't expecting a huge leap between '19 and '20, just please play smoothly!
Also can't wait for PS5 and sports gaming on next gen, hopefully it makes a nice leap.
Unless they are going out with a bang and really blow me away with some details. I'm skipping this year to wait for PS5.

Man these animations and graphics are looking dated. Really need the next gen overhaul. Hopefully franchise has a decent amount of changes and enhancements or I may have to stick with 19 until this game is like 20 bucks in the summer.

I still play Exhibition games in '19. Found a decent updated roster through last week I think. '19 is a heck of a game, definitely worthy of playing for a few years. I'm just a sucker for the new game each year, I always buy the new version.
The kind of stale graphics initially had me leaning towards skipping this year, but with the 26 man roster and 3 batter minimum rule changes (assuming they program those in) I'm afraid I'll be in on day one. I like the challenge of building a bullpen with that rule in mind, and having an extra guy on the bench will also be a nice treat. Just for fun, it would be nice if they programmed in a 6th starter spot that does NOT require a name and is simply skipped in the schedule if left blank.
WINTRUST on Wrigley, DELTA sign on Yankee Stadium... pretty cool touch! This little things helps A LOT the immersion on the game, let's hope they bring a bunch of those

Looks like a new flyball fielding system. Hopefully this also means more fielder differentiation and more differences in full range and effective range in the field.
They made a good step in that direction in 19, but the fact that I had to crank errors to 10 means there is still some work to be done.
Also maybe differences for franchise vs DD finally? So sick and tired of playing an offline game that was obviously balanced for online play. At least sliders are good, but it doesn't solve the inherent design problem.
Definitely maxed out on this console generation.
One thing that really bugs me that will hopefully change on PS5 is the stiff, floating jersey sleeves.
The most they can offer year over year at this point is new player dances/celebrations, new legends, and some simple visuals like the Delta sign at Yankee Stadium.
I'm still going to buy, but with low expectations for many changes from 19. I have totally given up hope that Franchise will get any major improvements... I have been telling myself "this is gonna be the year" since 14 or 15. Done with that.
Not faulting SDS for the simple fact that they've done all they can with this generation. They've done a great job and it is still the best sports video game on the market.

Saw we're getting a bunch of new "quirks" aka badges, so hopefully we get an expanded roster editor and can edit those badges for players.

Those looked like RTTS perks to me, honestly. Different from quirks/badges as you're thinking of them.
I suppose it could be a sort of tiered "badges" system across the whole game, but we'll see. They just seemed too situational to be quirks.
I know I’m a little late to the party but here’s everything I noticed:
    NEW LEGEND Gary Sheffield
    Mets old black alternate uniforms
    NEW LEGENED John Franco
    Mariners old home uniforms
No “Jr” on the back of Griffey’s uniform
No Jordan catchers gear for Yadier Molina
    Juan Soto crotch grab
    New Nationals uniforms
Mallex Smith isn’t wearing dirty mids
New Brewers road alternate uniforms (with the old stance socks)
No Nike catchers gear on Manny Piña
    New postgame celebrations
    New run scoring celebrations
    New group dugout celebrations
    New “bad reaction” fielding animations
    NEW LEGEND Shane Victorino
    New quirks (for RTTS?)
    Tiers for those new quirks
    New “Showdown” (Diamond Dynasty)
Clean shaven Gerrit Cole on the Yankees
    Didi Gregorius on the Phillies
    Anthony Rendon on the Angels
New fly ball locator with colors (bad fielders are bad) - Mark Trumbo
Players out of position are bad - Tim Anderson
Good fielders are good - Byron Buxton
    New Twins alternate uniforms
    Another team dugout dance
    New Nationals unis again
    Another team dugout dance
    Better Pete Alonso facescan??
Tim Anderson bat slam from 2019
March to October is back - including a first half analysis
Expanded personalities in RTTS through challenges
Increased relationships in RTTS when playing (2B-SS DP connection)
    New Padres home uniforms
    Tommy Pham on the Padres
    Ronald Acuña facescan
    No SSK glove on Acuña
Javy Baez caught stealing point from the WBC
    NEW LEGEND David Ortiz

Finally! I have hated the "The Show" placeholder they've used for the past few years.
Anyone else hear that all of the minor league players will be in the game at launch? I’m sure the OSFM guys will still come out with improvements, but that is huge. According to the YouTube video I watched that discussed the new features, Sony apparently reached a deal where they can add all the minor leaguers without waiting for them to be called up.

I highly doubt this... This would be a huge undertaking for Sony to negotiate with each minor leaguer as they dont have a players union.

It sound more like it is just going to be full A rosters versus all the players. They have no union and it would require a contract for likeness with each individual player and that would be a lot of contracts. The minor Leaguers in the game will still be fake players.
The new scorebug has some similarities to the AT&T SportsNet one that a handful of teams use in real-life. I've wanted a scorebug that mimics that one for awhile. Hopefully, the ones that mimic NBC and FOX are left intact.
I hope the launch on the PS5 goes more smoothly than the PS4. I also remember them saying that the lack of memory on the PS3 was preventing them from doing things they still haven't done on the PS4. I am excited though. Got to play the Beta and its definitely a day one purchase for me.

Does OOTP actually negotiate with each minor leaguer, or are they using name alone, since its a text based sim and they aren't using player likeness?
I know that OOTP has full minor league rosters, but I've never read or heard if they do it similar to the process of the OSFM guys or if they actually negotiate a deal to use the minor league player's likeness?

Now if only they could fix the out of town scoreboard below it so the scores rotate properly that would be great.
From looking at the video i saw the Portland Seadogs a double aa team in it and checked the names in the video one was Konner Wade so i checked the SeaDogs site and there was his name so we could possibly have real minor league names in game.
even w/o a MiLB union it could be very easy to get a contract for most minor leaguers. it could be that part of MLB's deal with Sony to expand to outside consoles, standard language in a basic minor league contracts could be added to include rights for MLB to use those MiLB'ers likeness in video games. this wouldn't be as difficult at it would seem at all. it would just need to be seen by MLB as a necessary priority to get that language added to minor league player contracts. and THAT would be the major hurdle.

Hmm, that's pretty interesting. Seems like the guy hasn't been on a major league roster yet (and his name/likeness wasn't in '19) so I can't find anything that disproves it right now.
The pitcher from earlier in the video with the dynamic challenge (Trevor Oaks) also exists IRL, but there's something different with him - he's been at the MLB level before with the Royals, and thus is already in the players union even though he was sent back down at some point.

EDIT: And potentially Russell Wilson (rights held by NYY) and Kyler Murray (rights held by OAK)

Where do you see Wade in the video? He's a pitcher and they show the Sea Dogs hitting, and then a double play ball.

His name is in the scorebug at :56.
This is exactly the sort of "hidden gem" SDS would do, if it in fact turns out that even SOME 0-service time minor leaguers are in the game.

Ehh, the other poster (mcarr74) should get all the credit for finding it, all I did was try to validate it.
And since I can't say that it's incorrect based on info that's out there, I'm in the "cautiously optimistic but still excited" stage for what it could mean.

One thing that really bugs me that will hopefully change on PS5 is the stiff, floating jersey sleeves.

If they don't have uniform cloth physics on the PS5, then their game engine is inefficient and they need to create a new one. If their PS4 game engine was more current, it would handle cloth physics now at 60 FPS.

Damn, I hope this is legit with real minors.

    Absolute game changer.
lol let's the roster makers actually enjoy more playing and less puzzle-piecing.
If the game is going to have real MiLB players with full minor league rosters, I hope this means we are going to have player card stat tracking for minor leagues. I know this is in the game, because it appears in your RTTS player card. Would be cool to be able to see where guys played and how they did in the minors.

Same here...Very intriguing news! My question is, If the minor league players are in the game, they would have to have generic appearances, right? Or would they create their appearance like they do when they’re unable to obtain face scans? I’m hoping they have similar appearances to the players but man that seems like a lot of work to squeeze into a development cycle. Especially with the volatility of player movement in the minors. Will be curious to hear more about this.
Between this and the rebranding and relocation of teams in franchise, us franchise heads have a lot to look forward to!

Not really that difficult as they probably have face scans of some of the players. When they show up to spring training each year any player including NRI's and MiLB guys can get scanned. So, theoretically if a lot of these guys had already been scanned it's just piecing them together.
And if MiLB guys are really in then I am sure this is something they have worked on for more than a few development cycles.

I just have this feeling that this series is starting to head in a great direction, starting with MLB The Show 20. And with next gen right around the corner and them going multiplatform, I just have a good feeling that we're gonna see some really cool things in the coming years

Regarding franchise mode. I hope they found a way to get rotating interleague schedules in or custom schedules. That way those of us that want new schedules every year won't have ti halt our franchises in the off season and wait for the next year's game to drop to get a real/different schedule.

I really hope they aren't rolling with all the same equipment as last year. The nike cleats looked really bad.

The only year I can remember them having updated equipment in the first trailer was MLB 15 when they were showing off the new licenses and even then it was in specific clips. I wouldn’t worry yet.

A lot of clips in the initial trailers are always on older models of the game, which is why we aren’t consistently seeing new equipment, faces, stances, Nike swooshes on every jersey, etc throughout the trailer unless it’s the emphasis of the scene

Also, pretty cool to see that TA7 bat flip and swagger, love that kid.

unfortunately it doesnt look like they added the goose island section out in right field. bummer.
I wonder how "Perfect-Perfect" swinging will translate to Directional Hitting (DH). I have been on the DH bandwagon going back to MVP 05 and was thrilled when they added it to MLBTS a few years back.
Many of the issues I have with its implementation also plague Zone Hitting so it never really made sense for me to make the switch. However, now that they are going to maximize batter ratings on "Perfect-Perfect" swings (Perfect Timing + Perfect PCI placement), what does that mean for Directional Hitting, when timing is the only thing you can get perfect?
I hope there is a reward for Timing and Push/Pulling (in-lieu of PCI placement) the pitch appropriately. Back in MVP 05 if you tried to pull an outside pitch or inside-out a pitch that you were jammed on the swing would result in:
    1. A BAD swing and miss, batter falling over almost
    2. or BAD contact (jammed/sawed off, foul tip, dribbler, etc..)
In MLBTS there has not been enough risk/reward with trying to pull/push the wrong pitch or even ground/hit in air the wrong the pitch. So I hope this will be DH's version of Perfect-Perfect.
I also think for DH they should make "perfect timing" harder, not impossible and based off player attributes to compensate as well with bad timing resulting in more swing and misses since PCI placement is not taken into account.
Again...interested to see if DH gets some love.
I feel like the people waiting for “big changes” with the PS5 are gonna be disappointed. Console generations don’t work the same way as they used too and there seems to be a concentrated effort to make the transition as smooth as possible for people by making games compatible on both systems for a couple years. It isn’t like the old days where a new console meant a new and hugely improved engine and overhaul. I could be wrong but considering that the current engine, despite what some think, plays an incredibly good representation of real life baseball. I don’t think there’s any plans for any kind of massive overhaul anytime soon. I could be wrong though 🤷🏻*♂️

I agree with what you say about the player models and their animations being a good representation of baseball. I love where both are now. What I want to see with the PS5 technology is an overhaul with the crowd, stadium atmosphere visuals, sounds, etc. Include all the stuff we see on Sounds of the Show on release day out of the box. Have different songs playing through the stadium for instance “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” by Charlie Daniels at the Braves Stadium or Latin music at Miami’s stadium. Have fully customizable draft boards that can be downloaded from the vault featuring real college, high school, and foreign players. Have fully customizable managers, coaches, and umpires also. Make it where teams can hire and fire managers and coaches and hire from other MLB teams or from MILB teams. This kind of stuff is what I want to see from the next gen consoles and The Show.

The bolded has nothing to do with development or technology and everything to do with licensing. SDS can't possibly pay for licenses to use all the copyrighted music that plays in real life baseball stadiums - and if they could, it wouldn't be worth it anyway. That's exactly why SOTS exists - so that the end users are able to import that kind of stuff privately.
I’d agree about atmosphere. I’d love if they could figure out how to replicate a playoff atmosphere. It’s missing from every single sports game on the market and it adds so much to real life. I wanna feel the epicness of a walk off HR

Agreed. I remember, and not to fault them, but the developers talking about all the things they were going to be able to do with the extra memory the PS4 would provide and how the PS3 was just maxed. With the launch of the PS4 version of the game I remember they rebuilt all of the stadiums and each year have made subtle changes and upgrades, but not a whole lot has changed. The biggest development on the PS4 seems to be the creation of Diamond Dynasty. I do hope that they will be able to do more now with a greater partnership with MLB and the fact that they will be moving to other consoles, but I think that may even have the opposite effect. The biggest jump with this Generation was '16? when the sole focus was on PS4, the graphics took a noticeable leap.
Now at the end of this generation I'm hearing the same stuff. The PS4 is maxed out and they will have greater capabilities etc. etc.

I agree. You can have the best game hardware on Earth. It doesn't matter. The game will only be as good as the software engine.

The ball physics for hitting and ball spins with pitching are night and day from the PS3 versions of the game.
The two biggest developments were year to year saves going into the PS4 generation and ball physics. Ball physics are simply far better than they ever were on the PS3. It all started with MLB 12 and has continually improved each iteration. Then after the move to the PS4 it really took off.
Honorable mention to defensive throwing urgency/animation improvements, Catcher trhrows on passed/blocked balls in the dirt improvements, OF routes to fly balls (depending on ratings) and audio drastically improving and quality of life SOTS improvements.
My hopes for PS5 is much better AI on and off the diamond. And of course more gameplay improvements in terms of ball physics, collision detection, tagging, a true MLB replay system like they have in the league today, and a full franchise customization suite ala "NBA 2K My League".

While I mostly agree with you, there has to be a line in the sand as to when they make the jump to the next "version" of MLB The Show. I stumbled upon a video on YouTube that compared all the MLB The Show versions, going to back to the 989 studio releases on the PS1.
I saw some animations in the early PS3 MLB The Show versions (MLB The Show 08?), that are still present in MLBTS 20. The video did a great job showing how far the series has come, and how much better the graphics, gameplay, animations, ball physics, etc....have improved not just over the lifespan of the series, but year over year...which is great and appreciated!
But the engine, as a whole, needs a complete overhaul as it has effectively existed through the entire lifecycle of both the PS3 AND PS4. I would think that PS5 will be when we see this overhaul, albeit, not necessarily on the first release in 2021.

Is it a coincidence that Riden has become official and started his own brand the same year The Show teases full minor league rosters?

I really hope they aren't rolling with all the same equipment as last year. The nike cleats looked really bad.

Yeah bro ... I’m sure we’ll get the new base equipment ... new need old school cleats too! And omg please Jordan brand! I’m guessing Jordan brand will have to come whenever they get Jeter

I think I notice some small improvements here or there, but dear lord does this game need a PS5 and grass and lighting overhauls. It just looks comically bad at certain angles.
For instance, any shot in that trailer with a wall in it just looks ridiculously low-res in depth, lighting, and the realism of what grass brings to the field. Nothing remotely looks like a photo even. It just looks so darn gamey to me.
Bro, that grass has got to go for PS5. Just tear whatever the hell you have up and start something new. It brings this game down, but lighting is even more important, and it just kinda sucks.
It's so old looking. I just can't bring myself to play this again.

What? This is exactly opposite, and I am not sure why you think this is true, nor do I know why people are agreeing.
The transition from PS2 to PS3 was actually the toughest gen for devs to transition to. PS3 was notoriously finicky and not a normal language for a lot of devs.
The PS4 and PS5 are basically one and the same for coding languages and opportunities.
In fact, the transition from PS4 to PS5 is super easy this time around, and the differences in power are going to be absolutely GIGANTIC.
If this game still looks like this on PS5, Sony needs to find a new developer.
I'm just going to wait for dirt, grass, and other MODS at this point, because the devs have no talent for it. What we have now looks terrible. Truth hurts.

You're definitely going to be disappointed of you think the PS5 is going to be THAT much different than a PS4. Will it be better? Absolutely. Is it going to be like night and day? No.
The biggest differences will likely come in the forms of over 60 FPS and way better load times and texture load due to that new hard drive technology.
Also keep it mind that the devs have to work on a 1 year development cycle still, in an era where 5 to 10 year development cycles are common. It is not easy for them to add or change anything.

which probably a lot to do with why the changes are gradual in the Show. if you compare say, Show 14 to 19, or Show 10 to 14, or Show 12 to 17, this is where/how to look at the progress the Studio has made in the last 10 years.

Pretty cool they added the big Delta sign in Yankee Stadium.
However, depending on whether or not changes were made to Franchise mode, even minor at this point, I'll probably hold off til PS5. I got '19 for free on PS Plus and I think it'll be able to hold me over.

Boston has the Citgo sign as well. Makes me wonder if we are getting several new advertisements in stadiums this year that we don’t know about yet.
