MLB The Show 20: 3rd Inning Program Updated With Keith Hernandez

A Breakout Keith Hernandez player program has been added to the 3rd Inning Program in MLB The Show 20 Diamond Dynasty. Diamond Keith Hernandez is an 88 overall with high contact ratings and great fielding — as you would probably expect. The player program has a total of 50 points, and much like most other programs, you can do this one offline or online.

  1. I always go for Cardinals players so I will be doing this (or attempting to) but there was one bullet point that really upset me under missions
Tally 8 hits online with Breakout Keith Hernandez (+10 points)

Couldn't that give offline players the same mission but double the requirements or something?
Yeah, they could, but this is how they've been doing these. It would be nice since then you wouldn't have to do all the moments to unlock it offline, but it's a design decision I suppose at this point.

All you have to do is complete all the moments then beat the Cards on all star and you will unlock him. Super simple.

I do not like multi-game Moments, even if they are easy. Makes me not want to mess with this at all
    Royals Baseball: Catch the Thrill!

Probably because by definition, something that is 5 games long isnt a ****ing "moment". It drives me nuts. The amount of dashboarding you have to do because even when you get perfect perfect with Hernandez, he only hits the ball 90mph makes this a massive pain in the ***.

Unlocking him is not the issue. The mission I mentioned is for 10 3rd inning program points. As an offline player who does not put 20 hours plus a week into the game I need as many ways to earn programs points as possible.

This is just one more example how they have made the game less fun this year. Multi game moments that can be blown because of BS (in one of my moments Hernandez was walked twice and hit by pitch once so it was kind of hard to get multiple hits). The fact that you have to exit back to the menu and reload into each new game and the fact that you can't even restart the first game without going back to the menu. 6 out of the 7 moments for Hernandez are multi game moments.
They are all all or nothing because they are tied to programs. These same moments last year would have earned us anywhere from 33 to 51 points (3 points for a single game and 5-8 points for a multi-game moment) instead of the 20 we get this year.

I unlocked him in 45 mins, all offline. Pretty simple for an 88 overall player honestly.
But yes, should be more ways to unlock players I agree with you.

Your obviously better than I am then because I spent at least that long (probably longer) and I think I have 3 of the multi game moments still to do.

See but thats the thing, 45 for you could be 4 hours for someone else because so much of this crap is completely based on RNG, especially when its guys with almost no power. Theres things I finish in 20 minutes here where other people are working on them for days and in most cases, it has very little to do with skill. Its just total nonsense.

It's gotten to the point with me that if I don't do amazing in the first game I just restart the multi-game Moment. Fixes most of the frustrating that goes with it.
The least they could do is load up the entire 3+ games so I don't have to back out to the menu after each one.

The multiple game moments aren't usually difficult, they're just tedious and annoying. I get pretty excited when I beat a multi gamer in the first game though.

I think you guys might like these, this is what I went through this afternoon in the Hernandez moments.
The first one is during the 2 hit moment. I was robbed by CPU defense not once, but twice:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KwEQUFpGqI
This second one shows why Moments are the worst thing ever. Hit a no doubt double, but the CPU runner decides that he didn't want to run to third base. Thankfully, I already had the extra base hit for that mission, otherwise I would have been furious:

I had the bases loaded and hit a ball over the right fielders head that one hopped off the wall. Kolten Wong tagged up at second and then only advanced one base, meaning the runner behind him stopped at 2nd and I was robbed of an extra base hit.

Found these surprisingly easy tbh, after expecting them to be a bit of a nightmare to hit all those XBH with such a singles hitter.
Pretty dull though, just repeating the exact same thing for every moment. "Get X hits and Y XBH's in Z games" repeated 6 times
Ok how the Hell is anyone doing these? Ignoring the Good/Okays on good placement, I just hit a Perfect/Perfect liner 90 mph off the bat on a 98 mph fastball while power swinging.
That went about 25 feet beyond the infield and caught easily by the LF.
Just hit another power swinging Perfect/Perfect that was an easy out. Finished 1 XBH shy of finishing the first game.
    no thanks sds

It was the hardest group of moments in the game for me so far. Took me awhile. They know exactly what they are doing and 100% troll the **** out of their own community for laughs.

I use directional and for the most part found that I had the most success not using any influence on the swings. Tons of bloops for singles and just enough gap shots to get XBH/TB when needed. I hit a surprising amount of homers, too. Except for San Diego I beat most of these on just a couple attempts.
Also, every time you think a ball might be deep enough to go for second when you need XBH or TB. The success rate isn’t that high but it came up huge for me a couple times.
This has to be one of the softest hitting moments I think I have ever played. Feels like whiffle ball. Plus the walks and hit by pitches just add insult to injury. I also wont bring up the CPU outfield flying through the air catching liners and robbing homeruns like catching routine fly balls. I wish my outfield could do those things.

This x1000 haha nothing worse then a ciritcal at bat and you get hit by a pitch or hit a screaming liner and the CPU flies further than Michael Jorden.

This is me. 3 open moments with Keith. So much dash boarding, rage quits, etc. I don’t even like, need, or at this point want the card anymore. I have the total base moment to do, one game left where I need 3 hits on one moment, and I had a good first game on the 5 game moment. On the other hand, I did all of Dawson in less time than the vs nationals on all star mission.
PS I truly believe they are throwing Keith a rolled up sock.
No desire for this card, just want it for the program stars to get Chipper.
This man is swinging a wet noodle for sure. Just attempted the first moment a couple times and went 3 for 4 in all 3 games but they were all singles and the one ball we did manage to get in the gap the runner on first stopped at second.....
I feel like I'm hitting with a pitcher. I've gotten one hr with hernandez. Plus he's slow, this 12 bases mission in veteran is ridiculous. Anything in the GPA leads to a diving catch

Finally beat both hernandez missions. Not a single homerun was hit....got to 300p in 3rd inning with the win, getting chipper.

Yeah I just go oppo with Keith, don't even really try to sit and pull stuff.

It's damn near impossible to pull the ball with him it seems. Every hit I get with him drops right in front of the left fielder.
I did finally get an extra base hit with him........in a moment that doesn't require one.
Edit: I take that back he can pull the ball with a power swing at least. Works quite nice.
The first couple of these I breezed through and thought it was going to go quickly. On the second one (Astros), he was 5/5 in the first game with a couple of XBH. He had a 6th AB with a chance to get it done in the first game. Ripped a line drive that the first baseman dove and caught. He then got the 6th hit in the first AB in the 2nd game.
But since then, it's more of a grind. He hits liners everywhere, but they often get caught.
I think I'll give the Coxatron method a try...SDS sucks!!! What are they thinking?!?! These Moments are unplayable!!!
EDIT: The Coxatron method failed me just like my own methods do. Absolutely, no difference...except I can blame it on him. :)
Can this man even get the ball to the warning track?! Geeeeezzzz. Tally 12 bases is killing me. They should have made this moment 1 game longer since the only thing this guy is hitting is bloopers.
Seriously who would even want this guy in his lineup? I’m just here for 20 inning points.
Furthermore I hope the loading in and out of these multiple game moments is a thing of the past when the PS5 is among us. What a drag are these things.

The ritual typically only works if you give excruciating detail on exactly how the failed run went and scream at the clouds while furiously typing something people wont even read.
Then, and only then, will the RNG Elders look down on you with pity and allow your pain and suffering to end.

So another day, another hour trying this f*cking moment. 1st game I hit my first homerun ever with him so I’m like okay maybe, just maybe, we are gonna nail it this time. Think again, game 2 and three wet noodle after wet noodle after perfect/perfect line out...
I'm with ya. Tried this one again this morning. Got 4 singles (of course) in the first game. I thought maybe I can get it done with a bunch of singles and an occasional double. No dice. "Defeated"
Another day, another freaking Keith Hernandez try.
I wish this guy never became MVP so he would never appear in these frustrating moments.
I think I even made more than 20 points just by trying this ridiculous moment.

We're playing the same game! I just gave him a couple more tries, working on the 11 hits in 5 games Moment. Not even close on the first try...quit...reload. Thought I had it for sure on the second try. Went into the last game needing one f'n single. 0-4. Choke. "Defeated" Gonna give it one more try...
EDIT: Quit after an o-fer in the 1st game. Gonna move on before I go down a controller. We'll meet again, Keith.
    Try Analog Hitting with Keith..
Analog Hitting helped me breeze through Keith because I switched to it during the Jackie moments for home runs etc.
Even did most of Pudges with Analog.
Might not be your batting style, but for moments ya gotta do what ya gotta do. lol

lol no problem, hope it helps.
With these wet noodle guys I was getting so frustrated at my PCI placement etc. Felt like i was my own worst enemy in these moments after a while so i just switched it up. Analog places the PCI for you and on Rookie/Veteran and even All Star all you have to do is swing at a good pitch.
I felt the same about analog last year. It really feels like the optimal input on All-Star and lower because it takes the frustration level out. Nothing makes me want to spike a controller more than squaring up balls in Moments and watching them go right at people. That overwhelming sense of getting ****ed is what makes me not enjoy this stuff.
But if I use analog, then it doesn't bother me nearly as much because I'm already submitting to the RNG elders by using it. It's weird, sure, but it made the game more fun using it last year.
If I'm really going to torture myself with these moments then I might have to use it again. I've been enjoying hitting with zone this year because I've gotten enough reps where I'm much better with it now. But sheesh. I can only square up so many balls needing 1 more hit before I just give in to the simulation and press up on the thumbstick.

That's how I feel about Zone, have pitches squared up, and end up somehow moving the PCI a hair and pop up, chop out, so frustrating. Add to that I'm not very good so that makes it even worse LOL.
Playing on Analog hitting makes me see pitches better, take better swings, etc.
I'm playing a Mets franchise on Legend Hitting with Analog and still hitting the ball really well.
Ok this is seriously getting ridiculous. This guy just can’t hit doubles. OR he hits liners straight at the center or right fielder OR the outfielders make the mos insane diving catches you’ve ever seen!
I just can’t see his Keiths ugly schmucks face ever again. Congrats to the SDS employe who came up this guy’s moments, I’ve never been so frustrated with a game in my life. Ever. Hope you sleep well.
Ok I said I was done but I couldn’t let his mustache rest. Another day another hour hitting everything at the fielders in where 80% of the balls hit, the fielders don’t even have to move. If the announcers say “a ball hit in the gap” I know for 90% sure it’s going to be an insane outfield dive by the CPU. If I would’ve made a highlight reel of all the plays the CPU have made during this moment it would be better than a defensive highlight reel of the whole 2019 MLB season.
By now I’ve put 10 hours in this moment (get 11 hits, 3 xbh in 5 games) and I think I’m gonna start a youtube channel just to show the absurdity of this saga.

I wish it empored this freaking dude. Another 2 hours in and I keep hitting the ball on the screws but they all die before it even reaches the warning track or get hit straight at the outfielders.
And EVERY game has at least 2 highlight reel dives by the CPU.
Haha all jokes aside that's the biggest thing with these to me: you spend all this time for a card that already isn't really that great.
By the time people get done with these everyone will hate the player and never use the card out of spite anyway.
This game is a toxic relationship and a half.

Yeah it’s not even about the player, it’s just that I want to finish this damned moment. The 20 program points are nice but this whole thing has become a matter of principle. I’ve come to a point that I can’t imagine anyone finished this or that SDS is just playing with me.
I will be coming back to this topic everyday untill I finish it so sorry in advance but this run has reached epic retry proportions that I’ll give it a few more days before I throw my ps4 out of the window.

Just to be clear, SDS didn't just single you out, LAH. For some reason, they're picking on me too. What did we do to deserve this? I try this Moment a couple times per day, then quit for a while before I get too wound up. We'll get it some day...won't we?

Hey Fiddy - I decided to try Analog for the first time, based on your suggestion. I just went to practice batting mode and I don't understand it. I set it on Pure Analog Flick. So all I do is flick the right analog stick up? All that matters is the timing of the swing? Does it matter if I flick a little left or right? I read you can press the buttons before the swing to get a contact, normal, power swing?
Sometimes the PCI is no where near the ball, sometimes above, below, to one side. Is all that dependent strictly on swing timing? I looked for a analog guide, but couldn't find anything that answers these questions.

Yeah Pure Analog is all about timing and yes beforehand you can choose by pressing square for power or circle for contact.
I’ve tried it as well but my PCI placement is often better than when the CPU does is for you.
Good luck to you as well brother!
I think vision attribute plays into it as well. You'll get good timing swings where you completely miss. It definitely has more RNG by nature since you're only controlling the timing.
Yeah, it seems like there is more to it than just swing timing. I practiced with it for a while, then tried Keith again using Analog. I think it's like any other method, it takes some getting used to. I discovered the PCI does move left and right based on the direction you push the analog stick. Maybe I'm over-thinking it, but I have a hard time finding a thumb and hand position to consistently push the stick straight up or in the direction the pitch is going. Also, against a guy like Kyle Hendricks that throws that sinker down in the zone consistently, how do you get that elevated? I think I hit three straight ground balls directly back to him. With Zone, at least I can locate the PCI all the way down in the zone. Of course, if he throws it up in the zone, I'm screwed.

That's why it really ends up being inconsistent because you're relying on the batter actually getting to those. You'll absolutely demolish anything middle and up with good timing. I mean you'll nuke everything. But bottom of the zone is hard to get squared up.
    This f*cking clown
This moment in a nutshell everytime:
    Swing timing: good
    Contact result: okay
    Swing timing: good
    Contact result: weak
    Swing timing: perfect

I just started power swinging with him which really helped getting the ball in to the gap or pulling it down the line into the corner. If I used normal swing it went to left center or right at the left fielder everytime. I'd prefer to go that way but it was impossible to get the ball through the gap as the left fielder would cut it off more often than not.
I didn't do many of the moments, instead opting to get hits online with him and some other stuff, but when I got close to wrapping him up online I went into such an insane cold streak with him before just deciding to go the opposite way with everything, which finally got me there.
I tried Keith again twice last night. The first time, I had enough hits and came up one XBH short. The next time, came up one hit short. I realized doing the online stuff will be quicker. I loaded up a mostly Cardinal squad, with some extra 1B players, and went over to RS. I suck online, but after 1 game I have 6/10 Cardinal hits. I wish I’d done this a month ago!
EDIT: Yep, 2 RS games and 10 Cardinal hits. I don’t have to torture myself with that Moment anymore! What’s ironic is I played a guy with Keith in his lineup. He had 4 bloop hits, just over the infield! I misplayed one into a triple. That’s his only way to get an XBH. So, he still got me by contributing to my RS loss! Mustachioed Bastard!

I haven’t bothered with him yet as I will never use him, but my 9 year old finally beat all the moments. Said he had to go the the power swing as well to finally get the XBH requirements.
On another note, the only TA Stage 1 I still need is the hit two homers with Vlad. Any tips there, that one has been very frustrating for me and i want that 15k XP

Switch to directional and hold up and mindlessly wait for something middle up and power swing. Also pray.

Haha people conquering Keith is my favorite subplot of the DD year so far.

This Moment has now ruined my relationship with Keith. As a long-time Cardinal fan, I loved Keith Hernandez. After this Moment, he's now dead to me.

This mission is beyond frustrating, from gold glove defense, pitchers clogging up the base paths the one time you hit it in the gap you finally get, bean balls and walks taking away at bats. I’ve lost this mission every way possible. I cuse out Keith, and I hate Keith now and hey he didn’t make this frustrating game! I’m only trying to get Chipper 🤦*♂️ You gave a tip and you don’t even know you did it. I’m blowing up the internet looking for a tip. I just need to let a kid play 🤣😂😂🤣 I need a 9 year old
