MLB The Show 18 Features Batting Stance Creator, Rain Delays, Player and Team Specific Celebrations and More
The first GameStop MLB Monday for the new season is here, showing off the new batting stance creator in MLB The Show 18. The video also shows off fog, improved rain and yes…rain delays.
Team specific celebrations, home run celebrations with players reacting accordingly to each situation and more are shown in the video. Make sure you check it out and post your thoughts!
In baseball, the little things matter most and in @MLBTheShow 18, it’s no different. Swing for the fences on this #MLBMonday with custom batting stances and dancing pitchers! https://t.co/eANhoNbYER pic.twitter.com/ZEDQCseeHy

That batting stance creator is just nuts.
Looks like you can adjust a real stance as well. They used Buster Posey as an example. If he changed his stance mid season and there's nothing close to it in the game already you can create it. Pretty sweet addition.

They said postponed however, based on the context shown, I think they met delays. I don't think we are getting rainouts yet.

Yeah, you could be right about that, now that I think about it. I would think they would have mentioned doubleheaders here if they were a possibility.
Still....rain delays that matter strategically, at the bare minimum. More than a few guys have been asking for those. :y220b:
Also, was it just me or did the Nats red look really bright??? Like the actual red color they wear.
Side note: was that Dee Gordon on the Angels at the end of the video? Because that wasn't Ian Kinsler or Andrelton Simmons tagging the runner out, lol.

They improved the animations. Looks more realistic and they fixed arm slots as well.
The way I have seen SDS talk about rain delays in the past did not ever give me the feeling that they were in any rush to add rain delays so this is a real big surprise to me. I guess this proofs that any feature is possible with time.
It's not something I ever really needed but I am very happy for you guys that really wanted this feature :) :waytogo:
Now if they can add realtime weather then were talking! :)
The new batting editor, rain delays that include strategy, and that kick-*** fog are amazing. The New animations and adding in emotions has me very excited.
Just please have something newer in franchise mode...

Can't wait to see this preview in higher quality. And hopefully they'll play a fog game during the next developers' stream. :y12:

And the batting stance creator looks nice too!
I wasn't planning on purchasing this year for monetary reasons but starting to change my mind...
So hoping they fixed the motions so they look like the Thor motion, where the motion looks like actually throwing a baseball.
Can't wait to see more of these areas of gameplay during the dev streams.

That would be pretty cool aswell, the Dynamic crowd attendance, Not all fans will stay back for the delay
From the trailer it looks like it's been fixed.

I thought that at first too, but that's gotta be Eric Young Jr. The real question is why is he playing the infield?
Yep, saw that too.
Hoping they went thru all the pitching motions... But I bet that's a lot of work.
Now hoping we get pitching motion creator next year!! Haha
Also, hope they aren't programmed to trigger at "x" inning every time.
I’ve been asking for Batting Stance Creator forever! It allows for so much fun, creativity, realism.
My biggest pet peeve was when a player changed their stance, so you change it in The Show and you lost their HR Swing. I’m hoping that isn’t the case and you keep the HR Swing.
This also allows us to tweak an incorrect stance. I know a couple of stances that looked funky in past years games and had to live with them just to keep the HR Swing, again I sure hope they maintain it.
Next step is 2 Stances for Switch Hitters, Generic Stance Filter (find me Stance with open hips and high tight hands), and HR Swings no matter the stance. Give me Donaldson’s HR Swing with Cespedes’ Stance.
These player emotions depending on the situation adds a ton of realism and excitement. Being able to recognize you hit a clutch HR and have a more lively/excited reaction rather than plain old HR Swing should be awesome.
EDIT: Confirmed in Gamespot Video, if you change ANY Batting Stance with Animations (HR Swing) you will KEEP those animations! That’s a game changer

Because they still have 2B as one of his secondary positions in the game even though he hasn't played 2B in a few years. He did play 1 game at 2B in 2016 in the minors. That is probably why he's at 2B in the trailer. Still has 2B as one of his secondary positions.
I think we have this conversation every year. haha
But I think like always we will find out during the offline franchise stream if anything was added or taken out.
It's definitely Dee Gordon though. Gordon and #9 on the jersey and looks like him too. Weird that they put him on the Angels and left him there for the trailer.
The footage could have been taken in franchise mode. Could have been traded to the Angels or picked up on a waiver claim. Or fantasy draft.
The submenus don't show up until they are hovered over. Doubt we'll find out anything more unless there's a slip-up or until Franchise blog/twitch.
Definitely Dee Gordon, they also had a clip of Altuve hitting on the red sox, so probably just a fantasy draft or something.
If I'm not mistaken every trailer you see the builds are 2-4 weeks old from when the trailer drops.
including the gameplay footage from ign and GS?
Not sure about those, but the builds are old from what I remember in previous years. Plus those builds are works in progress and you'll see issues.
Yeah i'm still not huge on the pitching deliveries, the ones in this video didn't look too good to me, especially Strasburg's :34:
But at least with the batting stance creator (HUGE addition), and the ability to edit player stances, we should be able to get all stances accurate.
If rainouts were possible I'm sure it would have been mentioned in the video. I would love double headers though.
Swing creator, meh, not overly bothered by as there were already hundreds of them anyway, but I can see why people would be into that.
Bullpen dancing, if that took more than 10 minutes then that's a complete waste of time.
What other baseball games in video game history have had in-progress rain delays? I know someone mentioned 2k but I honestly don't remember them ever having them. I know MVP had postponements, but only from the front-end (plus you could only control 1 team IIRC so re-scheduling for doubleheaders would have been a lot easier). It didn't have in-progress delays.
I have to hit the wayback machine for the only one I can remember for sure that actually interrupted a game - Acclaim's All-Star baseball series, in the Nintendo 64 era. I WANT to say 3DO's High Heat might have done it too, but my memory's a little foggy there.
It's pretty rarified air, though.
Same thing with rain delays. They are not something that were at the top of my list, but I am intrigued by the fact that they are in the game. This announcement leaves me with questions about it that I'm hopeful will be answered in the stream on Thursday.
As for the video as a whole, I liked it. The game looks amazing. The fog in Oakland was a thing of beauty, if that can be said about fog. :)
Also welcomed seeing the celebrations and emotions by the players. Much needed. Anything to bring more life/atmosphere to the game is welcomed by me at least. :)
That he is still in the Pirates uni? It's just a placeholder, all that gets adjusted towards the end.
Impetuous65,
I understand your point and share a similar perspective. But I think going forward from MLB 18 the next iterations will begin to focus on the fundamentals of baseball! 2019,2020 etc. It's tough because the road seems so long. I have been hanging in there since MLB 14 waiting each iteration. Not sure how much longer but I do feel it's on the horizon!
As an example less dancing in the bullpen and more AI logic of a CPU player getting caught in a run down and knowing how to get out of it! It's got to be on the way!
I just thought it was funny that they just haphazardly threw a "GIANTS" on top of it. I know it'll get fixed, just got a chuckle out of it.
Also, was it just me or did the Nats red look really bright??? Like the actual red color they wear.
Nah. Still looked really dull to me. Especially the Angels and BoSox.
see picture below.
Doesn’t look like it to me haha.
Stoked about the new celebrations. Will add that much more to the atmosphere and realism. Can't wait to get my hands on this game.
Well, you got me there. Haha
Can't wait to see more of these areas of gameplay during the dev streams.
The arm slot changes look great. I do think they need to review the leg whips as it seems a bit lack luster.
Sounds like a Debbie downer, just a quick thought from the trailer.
This batting stance creator...gosh, I may be in heaven not having to search or settle on a stance that isn't perfect.
Plus, using historical rosters will be just amazing.
Let's not throw shade about what we don't know yet...still a lot to reveal about the game.
Classic teams would be a game changer for me.
see picture below.
When it showed the Strasburg clip I thought the red really stood out... May just have been myself tho.
Here you go :)
Still could be brighter definitely
Still could be brighter definitely
That looks like the Phillies in game lol.
Yesssss! This is huge.
I think we are just going to see rain delays, no rain outs. I'm totally fine with that.
Ahh. I need to decide if my walk up song is gonna be blind melons no rain or Luke Bryans rain is a good thing

They're starting to throw that legend tag around too loosely.
It went out the window when they added Mario Mendoza.
Still no Andres Galarraga....
Thanks man!
Looks better, but still needs to be brighter.
I don't remember how retractable roofs work with this game during a franchise, but considering we saw rain trickling at an open Minute Maid Park, is it possible we will see a rain delay in that stadium, or will we at least be able to close the roof? Haha.

Roofs are supposed to be closed based on weather during franchise. Interesting they would have shown raining at a retractable roof stadium. I didn’t even know it would allow you to choose rain at a stadium where the roof could be closed.
I agree I'm fine with the delays, as this could be a starting point. But I am hopeful maybe once we hear more we'll get both. But if I can't have rainouts I'll take delays as a huge step in the right direction.
Ehh...I think they just got the rights to these players to use in DD, so the stance they've had as a "generic" placeholder can be updated too now.
Yes, it would be even better to have rainouts
And doubleheaders the next day

He said if your game gets postponed, they would refer to that as a delay? I know it's semantics but generally if a game gets postponed its played another day.

I thought the same thing. Sounds like it will only be “delays”, which I’m cool with. Maybe next year we will see “rain outs” and the postponements that come from that.
Figure it has to be the way they have implemented it this year because the rescheduling from actual postponements would be tough to pull off, as the devs have mentioned in years past.

I’m wondering if the menu colors change based on your favorite team. As you can see here, the favorite team is set to the Giants based on the bottom right corner, so I’m thinking that the reason the bars are orange and the selected area is black is because of team colors. Also the player pictures might be unique to team choice, they have Cutch with ‘Giants’ plastered over his face on the main menu area. A minor thing, but it would be cool. They do that in Madden and NHL.
Most likely it is. EA has been doing that for a while with their games.
It looks to be the case. I seem to remember one of the past versions of the show did something like this before.
You can also see that the background image is of AT&T Park, so that will probably change based on team as well.

It was many moons ago and I don't even remember the system but High Heat had a great rain delay system and it was in the moment.
I don't however recall if it had something regarding having to make a decision on the pitcher.
I haven't read through this all or even seen the video myself yet but I don't know if I like having to make a decision on the pitcher right away. The one screen I saw seems to indicate that you are given a possible window and are asked to decide to leave your pitcher in or move on. (PLEASE correct me if I"m wrong on that).
I would like to see an option of "both" for a lack of a better term. Have a plan B loosen up and be ready to go but not completely shut down the current pitcher right away.
You can see Yankee Stadium in the background of the IGN video and their logo in the bottom corner of the screen. Pretty safe to say it changes based on favorite team. Also Houston and Minute Maid in the background of the Instagram posts of Carlos Correa that smiley3 posted, https://forums.operationsports.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2049227754&postcount=20

Seems like that is what it will be.
It would be cool if they threw in a rain shortened game once in a while.
I think the feature would be quite pointless if it doesn't have postponed games or double features.. all we would have is a 30 second cut scene and a different time of day.. I guess though from the picture we seen that it would bring strategy with your pitcher if he should be replaced
I am sure someone posted this already>
so a pen and paper writing values rather then taking 20 min videos of my arms aching lol
Yea, I think they just used the wrong word.
I love that they are adding this but the more I think about it the more I wish they held this off until they could do rainouts and double headers. The scheduling could be as simple as coding it to where it never rains out the last day of a series and it could be just as simple as a dialog box at the schedule screen like MVP Baseball used to do it.
I don't however recall if it had something regarding having to make a decision on the pitcher.

Thanks, I just couldn't remember on HH for sure. Guess I should probably look through the ol' tune file again - I'd probably find something about rain delay frequency in there ( god knows every other option imaginable was in that file :D)

Honest question, are stances copyrighted? If so wouldn't "batting stance guy" have had legal issues by now?
Rain "delays" seem to be a step in the right direction, but let's see if it actually affects anything or if it's a nothing burger. If it's just a pop up that you get from time to time in certain weather, then my official response would be "meh." If it impacts stamina or effectiveness of the pitcher, or makes the current pitcher more injury-prone were he to power through the delay, then that's good. Also, whatever team Jason Heyward is on needs to get a global +10 boost coming out of a rain delay. That's his quirk. That and "soft contact expert."
"Better" celebrations in certain situations is, to me, the best thing unveiled here. The solo homer in a 9-3 loss should not come across the same as a go ahead bomb in the 8th inning. Looking forward to seeing more variety in different situations. Would also be cool to see a guy pimp one and then get absolutely drilled in his next AB. That's baseball.

Man looking at the tune file does bring back memories..
I see "rain percentage" as the only rain specific tune..
I know rain delays started in HH 2002 I believe.
Big difference between the two and adds even more strategy.
Wonder how the game "warns" you of a potential delay. If I know it may rain in the 2nd inning, I'd be hesitant to start my ace with the possibility of wasting him.
Create A Stance is simply awesome.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great burn as well.
I just hope there is more improvements and additions to Franchise mode, as while I love both of these new additions, I have to say, there are IMO anyway, more important things to be added, and/or improved upon. However this is a good start to finding out whats new this yr.

Unless they changed the weather to completely random you will still be able to choose the weather before the game.
I wonder if they will include a "light rain" option. If you select this option the chance of a rain delay will be less likely.
Might be possible that they try to include realtime weather based on the addition of the fog and "the weather clearing up".

EA just don’t get it.
I like that retro mode is back. I know a lot of people didn't care for it, but for somebody who grew up playing baseball games in the late 80s and early 90s it was a fun throwback. It was even more fun with friends (much better than playing the CPU). I hope retro Mode is playable online, something I really wanted last year.

I'm hoping it will be online as well. Would enjoy playing a league with friends online.
Yes, online Retro Mode would be a welcomed feature. Maybe even choices for fewer innings, just to get something in and out.
But really, as long as they keep the fielding camera for non RP mode that's all I really need. It's for sure my default until/unless they are ever able to pony up a decent broadcast fielding camera. I do hope they find a way to pan up better into the stands for no-doubter home runs with that camera, though.
Also hoping and I'm sure these are older builds but noticed they are still using two of the same Nike brand cleats from last year. I know they added the new Trouts based on one of last week's videos but haven't seen any new ones. The two they are showing/still using are probably my least favorite ones. Really hope they get the new Huaraches in.

I hope they left the Griffey cleats in from last year. Those are the only ones that you can make look like the Jordans that some players wear.

Weather was random in franchise in MLB 17.
If you chose to not change it from what the game selected, yeah, sure it was. But it was always selectable in the pregame menu (the same one you could choose the presentation package or quick counts from).
It's labeled "Cloud Cover" and not Weather, but it includes options for Clear, Partly Cloudy, Overcast, and Rain.

Exactly - it was random unless you tinkered with it. The poster above indicated it wasn't.

Not remarkable but a very welcome addition nonetheless. That combined with what looks like improved rain/fog at the very least have me curious to learn how it'll all be implemented.
Comments like this just baffle me. It may "seem" like it, but do you have any clue as to what goes into the process to implement it? Do you know what other things it can or will effect in coding? These would be questions that I would probably want to know the answer to before I pretend that its something easy to accomplish.
Uhh, considering that the MVP Baseball series used to do this in the early-mid 2000's, I don't think it would have been that difficult to implement today.
However I just got to ask why is rain delays so important to you guys? Because for me rain delays just does not excite me at all. I am way more excited for the fact that that apparently rain and fog has been improved and will look more realistic. Same thing for the create batting Stance feature I am very happy that is was added for the guys that like creating new rosters. But it's another feature that I personally will not use.
I just hope SDS will have a lot more cool things to unveil later today in the Twitch stream as far as the little things go because as of now nothing I have heard so far is getting me super exited.
However I guess the reason I am not super excited just yet is because I am definitely more of a Presentation, Graphics, Commentary kind of guy and we will not hear to much about whats new in that area until next week. I'm the kind of guy that would get super excited if SDS told us that they fixed all the number placements on the jerseys or that they added a pre game and post game show with Heidi Watney or Lauren Shehadi. That's what gets my juices flowing :) lol
I never said "everything is easy to implement." I said, considering MVP Baseball did this 13+ years ago, rain delays should have been easy to implement. Thanks for twisting my words though. Appreciate it.
Who is twisting words?
You are saying this should've been easy to implement and saying its "laughable" that things aren't in the game, but then use words such as "seems" "should'be been" which indicates that you really have no clear idea as to how things get designed and coded into video games.
A ton more variables than that, but I'm not a programmer so I don't know exactly.......but I'm not pretending to either.

When did I ever say that I have any idea how to get things coded into video games? I simply noted that this feature has already been designed and coded into a video game 13+ years ago.
I never said you did, and that was my point.
How can someone who has no knowledge of how video games are created/designed/coded, make statements that something should be easy to put into a video game?

Idk. Maybe I'll reach out to a programmer for the MVP Baseball series who implemented the very same feature into a baseball video game over 13 years ago.
Do just that....we'll wait.

I too am really looking forward to the improved rain/fog but rain delays have a significant impact on how you manage a baseball game. Implementing something like that into a game that aims for sim realism is a big deal.

I agree, Rain is amazing, great feature great ability to add some new strategy to franchise. Hope that everytime it rains, doesn't mean there is going to be a rain delay. But I have a feeling, anytime it rains there will be a rian delay so it will be a bit predictable.
lets see what they say in the stream!
Well it seems that all they added was a cut scene and basically replaced the injury dialog box with a warm up pitcher box. Very minimal effort to do this.
To be honest, I think the current implementation of the rain delay is a side-effect of Dynamic weather/rain (which is almost certainly not a minor effort thing to code). There wasn't really any reason to have it before when the weather wouldn't change in mid-game, but now that it does, there is a reason to have rain delays.
I don't really think it should be seen as its own feature, rather as a part of the whole.
Yep all they had to do was go into code and type:
RAIN DELAY
and it was immediately implemented into the game. :waytogo:
I don't really think it should be seen as its own feature, rather as a part of the whole.
This is assuming that the weather will change mid game as you play. The way they showed it is basically they just turn the rain off after the cut scene.
I am interested to see if at times the rain comes back later after the game resumes or if the sun comes out.

I'm looking forward to playing the Nationals and having them wear the Expos' uniform
I would love the ability to be able to change default team colors to throwback colors. That way you could use throwbacks as default uniforms without having color clashes.
I am interested to see if at times the rain comes back later after the game resumes or if the sun comes out.
That's a fair take based on what we know right now. Ramone did say on-stream that they worked on making the rain more dynamic and, more specifically, that it can stop on its own. Whether it stops through the normal flow of a game (i.e. truly dynamic), or if it's a forced stop because of the rain delay scene wasn't expanded upon.
Yeah i think they missed a few opportunities this stream.
They could have shown this, or at least explained it, so we truly know how dynamic the rain is.
They could have played a game in the fog to show how the new fog looks.
They didn't spend any time talking about the new pitcher mechanics they talked about in the gamestop video.
I believe some throwbacks, but not all, do have this feature. For example if you pick the 1993 Marlins throwbacks the default team colors change from black and orange to black and teal.
Are you talking about the equipment/accessory colors? I was referring to the the basic team branding colors like the ones used on the scoreboards and presentations.
Ohh I get what u mean. Logo changes would be great too.
A rebrand/logo editor/uniform editor would be awesome.
This feature was in a game back on PC way back in 94-98 in a baseball series by Sierra. It was called Baseball Pro and it was great series. I can't understand how a feature this simple to have to have had it in a game nearly 20 years ago has taken this long to implement into this series.
I will be working on my list for this year that has saved and crossing off this feature as part of it. Well, part of it... we still don't have doubleheaders yet.
This game is far from perfect from a presentation point of view IMO, However, it is coming along slowly but coming along.Maybe someday our opening day coverage in this game will be on par with our tv along win our all-star game coverage and postseason coverage. Pregame stuff is more of what I am talking about.
My reasoning is that I'm afraid this could potentially create a CPU roster management nightmare. For example, if a rain delay occurs say in the 2nd inning and the CPU decides to not put his starter back out there and either goes to the pen or worse, another starter, then there is potential issues there for games going forward.
If the CPU goes to the bullpen then there is a chance that the CPU could burn through its bullpen, tiring out arms/players and then having to rely on these relievers the rest of the series.
If the CPU goes with another starter, then that could potentially throw the rotation out of whack with rested arms in between starts.
Unless they have added this year (and maybe its in '17 as I didn't play franchise in '17) that the CPU will call up a pitcher or two to help with a tired staff, then the potential issues I stated worry me to the point that I'd just rather turn rain delays off.

I have no idea about being able to turn it off. In the stream where they answered questions in the chat they said we would get rain without delays as well.
yeah I remember hearing that. I am really hoping we have the option to turn off rain delays.
One thing I would like to see is rain cause the field to become "sloppy".
If the CPU isn't then I truly hope we have the option to turn it off.
I don't want another feature that is user only similar to the replay challenges.
Turn stadium graphics off?
Oh no, sorry for the confusion. I meant that R2 Guess Pitch Button who’s a bit annoying.
Yeah same goes for pitch selection screen of the CPU.

Not terribly worried about this because the AI's bullpen management is already quite wonky. They have no problems making a 1-inning guy go 3 innings and the stamina doesn't really seem to correlate with the pitcher's effectiveness anyhow. The AI decision of when to pull starters is just so so and with starters already getting yanked early at times, I doubt the occasional rain delay (maybe 5 per season? maybe just a couple of those being in the very early innings? just speculating, but rainy games seem to be far less common than sunny/overcast games in my experience) will destroy a computer team's pitching staff.

Even if it works to perfection, I still hope there's the option to choose.

I'm sure I'm not understanding (I'm old lol) but you can turn these off...
Again I might be misunderstanding
