After handing the ball off on a read-option play, Mendoza was struck by Miami safety Jakobe Thomas. The hit was so intense that it left Mendoza on the turf with a visibly split and bloody lip. Despite the brutality of the contact, the officiating crew did not throw a penalty flag. This silence from the referees caused an uproar both in the stadium and across social media.

The Indiana sidelines were furious, with coaches and players demanding an explanation for the lack of a call. While Mendoza eventually stayed in the game to lead his team to a historic 27-21 victory, the hit set a hostile tone for the rest of the night.

Controversy Ignites Over Missed Targeting Call On Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza

The primary source of the controversy was the failure to review the play for targeting. According to college football rules, targeting occurs when a player leads with the crown of their helmet or makes forcible contact with the head or neck area of a defenseless player.

Many fans argued that the hit met every criterion for an ejection. Critics pointed out that Thomas seemed to launch himself, leaving his feet to deliver the blow to Mendoza’s face. The fact that the play was not even stopped for a booth review added to the frustration, as targeting is a foul designed specifically for player safety.

Defenders of the non-call argued that because Mendoza was carrying out a fake handoff, he was not technically a defenseless player. However, the sheer force and the location of the hit made that distinction irrelevant to most observers.

Fernando Mendoza Was Left Bloodied By Vicious Hit

For Fernando Mendoza, the hit was a literal welcome home to Miami, the city where he grew up but was never offered a scholarship. The safety, Jakobe Thomas, was reportedly part of a defensive strategy to hit Mendoza as often as possible to disrupt his rhythm.

The injury was a testament to Mendoza’s celebrated toughness. Despite the blood and the clear physical toll of the hit, he refused to leave the field for an extended period. He finished the game with 186 passing yards and a legendary 12-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that secured Indiana’s first-ever national title.

In post-game interviews, Mendoza downplayed the hit, stating he would die for his team and was willing to take any shot to win the championship. However, the image of his bloodied face remained a rallying cry for Indiana fans.
