Megan Rapinoe Rips Into ICE Agents for ‘Knocking People’s Phones Out of Their Hands’ After Fatal Shooting, Saying They Are Destroying Democracy

Former U.S. soccer star and activist Megan Rapinoe is speaking out about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement tactics after a deadly incident in Minneapolis. Rapinoe criticized what she sees as aggressive enforcement and said people should be able to document what is happening in public.

The comments came after the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident, by an ICE agent last week. Officials said the agent acted in self-defense during an enforcement operation. Rapinoe and others have questioned how the situation was handled and what it means for public trust.

Rapinoe’s remarks are part of a larger conversation happening across the country about immigration enforcement, protests, and the role of federal agencies in cities. Minneapolis has seen public anger and demonstrations since the shooting, and the debate has only grown louder.

Megan Rapinoe Condemns ICE Tactics as Minneapolis Outrage Grows

The tensions increased after the January 7 shooting in Minneapolis, when an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Good during an operation in the city. Federal officials described the shooting as self-defense and said Good moved her vehicle toward agents. However, other accounts and video evidence have been discussed publicly, and some local officials have questioned whether the federal description matches what was seen in footage. Investigations and reviews are still ongoing.

Rapinoe spoke about the situation on the podcast “A Touch More.” She said she believes immigration enforcement has gone too far in some cases, and she described what she feels has been happening during raids.

“I think this has been abnormal for the entire time the Trump administration has been conducting these raids and disappearing people and, you know, they’re knocking people’s phones out of their hands. It’s lawful to do that,” Rapinoe said. “They’re basically intimidating and threatening people not to protest and not to track what they’re doing, and that’s a lot of what was happening in Minneapolis. The community coming out, keeping their eyes on ICE, where are they, trying to stamp their people, impeding them in what feels (like) a very unlawful way of doing these immigration raids.

“It’s just really sad. Obviously, our heart goes out to Renee Good’s family and her community and all the people that love her and support her.”

The protests in Minneapolis have continued, and they have brought national attention to the city. Supporters of stronger enforcement say ICE is doing its job. Critics argue the tactics create fear and raise concerns about civil rights and accountability.

Political and Public Reaction to the Renee Good Shooting and Federal Enforcement Practices

The political reaction has been strong. Some Democratic lawmakers held hearings and criticized what they described as aggressive federal tactics. They also raised concerns about how quickly officials described what happened before a full investigation was completed.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey also pushed for more transparency and called for a clearer accounting of the facts. The incident has added to tensions between local leaders and federal agencies, especially when it comes to how enforcement operations are carried out in the city.

For Rapinoe, the moment connects to a broader point she has made for years about accountability and fairness in law enforcement. Her comments are likely to keep the conversation going, especially as people continue debating what immigration enforcement should look like and how communities should respond when something goes wrong.
