Since the scandal began, people have engaged in speculation about the relationship between Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini. One of the theories that they have come up with is that the former reporter’s eldest son, Michael, was named after the New England Patriots head coach. After photos of them together surfaced and shocked the sports world, many cannot help but notice the noticeable parallel between their names.
Michael “Mike” Vrabel seemed like the inspiration for Michael’s name. It did not help when TMZ recently revealed that Vrabel and Russini went on a private boat trip together in Tennessee in June 2021. At the time, the former The Athletic reporter was likely around six to seven months pregnant with her son, Michael, who was born in August that year. The ongoing speculation, combined with the resurfaced details of the trip, led some to link it to the origin of his name.
Now, TMZ Sports has debunked the claim with its most recent report about this matter. The name choice is reported to be rooted in family – not Vrabel. Russini is said to have selected “Michael” early in her pregnancy as a tribute to her older brother, Michael Russini, with the son’s middle name also reflecting another relative. Similar to her first child, her second son’s name is also tied to a family member, with reports noting it honors her grandfather.
Their Closeness Remains A Question
In March, Page Six published photos of the two spending time together in a resort in Arizona. They followed it with another set of photos showing them getting cozy in a New York Bar in 2020.
Since then, the true nature of their relationship has been put into question. New details about it keep emerging, with their alleged boat trip and a video footage of it being the most recent. The trip was supposed to be private, as the two had requested. The rental reportedly lasted around two to three hours. Vrabel and Russini have yet to speak on or verify this new information.
The last time Russini tackled or mentioned this issue was when she resigned and wrote a defiant resignation letter, which said that she was resigning because she didn’t want to let this issue define her career. Her side of the story will be revealed in time. Meanwhile, in April, Vrabel broke his silence, but not in the way many expected him to.
After admitting that he had talked about it with his family behind the scenes and that he would “become a better man,” the Patriots coach said he would take accountability for his “actions,” without naming what actions he was talking about. This was followed by his counseling session over the weekend of the 2026 NFL Draft.
