Madden NFL 26 Ditching Last-Gen Consoles, Adds Switch 2 Support

In a sign that we’re likely winding down support for last-gen consoles in the sports world, Madden 26 will be ditching the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, Madden 26 will also make its debut on the Nintendo Switch 2.

While College Football 26 will not be on the Switch 2, Madden 26 did list Nintendo’s newest console among its platforms. This means Madden 26 will be on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Switch 2. Both sides of the coin are relatively important signs of things to come. I would expect outside of maybe EA FC, this will probably be the last year for most major sports games on last-gen consoles. We’ll have to see what 2K decides to do with NBA 2K, and MLB The Show 25 did release on the Switch but not PS4/Xbox One, so we’ll need to wait until next year to see what happens there.

Some people are probably excited to see this news while others are bummed since they haven’t wanted to or have been unable to afford to make the jump to current-gen consoles. People already on PC and current-gen consoles have blamed support for last-gen consoles as a potential reason graphics in some of today’s sports games aren’t making more major leaps. Perhaps without needing to worry about porting to lower-end consoles anymore, more graphical fidelity will now make its way to current-gen games. Of course, the Switch 2 is not as powerful as the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PCs so we’ll now be curious to see what happens with that version.

In the past, the cycle EA Sports has gone through with Nintendo’s newest console is they support it strong out of the gate the first couple years, and then they really start to just do basic ports. We’ll need to see if the Switch 2 gets any unique features, but as of today, none were announced.
