The Magic City Night event for Atlanta fans is just two weeks away, but the backlash has already started. Magic City Night is labelled as a cultural event featuring local musicians and female performers during the half-time show. This time, Atlanta rapper T.I. will be performing mid-game alongside the female performer. Though some of the players are raising their voice claiming this event is odd for the sport.
Luke Kornet called this event a disrespect to women. He added that such events would also be odd for the women who play important roles in their various functions as sisters, daughters, and wives in our homes. Looks like Luke didn’t let go of the opportunity to break the silence on this situation, especially on a grand scale, like the NBA.
Luke Kornet, in a tweet, said, “The NBA should desire to protect and esteem women, many of whom work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world… we should promote an atmosphere that is protective and respectful of the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers, and partners that we know and love… Allowing this night to go forward without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society.”
Magic City Night Debuts As NBA’s Latest Cultural Event Amid Luke Kornet’s Public Criticism
Despite questions surrounding it, Atlanta Hawks owner Tony Ressler has affirmed Magic City Night as a permanent part of the team’s traditions, calling it a reflection of Atlanta’s longstanding nightlife culture. Since 1986, Magic City has been a staple of American nightlife. The Atlanta Hawks’ Magic City Night event next week serves as a tribute to this iconic Atlanta institution.
Hawk’s Principal Owner Jimmy Gertz even produced a series for the Magic City named “Magic City: An American Fantasy,” fueling the collaboration. Even though players like Luke do not seem to appreciate this event, the owners are adamant about reflecting on the city’s cultural elements. It is yet to be seen whether this would be a one-time event or whether it would eventually become an event that will be held every year to pay tribute to the nightlife of Atlanta.
