Following the Lakers’ 129-99 loss against the Cavaliers, LeBron James, who has recently been backed by Stephen over the Jeanie situation, has finally discussed his retirement plans. When this subject came up, the four-time champion straight up added that from his side, nothing related to the end of his NBA career has been brought up yet. Such an answer from the athlete makes it clear that he won’t be saying farewell to the court, at least not right now.
According to HITC, LeBron said, “I have not even thought to the point of a farewell tour, or whatever the case may be, because I haven’t had the conversation with myself and my family on when is it over. So, that’s not even I think that would come after that.” Here, he not only put a full stop to his retirement buzz but also made it clear that he won’t be taking a Jordan-like tour as a farewell.
In a tweet, an ESPN reporter said, “I’ve had people close to him tell me that he’s not necessarily interested in a retirement tour because that could bring some negativity…” prior to the Cleveland loss, stating that the talks about his “no retirement tour” were already happening before the game, which James confirmed at the end in front of the media.
To James, Having A Farewell Tour Doesn’t Sound Like A Good Idea
In the NBA community, LeBron’s response has reshaped fans’ expectations for his farewell. While some may have looked forward to him having a traditional exit like Jordan’s, with a final season that involved opposing teams and fans celebrating with ceremonies, gifts, and tributes at each game. LeBron doesn’t find this appealing because of the added pressure and injury risk it brings.
The reporter also added, “If, all of a sudden, his body doesn’t cooperate, he goes to a city, everybody buys tickets, and he is unable to play. He doesn’t want to have that disappointment following him.” Which states that a tour might negatively affect LeBron’s final image, because if his last season takes a different direction, the athlete might not be able to have the exit he deserves.
As a player who is already a proud dad on the court, the retirement news could be on the horizon. With him becoming a free agent this summer, the athlete could have a quiet exit, focusing on his legacy rather than tour ceremonies, as hinted at in his post-game comments.
