Lane Kiffin is familiar with public attention, but even he did not expect his departure to create this level of reaction. The new LSU head coach revealed that at least one fan tried to run him off the road after word spread that he was leaving Ole Miss.
The incident happened while he was driving with his 16-year-old son, and Kiffin said the anger from fans was loud, intense, and unsettling. It was no longer online noise.
Fans Tried To Run Him Off The Road And How The Tension Reached That Point
During his introductory press conference at LSU, Kiffin explained why he stayed composed even when Rebels fans booed as he left Oxford. He said the emotions around his departure had reached a point where frustration turned into personal attacks.
“It was very hard and it was really challenging,” Kiffin said at Tiger Stadium. “It’s the passion of the SEC. I understand that. I don’t get emotional with it…” He pointed to specific moments that showed how far the anger had gone. “… That airport scene, and Knox and I driving and people trying to run us off the road, man, and the things they said to us.”
Kiffin then described how quickly the tone changed once he arrived at his new home in Baton Rouge. “And then we got here, and we had been here for six minutes. ‘We love you, Coach. You’re the best ever.'” He said it reminded him how intense and unpredictable SEC passion can be. “That’s the SEC, I’ve been around long enough to know that, and it’s just the passion of the SEC.”
Kiffin added that he was not angry at the reactions from Rebels fans. He believed their frustration came from a place of genuine investment. “I’m not upset at those reactions by fans, by people. I think that people get really upset when you leave somewhere because they feel hurt because you’re doing a really good job. They ain’t going to the airport and driving from all over, okay, to say those things and yell those things and try to run you off the road if you were doing bad. So I just look at it as passionate people in the SEC, and then it means they really liked what we were doing there.”
He said he still hopes fans will remember the progress the program made while he was there. “Time heals a lot of things, and having gone through this in this conference before, I sure hope that happens,” he said.
His Daughter Jumped In And Turned The Backlash Into A Full-Blown Troll Moment
The lighter moment came from his daughter, Landry Kiffin, who used humor instead of frustration. Landry, a sophomore at Ole Miss, posted a playful message to fans who were upset that her father left Ole Miss for LSU.
She shared a short video with the caption, “Wish I could be as creative as angry football fans,” along with a heart hands emoji. She lifted her sunglasses, held up a peace sign, and added the hashtag, “it’s not that deep.”

Landry also liked several comments supporting her father’s decision to move on after six seasons. Her approach softened the online reaction and reminded people that the situation had become more dramatic than necessary.
Kiffin’s move may continue to stir reactions for a while, but the story now feels more balanced. His candid explanation, paired with Landry’s lighthearted response, has shifted the mood from outrage to understanding. The emotions around his exit show how deeply fans cared about his time at Ole Miss, and both father and daughter seem ready to move forward while hoping others will eventually do the same.
