Kyle Tucker, the top free agent available, has signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers on a four-year, $240 million contract. The deal makes him the newest player on the two-time defending champions. The agreement came just before spring training starts and has an average annual value of $60 million.
According to The Athletic, the most surprising parts of the contract are its short length and the multiple opt-out clauses included. Tucker, who turns 29 on Saturday, can re-enter free agency after just the second or third year. This means he could be back on the market as early as age 30.
This contract structure is completely different from what experts predicted this offseason. Earlier analysis suggested Tucker would get a 12-year, $460 million deal, which would have paid him around $38 million per year into his 40s. Almost nobody expected this high-value, short-term contract.

The Dodgers took a major gamble on Tucker’s prime years
When analysts looked at Tucker’s value, they used two recent deals as comparison points: Juan Soto’s $765 million contract and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s $500 million extension. The Guerrero deal helped set a baseline for what Tucker should earn. Based on his production compared to Guerrero’s, analysts decided that $35.7 million per year should be Tucker’s minimum value.
To figure out if Tucker could reach $40 million-plus like Soto and Shohei Ohtani, analysts noted that Tucker has been about 75 percent as valuable as Soto in recent years. Using that math, 75 percent of Soto’s $51 million average comes to just over $38 million per season. Spread that through Tucker’s age-40 season, matching Soto and Guerrero’s contract lengths, and you get the predicted 12-year, $460 million deal. The Dodgers completely ignored that long-term approach.
Tucker, one of the best left-handed hitters in baseball, fills a major need for the Dodgers. The outfield corners were one of the team’s few weak spots last season after Michael Conforto struggled and Teoscar Hernández had a down year. Adding the market’s best corner outfielder makes their already strong lineup even more powerful.
