When NBA players saw Kobe Bryant, they could not help but fear him. His presence alone consistently demanded respect and instilled fear the moment he stepped onto the court. His unmatched competitiveness, relentless intensity, and elite skill level consistently reinforced why “Black Mamba” was more than a nickname – it was the defining identity of his 20-year career. That’s how his opponents had come to know him. However, he is a different man off the court.
As reported by Fadeaway World, the former Los Angeles Lakers’ athletic trainer, Gary Vitti, revealed that behind that fierce public image, Bryant also quietly fulfilled more than 200 Make-A-Wish requests over the course of his career. Those visits were not widely publicized at the time, but they reflected a consistent commitment to spending time with children facing critical illnesses.
“It was like it was two completely different people. There’s this guy who, on his birth certificate, it said, ‘Kobe Bryant,’ and then there’s this other guy who’s the Black Mamba. It’s really hard to know they come out of the same body because they’re diametrically opposite…Kobe Bryant is like the sweetest, nicest guy you’ve ever met,” Vitti said of Bryant on the All The Smoke podcast.
Kobe Was The Complete Opposite Of The Black Mamba
According to Vitti, Bryant showed genuine care for the children, treating them with warmth and compassion while dedicating hours – and sometimes even days – to making them happy and fulfilling their wishes. While fans and opponents primarily saw his competitive edge during games and practices, these private moments revealed a different side of him.
Even Vitti, who worked with Bryant his entire career, recalled being in disbelief seeing this soft side of the five-time champion. “It was like it was two completely different people. There’s this guy who, on his birth certificate, it said, ‘Kobe Bryant,’ and then there’s this other guy who’s the Black Mamba…Kobe Bryant is like the sweetest, nicest guy you’ve ever met… That would make you cry,” he said.
But still, his interaction with these Make-A-Wish kids was private, which is why fans and pundits only knew his intense side. “Kobe would have spent days and hours with these kids. I mean, he was so good with them. And you could see the love that came out of his heart and their heart,” Vitti said.
To those who knew Bryant on a personal level, like Vitti, this side was nothing new, something Khloe Kardashian could attest to. She recalled the time the Lakers superstar helped her make an important decision when his former teammate, Lamar Odom, reached his lowest point because of his cocaine addiction.
Now, Vitti has shared another story that highlights Bryant’s kindness away from the court. “I used to say to him, ‘You know, the rest of the world doesn’t know this about you,’” Vitti said. “I said, ‘I realized something about you. You’ve got a heart of gold. It’s just surrounded by s–t.’” In other news, Bryant’s name recently made the headlines after his wife had to shut down pregnancy and remarriage rumors.
