Justin Timberlake Takes Legal Action To Prevent Bodycam Footage From Going Public, But The Case Raises Bigger Questions About Transparency

Seems fair.

Justin Timberlake has finally filed a case to stop the dissemination of the body cam video of the police when he was arrested in 2024 while driving intoxicated in the Hamptons area of Long Island, New York. Justin Timberlake is looking to find a way to stop the spread of the body cam video, which includes eight hours of continuous recording. He filed the case in court to prevent this video from being used by law enforcement agencies, but not by media groups that can make it public.

According to NBC News, Justin Timberlake’s attorneys have filed a petition arguing that the 8-hour-long bodycam video of the officer should not be shared in the media or anywhere, as it includes personal moments of Timberlake that have nothing to do with public consciousness.

Timberlake’s attorneys argued in the documents filed in Suffolk County Supreme Court, “The harm from public exposure—stigma, harassment, reputational injury, and the permanent loss of privacy—is immediate and irreparable. Mr. Timberlake sought a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to prevent the Village from doing so.”

The Media Doesn’t Seem To Stop From Getting Their Hands On That Tape

Even though the case has been filed to stop the spread of the video, media groups are still trying to obtain it. Even these media groups have filed public records requests for the bodycam video of Timberlake’s arrest. The request has not yet been granted, but the decision on the dissemination will be made after the court finalizes Timberlake’s petition.

The artist, on the other hand, has accepted his mistake in this matter and advised the public not to do anything of the sort. He has been penalized with 25 to 40 hours of community service and a fine. Justin has also pleaded for reducing the sentence, and has said in the court, “This was not that. I found myself in a position where I could have made a different decision,” he added. “Even if you had one drink, don’t get behind the wheel of a car. There are so many alternatives. Call a friend, take an Uber. … This was a mistake that I made.”

Looks like Justin has accepted his mistake and is seeking a reduced sentence, but even then, he is compelling the court to protect his privacy by preventing the dissemination of his body cam video. Regardless, the decision on his request is yet to be made.
